In June, IBGE forecasts rise of 4.2% in grain harvest for 2019

In June, the production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds for 2019 was estimated at 236.0 million tonnes, 4.2% above the 2018 harvest (more 9.5 million tonnes) and 0.6% above that reported in May (more 1.3 million tonnes). The estimate of the area to be harvested was of 62.8 million hectares, 3.0% above that in 2018 (more 1.8 million hectares) and 0.3% above that in the previous month (more 171.8 thousand hectares).

Rice, corn and soybeans represented 92.5% of the estimated output and accounted for 87.3% of the area to be harvested.  In relation to 2018, the area for corn increased 6.8%, the area for soybeans, 2.2% and the area for rice fell 10.1%. On the production side, soybeans dropped 4.5%, rice, 11.2% and corn increased 17.1%. The production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds was distributed like this: Central-West (106.8 million tonnes), South (78.4 million tonnes), Southeast
 (22.1 million tonnes), Northeast (19.2 million tonnes) and North (9.5 million tonnes). Compared with 2018, there were increases of 6.4% for the North Region, 5.7% in the Central-West, 5.2% in the South and of 0.5% in the Northeast, and a decrease of 3.4% in the Southeast.

Highlights in the June estimate for 2019

The following percentage changes stood out in June: potatoes
- 3rd crop (8.2%), coffea canephora (2.9%), beans - 3rd crop (2.2%), sorghum (1.8%), cassava (1.8%), corn - 2nd crop (1.7%), corn - 1st crop (0.2%), soybeans (0.1%), potatoes - 1st crop
(-0.3%), beans - 1st crop (-0.3%), potatoes - 2nd crop (-0.7%), coffea arabica (-1.3%), oranges (-1.5%), beans - 2nd crop (-2.2%), tomatoes (-2.9%) and sugarcane (-3.1%).

In absolute figures, the highlights were the changes in: corn - 2nd crop (1,143,173 t), cassava (355,220 t), potatoes - 3rd crop (75,100 t), soybeans (72,144 t), sorghum (44,336 t), corn - 1st crop (42,779 t), coffea canephora (26,197 t), beans - 3rd crop (9,941 t), beans - 1st crop (-4,350 t), potatoes - 1st crop (-4,481 t), potatoes - 2nd crop (-8,781 t), beans - 2nd crop (-27,671 t), coffea arabica (-29,053 t), tomatoes (-115,676 t), oranges (-254,348 t) and sugarcane (-21,191,306 t).

POTATOES - The production estimate increased 1.6% over the previous month and should reach 3.9 million tonnes. The first crop was estimated at 1.7 million tonnes, a retreat of 0.3% over May. Having registered a drop of 2.0% in its estimated production, São Paulo was the major responsible for this result.

For the second crop, the estimated output reached 1.2 million tonnes, a decline of 0.7% over May. In Paraná, the estimate in the production retracted 3.5% and should reach 323.1 thousand tonnes. In Bahia, the estimated output was reduced by 0.2%, whereas it rose 0.9% in São Paulo.

Concerning the third crop, the production estimate was of 996.3 thousand tonnes, a growth of 8.2% in relation to the previous month. The fair prices of this product should stimulated an increase in the planting areas of Minas Gerais (2.7%), São Paulo (3.1%) and Goiás (22.7%), and the output should increase 2.7%, 4.9% and 28.0%, respectively.

