PNAD COVID19: 8.6% of employed population still away from work due to social distancing in second week of July

This proportion dropped in relation to the previous week (10.1%) and against the first week of the survey, between May 3-9 (19.8%).

PNAD COVID19 estimated the Brazilian employed population at 81.1 million in the week of July 5-11, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (81.8 million persons) and dropping in relation to the week of May 3-9 (83.9 million persons).

The employed population not away from work was estimated at 71.0 million persons, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (71.1 million) and increasing against the week of May 3-9 (63.9 million). Among those persons, 8.2 million (or 11.6%) worked remotely. This contingent dropped against the previous week (8.9 million or 12.5%) and, in absolute figures, remained stable in relation to the week of May 3-9 (8.6 million), though dropping in percentage terms (13.4%).

The employment-population ratio was 47.6%, remaining stable against the previous week (48.1%) and dropping in relation to the week of May 3-9 (49.4%).

The proxy of the informality rate was 34.0%, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (34.2%) and declining against the week of May 3-9 (35.7%).

Nearly 7.0 million (8.6% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent reduced in relation to the previous week (8.3 million or 10.1% of the employed population) and against the week of May 3-9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of those employed).

The unemployed population was estimated at 12.2 million persons, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (11.5 million) and increasing in relation to the week of May 3-9 (9.8 million). As a result, the unemployment rate stayed at 13.1% for the July 5-11 period, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (12.3%) and rising against the first week of May (10.5%).

The workforce participation rate stayed at 54.8% in the week of July 5-11, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (54.9%) and compared with the first week of May (55.2%).

The population out of the workforce – that neither worked nor looked for a job – was of 76.9 million persons, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (76.8 million) and against the week of May 3-9 (76.2 million). In this population, nearly 28.3 million persons (or 36.7% of the population out of the workforce) reported that they would like to work. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (28.7 million or 37.4%) and increased against the week of May 3-9 (27.1 million or 35.5%).

Nearly 19.2 million persons out of the workforce who would like to work and did not look for a job, did not that because of the pandemic or for not finding a job in the locality where they lived. They corresponded to 68.0% of the unemployed persons who did not look for a job and would like to work. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (19.4 million or 67.4%) and against the week of May 3-9 (19.1 million or 70.7%).

3.0 million persons with flu-like syndrome looked for health establishments

In the week of July 5-11, PNAD COVID19 estimated that 13.9 million persons (or 6.6% of the Brazilian population) showed at least one of the 12 symptoms associated to the flu-like syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty to breathe, headache, chest pain, nausea, stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, eye pain, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) that are investigated by the survey. This contingent remained stable against the previous week (14.3 million or 6.8% of the population) and dropped in relation to the week of May 3-9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).

Nearly 3.0 million persons (or 21.5% of those who showed any symptom) looked for health establishments  (health centers, family health teams, UPAs, SUS medical centers or hospitals, or even private ambulatories/offices, medical centers or hospitals). This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (3.1 million or 21.5%) and dropped in absolute figures – though it increased in percentage terms – against the week of May 3-9 (3.7 million or 13.7%). More than 84% of such attendances were in the public health network.

Between July 5 and 11, 315 thousand persons (10.6%) who had symptoms of flu-like syndrome looked for medical care in either private or military ambulatories or offices. This proportion remained stable both in the comparison with the previous week (311 thousand or 10.1%) and in relation to the first week of May (320 thousand or 8.7%).

Nearly 914 thousand persons looked for medical care in public, private or military hospitals in the week of July 5-11. This contingent remained statistically stable in relation to the previous week (933 thousand) and against the week of May 3-9 (1.1 million). Among those who looked for care, 124 thousand (13.6%) were hospitalized. It also remained stable against the previous week (136 thousand or 14.6%) and the week of May 3-9 (97 thousand or 9.1%).
