In March, industry falls in nine of the 15 places surveyed

Falling 1.3% in March, the domestic industry had negative rates in 15 of the places surveyed (seasonally adjusted series). The sharpest decreases were in Pará (-11,3%) and Bahia (-10,1%). The Northeast Region (-7.5%), Mato Grosso (-6.6%), Pernambuco (-6.0%), Minas Gerais (-2.2%) and Ceará (-1.7%) also had steeper drops than the national average (-1.3%), whereas São Paulo (-1.3%) and Amazonas (-0.5%) close the set of places with negative indices. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%) and Goiás (2.3%) had the biggest highs. The other positive rates were in Paraná (1.5%), Santa Catarina (1.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%). Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry as a whole fell 0.5% in the quarter ended March 2019 compared to the level of the previous month and kept the predominantly downward trend begun in August 2018. In regional terms, nine of the 15 places had negative rates, with a highlight to he sharper drops in Pará (-3.7%), Espírito Santo (-3.4%), Mato Grosso (-2.9%), Bahia (-2.2%) and Minas Gerais (-2.1%). On the other hand, Amazonas (2.5%), Paraná (1.5%), Pernambuco (1.2%), Santa Catarina (1.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.8%) had the biggest advances.
In the comparison with March 2018, the industrial sector fell by 6.1% in March 2019, with 12 out of 15 surveyed sites reporting negative results. It is worth mentioning that March 2019 (19 days) had two working days less than the same month of the previous year (21). In that month, the most intense setbacks were in Pará (-12.5%), Mato Grosso (-12.3%), Espírito Santo (-11.1%) and Amazonas (-10.8%), driven by the sectors of mining and quarrying industries (natural or processed iron ores) in the first place; (fresh, cooled and frozen beef), in the second; pulp, paper and paper products (pulp), extractive industries (crude oil) and food products (chocolate candies and bars, fresh, cooled and frozen beef and cheese); and computer equipment, electronic and optical products (televisions), in the last one. Minas Gerais (-8.2%), São Paulo (-7.3%), Northeast Region (-7.0%) and Bahia (-6.6%) also registered negative rates sharply above the national average (6.1%), whereas Ceará (-5.4%), Pernambuco (-4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.4%) and Goiás (-1.1%) completed the set of places with decline in production.
On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%), Santa Catarina (3.0%) and Paraná (2.4%) had advances, boosted by beverage activities (grape wine, beer, draft beer and soft drinks) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (bus bodies and trailers and semi-trailers), in the first place; of electrical machines, appliances and materials (refrigerators or freezers for domestic use and transformers) and machines and equipment (metal silos for cereals), in the second; and of food products (cane sugar, frozen chicken giblets, frozen beef and animal feed), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel oil, motor gasoline and ethyl alcohol) and machinery and equipment (harvesting machines) , in the last.

In the cumulative rate from January to March 2019, over the same period a year ago, ten of the 15 places surveyed had falls, especially Espírito Santo (-8.5%). Amazonas (-5.1%), Mato Grosso (-5.0%), Northeast Region (-4.4%), Bahia (-3.5%), São Paulo (-2.6%), Minas Gerais (-2.5%) and Pernambuco (-2.4%) also registered sharper negative rates than the industry average (-2.2%), while Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%) and Pará ( -0.7%) completed the set of locations with a decline in production at the close of the first three months of 2019. On the other hand, Paraná (7.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (5.5%) had the largest advances. Santa Catarina (2.8%), Goiás (2.3%) and Ceará (0.3%) also showed positive rates.
Also in the cumulative index in the first quarter of 2019, the industrial sector, with a 2.2% decrease, intensified the fall recorded in the fourth quarter of 2018 (-1.2%) and remained with the evident loss of pace started in the last quarter of 2017 (5.0%) -- all comparisons against the same period of the previous year. In regional terms, ten of the 15 places surveyed showed a loss of dynamism, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (from 3.6% to -8.5%), Pará (from 9.0% to -0.7%), Bahia ( from 3.5% to 3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 8.8% to 5.5%), Minas Gerais (from 0.4% to -2.5%), the Northeast Region (from -1.6% to -4.4%) and Mato Grosso (from -2.5% to -5.0%). On the other hand, Goiás (from -8.0% to 2.3%) and Paraná (from 0.7 to 7.8%) had the biggest progress between the two periods.
The cumulative index in the last 12 months, recording a negative change of 0.1% in March 2019, posted the first negative result since 2017 and kept the downward trend started in July 2018 (3.3%). In regional terms, nine of the 15 places surveyed had decreases, but eleven showed a slower dynamism when compared to February indices. Among the places, Amazonas (from 0.7% to -2.1%), Pará (from 9.1% to 7.2%), Mato Grosso (from -0.2% to -1.4%), São Paulo (from 0.0% to -0.9%), Espírito Santo (from -1.6% to -2.3%) and Ceará (from 0.4% to -0.1%) had the sharpest loss of pace between February and March 2019, while Rio Grande do Sul (from 6.1% to 6.7%) and Paraná (from 3.5% to 4.0%) recorded the main gains between the two periods.
