Enterprise Pulse Survey: negative effects of the pandemic are felt in 62.4% of the enterprises in second half of June

Among the 2.8 million enterprises in operation in the second half of July, 62.4% reported feeling significant negative effects of the pandemic on their activities, whereas for 22.5%, there were few or no effects and for 15.1%, the effects were positive. Enterprises in the Services sector experienced the biggest negative effects (65.5%), with a highlight to Services rendered to families (86.7%). In Trade, 64.1% reported negative effects, and in Construction, 53.6%. As for the industrial sector, 48.7% of the enterprises mentioned effects, whereas for 24.3% the effect were small or inexistent and for 27.0%, positive, in the period analyzed.

Results of the second round of the Enterprise Pulse Survey reflect the perception of enterprises in operation at the end of the second half of June against those in the first half. The survey, linked to the IBGE’s Experimental Statistics, aims at monitoring the evolution of the Covid-19 effects on the activities of non-financial enterprises. Negative effects
were reported by 62.7% of the small-sized enterprises, 46.3% of the medium-sized enterprises the big-sized ones. By Major Region, effects remained negative for 72% of the enterprises in the Northeast, 65% in the Southeast and 63% in the Central West Region. The North and South had the biggest percentages of enterprises reporting there were no effects (27.4% and 30.9%, respectively) or positive ones (24.5% and 15.2%) at the end of the period analyzed.

Decrease in sales or reduction of traded services due to the pandemic was reported by (50.7%) of the enterprises in operation in the second half of June. Another 27.6% said the effects were small or inexistent and 21.4% that there was increase of sales during the pandemic. Sales drop was felt by 51.0% of the small-sized enterprises, 39.1% of the intermediate enterprises and 32.8% of the big-sized ones. In bigger enterprises, the percentage of t effect stood out: 41.2%.

By sector, a sales decrease was perceived in 54.7% of the enterprises in Services; in 51.3% of those in Construction and in 48% and 44.7% of those in the segments of Trade and Industry, respectively. By segment, sales drops in Services rendered to families, Trade of vehicles, pieces and motorcycles (both with 66.2%) and Other services (69.8%).

In the second half of June, 46.3% of the enterprises in operation recorded no significant changes in their production or customer service capacity, 43.1% had difficulty and 10%, the opposite. Also,  50.9% did not observe any significant changes in the access to suppliers and 40.9% had difficulty.

More than half (52,9%) of the companies in operation found it difficult to make regular payments in the second half of June, whereas 40.6% considered there were no significant changes.

As for employed persons, about eight out of every ten enterprises in operation (78.6% or 2.2 million) kept the same number of employees as in the first half of the month, 14.8% and 6.3% increased the number of employees.

Among the 411 thousand enterprises that reduced the number of employees, in 61.8% of them there a reduction of up to 25%. Regardless of the size, type of economic activity or geographic location, the biggest percentages of decrease were at a level of up to 25%.

In order to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, there were actions aiming at prevention and at the continuation of extra hygiene measures, adopted by about 86.1% of the enterprises in operation.  In addition to that, 42.5% remained in home office (remote work) and 28% brought workers' vacations forward. 

A total 33.5% of the enterprises changed their method of delivery of products and services, whereas 13.5% launched or started to trade new products and/or services in the second half of June.

It is estimated that 43.9% of the enterprises postponed the payment of taxes and that  12.4% obtained an emergency credit line for payroll.

By adopting such measures, about 39.2% of the enterprises felt supported by governmental authorities. Among those postponing the payment of taxes, the percentage was 70.4% and among those who obtained lines of credit for payroll, 76.4%.
