PNAD COVID19: 10.1% of the employed population were away from work between June 28 and July 4 due to social distancing

Compared to the previous week, the proportion fell 12.5%; when compared to the first week of the survey (May 3 to 9), it dropped 19.8%.

PNAD COVID19 estimated at 81.8 million the unemployed population of the country in the week from June 28 to July 4, with stability n relation to the previous week (82.5 million persons) and decrease in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (83.9 million persons).

The employed population on duty was estimated at 71.0 million persons, increasing both in relation to the previous week (69.2 million) and compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (63.9 million). Among those persons, 8.9 million (or 12.5%) worked from home a statistically stable figure over the previous week (8.6 million or 12.4%) and in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (8.6 million or 13.4%).

The employment-to-population ratio was of 48.1%, stable over the previous week (48.5%) and declining over the week of May 3 to 9 (49.4%).

The proxy measurement of informal economy was of 34.2%, stable compared to the previous week (34.5%), but retreating over the week of May 3 to 9 (35.7%).

Nearly 8.3 million (10.1% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent was reduced in relation to the previous week (10.3 million or 12.5% of the employed population) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (16.6 million and 19.8% of the employed).

The unemployed population was estimated at 11.5 million persons, declining over the previous week (12.4 million, but growing in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (9.8 million). As a result, the unemployment rate stood at 12.3% in the period form June 28 to July 4, stable in relation to the previous week (13.1%) and with a high in relation to the first week of May (10.5%).

The labor force participation rate stood at 54.9% between June 28 and July 4, which indicates decrease compared to the week before (55.8%) and stability compared with the first week of May (55.2%).

At the same time, the population out of the workforce (neither working for looking for a job) was of 76.8 million persons, with increase over the previous week (75.1 million) and stability over the week of May 3 to 9 (76.2 million). In this population, nearly 28.7 million persons (or 37.4% of the population out of the workforce) said they would like to work. This contingent grew in relation to the previous week (26.9 million or 35.9%) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (27.1 million or 35.5%).

Nearly 19.4 million persons out of the force would like to work, but did not go job searching either because of the pandemic or because they did not find a job in their neighborhood.  They corresponded to 67.4% of the non-employed persons that did no search for a job but would like to work. This contingent grew in relation to the previous week (17.8 million or 66.2%), but remained stable over the week of May 3 to 9 (19.1 million or 70.7%).

3.1 million persons with flu-like symptoms sought health care

From June 28 to July 4, 14.3 million persons (or 6.8% of the country's population) had at least one of the 12 symptoms associated to the flu syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulties, headache, chest pain, nausea, runny or stuffy nose, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) which are investigated by the survey. This contingent was reduced in relation to the previous week (15.4 million or 7.3% of the employed population) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).

Nearly 3.1 million persons (or 21.2% of those with any of the symptoms) sought care in public health facilities (health centers, family-health programs, UPA-Emergency Care Units, SUS Emergency Rooms or Hospitals or else, private hospitals, ERs or doctor´s offices or outpatient clinics).  This contingent stood stable over the previous week (3.1 million or 20.0%), but it had decrease in absolute figures over the week of May 3 to 9 (3.7 million or 13.7%). More than 83% of those health services were provided by the public health system.

From June 28 to July 4, 311 thousand persons (10.1%) that had flu-like symptoms sought for care in private or military doctor's office or outpatient clinics. This proportion represents stability both in relation to the previous week (322 thousand or 10.4%) and in relation to the first week of May (320 thousand or 8.7%).

Nearly 933 thousand persons sought care in public, private or military hospitals in the week of June 28 to July 4.   This contingent stood statistically stable over the previous week (982 thousand) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (1.1 million). Among those who sought for care, 136 thousand (14.6%) were hospitalized. In such case, there was also stability over the previous week (119 thousand or 12.2%) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (97 thousand or 9.1%).
