Having expanded 13.4% in volume of sales over April 2018, the segment of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which includes department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores and toy stores posted the steepest positive rate in 2019.

Beyond the dynamism coming from e-commerce, this segment was particularly pressed by the shifting of the Eastern holiday, which caused a positive impact in the sales of this sector, inasmuch as Eastern in 2019 happened in April and, in 2018, the sales increased, to a great extent, in March. Therefore, this sector exerted the biggest positive contribution to the overall result of the retail, accruing 6.4% in the first four-month period in 2019. As a result, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months registered a rate of 7.1% and signaled a gain in the pace in relation to the cumulative index up to March (6.1%).

Having advanced 1.6% over April 2018, the sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco accounted for the second biggest positive impact on the overall retail trade rate. The performance of this activity has been sustained by the increase in the real usual wage bill, though the positive impacts should be also mentioned, particularly in the sales of this sector, inasmuch as Eastern happened in April in 2019, whereas the increase of sales in 2018 happened mostly in March. Nevertheless, the four-month indicator against the same period last year remained on the negative side (-0.3%). Having recorded an increase of 2.0%, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months remained stable compared with the cumulative rate up to March (1.9%).

Having increased 3.8% in sales against April 2018, the activity of Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries exerted the third biggest contribution to the overall retail trade rate and posted the 24th consecutive positive change in the comparison with the same month a year ago. Besides the nature of continuous use of this segment, another factor that could contribute to sustain the good performance was its price changing below the overall average. As a result, this segment accrued and advance of 6.1% in the first four-month period of the year. In terms of the cumulative index over the last 12 months, this segment lost pace when changing from 6.3% to 5.8% and followed a downward path since February 2019 (6.4%).

The segment of Furniture and household appliances maintained volume of sales stable (-0.1%) in relation to April 2018. The price increase could be a relevant factor to explain the behavior of this segment. This sector registered a retreat of 1.4% in the first four-month period of 2019, whereas, by changing from -2.1% up to March to -2.5% in April, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months maintained the downward path noticed since February 2018 (10.4%).

Having retreated 3.6% in volume of sales over April 2018, Fuels and lubricants exerted the biggest negative contribution to the overall result of the retail. The price rise of fuels, above the average change of prices, was the relevant factor that has been influencing negatively the performance of this sector. The cumulative rate in the first four-month period of the year dropped 0.9%, whereas the annualized index in the last 12 months remained on the negative side (-3.9%) since March 2015 (-0.3%).

Having declined 3.2% in relation to April 2018, the sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear recorded the second consecutive negative rate, thus accruing a change of -0.2% between January and April 2019 compared with the same period last year. Having changed from a decrease of 0.9% in March to -0.6% in April, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months maintained the downward path started in February 2018 (7.1%).

The segment of Office, computer and communication material and equipment retreated 10.5% over April 2018. As a result, the cumulative index in 2019 remained close to the stability (0.2%). The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (-0.4%) registered a sharp loss of pace in the sales over March (0.8%).

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery declined 25.6% in volume of sales against April 2018. The behavior of this activity has been influenced by the reduction of physical stores. Therefore, the first four-month period in 2019 declined 28.7% compared with the same period a year ago. Having changed from -21.7% to -23.2%, the annualized indicator over the last 12 months recorded the steepest drop of the time series for this indicator, maintaining this sector on the negative side since March 2014 (-0.2%).

Having increased 6.9% over April 2018, the sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces exerted the biggest contribution to the overall result of the extended retail in April 2019. The cumulative index in the year stayed at 7.9%. Having risen 10.6% up to April, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months registered a loss of pace in relation to the cumulative rate up to March (12.7%), thus maintaining the downward path started in December 2018 (15.1%)

Having increased 4.1% over April 2018, volume of sales of the segment of Construction material accrued a gain of 3.7% for the first four-month period of 2019. Having changed from 3.5% in March to 2.7% in April, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months recorded a loss of pace in sales.