COFFEE BEANS – The production estimate was of 3.2 million tonnes or 52.6 million sacks (60-kg sack), a reduction of 12.2% in relation to 2018. The production fell 0.1% over May. For coffea arabica, the production estimate was of 2.2 million tonnes or 37.2 million 60-kg sacks, a drop of 1.3% in relation to the previous month (29.1 thousand tonnes or 484.2 thousand 60-kg sacks). In Minas Gerais, the estimate of the output dropped 1.4% and should reach 1,590.6 thousand tonnes, against 1,613.6 thousand tonnes last month, a decline of 23.0 thousand tonnes or 384.0 thousand 60-kg sacks. The area to be harvested decreased 1.4%. In São Paulo, the estimate in the output fell 3.0% and the production should reach 288.2 thousand tonnes or 4.8 million 60-kg sacks. In Paraná, the estimated production retreated 0.5%. For Espírito Santo, the output was estimated at 172.2 thousand tonnes or 2.9 million 60-kg sacks, an increase of 1.7% over the previous month. The output of coffea arabica fell 17.1% over the previous year, representing a "low year" due to the negative biennial period.

Concerning coffea canephora, mostly known as conillon, the estimated output of 920.0 thousand tonnes or 15.3 million 60-kg sacks increased 2.9% over May. The estimated production of Espírito Santo was of 632.3 thousand tonnes or 10.5 million 60-kg sacks, a growth of 4.0%. This state accounted for 68.7% of the national production of this type of coffee.                                                                      In Minas Gerais, the estimated production was of 18.6 thousand tonnes or 309.4 thousand 60-kg sacks, a growth of 9.5% over the previous month.  

SUGARCANE - The production estimate was of 665.0 million tonnes, a reduction of 3.1% over May, due to the smaller area destined to harvesting (-2.7%). São Paulo remained the biggest national producer, accounting for 51.1% of the production. The major changes in June happened in Minas Gerais and São Paulo, which reduced their production estimates by 4.7% and 4.9%, respectively. Minas Gerais was the third biggest producer of sugarcane, accounting for 11.1% of the total and representing 73.6 million tonnes, a record for the state. The production estimate fell 1.4% over 2018, with a reduction of 2.9% in the producing area and an increase of 1.6% in the average yield.

BEAN SEED - The output was estimated at 3.0 million tonnes, falling 0.7% in relation to May. The total production of beans should grow 1.7% in relation to the 2018 harvest.

The first crop of beans was estimated at 1.3 million tonnes, a drop of 0.3% against the May estimate, which represented 4,350 tonnes. Having reduced its production estimate by 8.7% or 12,266 tonnes, Ceará was the negative highlight. Rio Grande do Norte (-2.1%), Pernambuco (-1.4%) and Goiás (-0.2%) also had their production estimates reduced. The estimated output rose 7.0% in São Paulo. For the first crop, the annual comparison pointed out to a reduction of 11.7% in the output. A number of states reduced their estimates, among them: São Paulo (-31.6%), Paraná (-19.8%), Goiás (-29.7%), Santa Catarina (-17.6%), Minas Gerais (-7.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-9.7%).

The second cropof beans was estimated at 1.2 million tonnes, a retreat of 2.2% against May. The estimates in Goiás, São Paulo and Pernambuco increased 6.3%, 49.0% and 5.2%, respectively, whereas it dropped 0.1% in Minas Gerais. The estimated production for the second crop grew 22.1% in relation to 2018. The Northeast Region influenced this result, since the expected production in Paraíba (41.1%), Alagoas (152.0%), Ceará (36.3%) and Bahia (478.5%) increased. The Center-South states also increased the production of "dry" beans, highlighted by Paraná (31.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (32.7%), Santa Catarina (22.2%), São Paulo (49.0%) and Minas Gerais (16.0%).

Concerning the third crop of beans, the estimated production was of 463.1 thousand tonnes, an increase of 2.2% over May, which represented 9,941 tonnes.  São Paulo was the state that mostly influenced this result, since its production estimate rose 53.6%, which represented 15,700 tonnes. Goiás e Paraná reported declines in their production estimates, of 4.8% and 2.4%, respectively. The states responsible for these increases were Mato Grosso (29.8% or 20,384 tonnes), Federal District (233.0% or 12,600 tonnes), Minas Gerais (3.4% or 5,552 tonnes) and Paraná (51.4% or 1,050 tonnes).

