Agricultural storage capacity reached 177.7 million tonnes in the 2nd half of 2019

The total available storage capacity in Brazil in active establishments was 177.7 million tonnes in the second half of 2019, an increase of 1.3% in relation to the previous semester. Mato Grosso still has the largest storage capacity in the country (44.5 million tonnes). The stock of agricultural products totaled 26.5 million tonnes, an increase of 2.3 million tonnes compared to the amount stocked on December 31, 2018. Corn stocks represented the largest volume (11.9 million tonnes) , followed by stocks of soybeans (5.5 million), wheat (4.1 million), rice (1.7 million) and coffee (1.0 million).

Silos represent 48.7% of the total storage capacity in the country

Regarding the storage types, the Survey of Stocks showed that silos predominate in the second quarter of 2019, reaching 86.6 million tonnes (48.7% of the total storage capacity). This result indicates an increase of 2.2% of this type of storage capacity in relation to the first quarter 2019. 

Next, automated and bulk warehouses achieved 66.7 million tonnes of storage capacity, the same capacity verified in the previous quarter. The modality is responsible for 37.5% of the national storage. Regarding conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses, the result was of 24.5 million tonnes, which represented an increase of 1.7% in relation to the first quarter of 2019. These warehouses contribute with 13.8% of the total storage.

The survey also recorded a decrease of 0.5% in the number of active establishments when in comparison with the result of the first quarter of 2019. As a whole, there were 7, 940 active establishments in the second quarter of 2019, with only the North Region increasing (0.9 %). Northeast, Southeast and South recorded decrease of 1.9%, 1.8% and 0.2%, respectively, while the Central-West remained stable.

Mato Grosso has the biggest storage capacity in Brazil, with 44.5 million tonnes. From this total, 58.0% are  automated and bulk warehouses and 33.8% are silos. Next are Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul with 32.3 and 32.2 million tonnes, respectively. In both states, silos prevail.

Corn and soybean warehouses boost, but rice and coffee decrease

Corn warehouses represented the highest volume (11.9 million tonnes) in the second quarter of 2019, followed by soybeans (5.5 million), wheat (4.1 million), rice (1.7 million) and coffee (1.0 million). These products constitute 91.6% of the total stock of the products monitored by this survey, and the others 8.4% consist of  cotton, black beans, colored beans and other grains and seeds. The stock of corn (6.8%) and soybeans (0.7%) increased in comparison with the second quarter of 2018. On the other hand, rice, coffee and wheat record falls of 21.2%, 19.0% and 2.2%, respectively.
