The Quarterly Surveys of Livestock show that, in the first quarter of 2019, 6.2 billion liters of milk were purchased in the country, up 3.0% over the same period in 2018. It was the best result for the first quarter since the beginning of the time series in 1997. The production of chicken eggs was also a record for a Q1, with 912.6 million dozens and a 6.0% increase over the same period of 2018. The slaughter of hogs also recorded the best first quarter of the time series, up 5.5% year-on-year, culminating in a higher production than that of the previous quarter - which had not been seen since the first quarter of 2001. Cattle slaughter grew 1.6% compared to the first quarter of 2018, reaching 7.9 million head. On the other hand, the slaughter of chicken fell by 2.0% in the same comparison, with 1.45 million head. The acquisition of leather decreased 2.2% in relation to the first quarter of 2018, reaching 8.5 million pieces. The Quarterly Survey of Livestock support material is on the right.

Cattle slaughter grows 1.6% in relation to Q1 2018

In the first quarter of 2019, 7.89 million cattle head were slaughtered under some type of sanitary inspection service. This amount was 1.6% higher than in the first quarter of 2018 and 3.6% lower than in the preceding quarter.

The slaughter of 121,06 thousand cattle head in the first quarter of 2019 in relation to the same period of the previous year, reflected the increases in 14 of the 27 Feeration Units (FUs). Among those with a participation above 1.0%, there were positive changes in: Mato Grosso (+144,40 thousand head), Tocantins (+35,59 thousand head), Rondônia (+27,87 thousand head), Mato Grosso do South (+25.59 thousand head), Paraná (+11.60 thousand head) and Santa Catarina (+3.90 thousand head).

The most intense falls occurred in Pará (-36.93 thousand head), Minas Gerais (-25.53 thousand head), Goias (-23.29 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (-14.51 thousand head), Sao Paulo
(-11.23 thousand head), Acre (-9.56 thousand head), Maranhão (-9.46 thousand head) and Bahia (-9.27 thousand head).

Among the FUs, Mato Grosso continues to lead cattle slaughtering, with 17.1% of national participation, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (11.3%) and São Paulo (9.8%).

Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 5.5% and makes the best quarter since 2001

In the first quarter of 2019, 11.31 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, representing increases of 5.5% over the same period of 2018 and 1.1% compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. It was not until 2001 that production in the first quarter exceeded that of the previous quarter (4th quarter). Q1 2019 was the best first quarter of slaughter of hogs and pigs in the time series, which began in 1997. All the months of the first quarter of 2019 also recorded the best results of the time series for each month, respectively.

The slaughtering of 589.01 thousand more hogs and pigs in the first quarter of 2019, compared to the same period of 2018, reflected the increases in 20 of the 25 FUs. The most significant increases occurred in Santa Catarina (+195.14 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+104,40 thousand head), São Paulo (+83.14 thousand head), Paraná (+74.00 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+66.05 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+64.11 head), Goiás (+9.34 thousand head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+5.25 thousand head). In this quarter there were no decreases in UFs that recorded participation above 1%.

In the ranking of FUs, Santa Catarina continues to lead the slaughtering of hogs and pigs, with 26.6% of national participation, followed by Paraná (20.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18.8%).

Chicken slaugher drops 2.0% over the same period of 2018

In the first quarter of 2019, 1.45 billion chicken head were slaughtered. There was a decrease of 2.0% in relation to the same period of 2018 and an increase of 2.3% in relation to the previous quarter.

The slaughter of 29.87 million less chicken head than the same period of 2018 was determined by reductions in 11 of the 24 UFs that participated in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, there were declines in São Paulo (-20.46 million head), Santa Catarina (-11.50 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-5.56 million head ), Mato Grosso (-2.45 million head), Federal District (-996.16 thousand head) and Bahia (-865.10 thousand head).

Meanwhile, the increases were in Goiás (+ 6.70 million head), Paraná (+2.98 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (+2.37 million head), Minas Gerais (+1.46 million head), heads) and Pará (+565,65 thousand heads).

Paraná continues to lead the slaughter of chickens, with 32.3% of the national production, followed by Rio Grande Sul (14.8%) and Santa Catarina (13.9%).

Milk acquisition grows 3.0% and makes the best quarter since 1997

In the first quarter of 2019, the purchase of raw milk made by establishments operating under some type of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.20 billion liters. There was an increase of 3.0% compared to the first quarter of 2018, and a decrease of 7.5% compared to the previous quarter. This was the largest uptake for the first quarter since 1997.

In relation to the same period in 2018, the increase of 181.85 million liters of milk collected at the national level comes from the increases in 19 of the 26 FUs participating in the Quarterly Survey of Milk. The most significant increases were in Goiás (+76.61 million liters), Paraná (+43.71 million liters), Minas Gerais (+42.80 million liters) and Ceará (+ 13.75 million liters). The most significant reductions occurred in Rio de Janeiro (-17.67 million liters), São Paulo (-15.58 million liters) and Rio Grande do Sul (-10.24 million liters).

Minas Gerais kept on leading the national milk acquisition ranking, with 25.3% of the national acquisition, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (13.1%) and Paraná (12.8%).

Leather acquisition shrinks 2.2% against Q1 2018

In the first quarter of 2019, tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather - those who tan at least 5,000 whole units of bovine raw hide per year - reported receiving 8.49 million pieces of leather. There were reductions in both comparisons: 5.8% in relation to the previous quarter and 2.2% in comparison with the first quarter of 2018.

The comparison between the first quarters of 2018 and 2019 indicates a negative change of 186.96 thousand pieces in the total acquired by the establishments. The positive highlights in absolute numbers were with Tocantins (+101.60 thousand pieces), Minas Gerais (+80.15 thousand pieces), Paraná (+38.61 thousand pieces) and Rondônia (+27.08 thousand pieces).

The largest reductions were in São Paulo (-117.19 thousand pieces), Goiás (-81.78 thousand pieces), Rio Grande do Sul (-81.22 thousand pieces), Pará (-51.54 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (-26.37 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-3.73 thousand pieces).

Mato Grosso continues to lead the Federation Units that receive pieces of raw hide for processing, with 16.1% of the national participation, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (13.7%) and São Paulo (11.3%).

Hen egg production up 6.0% and makes the best Q1 since 1997

The production of  hen eggs reached 912.64 million dozen  were produced in the first quarter of 2019. This corresponded to a 6.0% increase over the first quarter of 2018 and a decrease of 3.1% in relation to the previous quarter. Despite the quarter-on-quarter decline, this was the largest production in the first quarter since 1997.

The production of 51.57 million dozen more eggs at the national level compared to the first quarters of 2019/2018 was driven by increases in 21 of the 26 UFs with farms in the survey universe.

The highest increases were in Ceará (+9.64 million dozens), Espírito Santo (+8.78 million dozens) and Paraná (+7.90 million dozens).

São Paulo continued to be the largest egg producer among the Federation Units in the first quarter of 2019, now with 27.9% of national production, followed by Espírito Santo (9.9%), Minas Gerais (9.4%) and Paraná (9.1%).