ORANGES - The production was estimated at 16.5 million tonnes, dropping 1.5% over May. Accounting for 75.5% of the national output, São Paulo, the major state in the citrus sector, estimated a production of 12.4 million tonnes or 304.8 million 40.8-kg boxes, a decline of 2.1%. In Minas Gerais, the estimated output rose 3.8% in relation to the previous month. Its production, of 979.0 thousand tonnes, corresponds to 5.9% of the national output. Other important states, Bahia and Paraná, registered estimates of 785.5 and 795.0 thousand tonnes, respectively, maintaining the figures from the previous month. The production of oranges fell 1.2% over the previous year, being influenced by the production in São Paulo, which retracted at this same level.

CASSAVA (roots) - The estimated output was of 20.2 million tonnes, rising 1.8% over May. The most significant increases were recorded in Pará (5.3% or 205.1 thousand tonnes) and in São Paulo (20.8% or 249.5 thousand tonnes), having Paraná posted a drop of 3.1% or 109.3 thousand tonnes. The production estimate rose 4.2% in relation to the previous year, mainly due to the advance of 6.5% in the average yield.

CORN (grain) - The production estimate added up to 95.3 million tonnes, rising 1.3% over May, which represented more 1.2 million tonnes. The output estimate increased 17.1% in relation to the previous year. In the first crop of corn, the production estimate reached 26.0 million tonnes, an increase of 0.2% over May. In Goiás and Paraná, the production estimate rose 3.9% and 0.2%, respectively. The output estimate was 0.8% bigger in relation to the previous year, due to the increase of 13.3% in the average yield, which should reach 5,489 kg/ha. The production estimate was 69.3 million tonnes, an increase of 1.7% in relation to the May estimate and of 24.7% in relation to 2018. This volume in the production of corn - 2nd crop was a record in the IBGE´s time series, having surpassed that of the 2017 harvest, then the biggest production obtained in Brazil, when it registered 67.6 million tonnes. The most significant increases in volume of production in relation to the previous month were recorded in Pará (31.6% or 76.9 thousand tonnes), Maranhão (6.6% or 50.8 thousand tonnes), São Paulo (6.2% or 135.8 thousand tonnes), Paraná (3.9% or 499.2 thousand tonnes) and Goiás (4.4% or 376.2 thousand tonnes).

SOYBEANS (grain) - The production was estimated at 112.5 million tonnes, an increase of 0.1% over May. The output retreated 4.5% in relation to 2018, with the most significant reductions recorded in Bahia (-20.9% or 1.3 million tonnes), Minas Gerais (-7.3% or 395.0 thousand tonnes), São Paulo (-11.5% or 393.1 thousand tonnes), Paraná (-15.8% or 3.0 million tonnes), Mato Grosso do Sul (-14.5% or 1.4 million tonnes) and Goiás (-4.0% or 455.1 thousand tonnes). Relevant increases in the output were reported in Mato Grosso (1.5% or 460.2 thousand tonnes) and in Rio Grande do Sul (5.5% or 958.7 thousand tonnes).

SORGHUM (grain) - The estimated production reached 2.5 million tonnes, an increase of 1.8% over May. In terms of volume, the biggest increase in the production was reported by Goiás, the major producer of this cereal and responsible for 42.5% of the national production. The estimated output was of 1.1 million tonnes, an increase of 3.7% over the previous month. Having increased 61.4%, Pará was another state that adjusted its estimates and should reach 16.1 thousand tonnes. The production increased 11.2% over the previous year, though the area planted with this cereal reduced 4.1%.

TOMATOES -  The estimate of the Brazilian production was of 3.9 million tonnes, a reduction of 2.9% over May. Estimated at 56.1 thousand hectares, the planted area fell 3.5%, despite the growth of 0.6% in the average yield. The estimated production of Minas Gerais and São Paulo dropped 2.4% and 12.8%, respectively, due to the smaller planted area. The output of tomatoes retreated 5.3% over 2018 and the planted area decreased 6.1%.
