In January, trade sales change by 0.4%

In January 2019, retail trade in the country changed by 0.4% against December, in the seasonally adjusted series, after a decrease of 2.1% in December. The quarterly moving average for retail trade, after stability in the quarter ended December (0.0%), was 0.5% in the quarter ended January.

In the seasonally adjusted series, in comparison with January 2018, retail trade increased 1.9%, the sixth positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in the last 12 months changed from 2.3% in December to 2.2% in January. 

In extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, the volume of sales increased 1.0% against December 2018, making up for the decrease of 1.7% in the previous month. The moving average relative to the quarted ended January (0.2%) accelerated versus the quarter ended December (-0.3%).

Against January 2018, extended retail trade increased 3.5%, its twenty-first positive rate in a row in this type of comparison. The cumulative index in 12 months decelerated, having changed from 5.0% in December to 4.7% in January. The complete publication is available on the rights. 

Seven of the eight activities surveyed recorded increase

In the series with seasonal adjustment of volume of sales, seven of the eight activities surveyed had positive rates: Office, computer and communication material and equipment (8.2%), Other personal and household articles (7.2%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.6%), Fuels and lubricants (0.5%), Furniture and household appliances (0.4%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.2%) and Textiles, apparel and footwear (0.1%). The only decrease was recorded by Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (-0.5%).

In extended retail trade, the volume of sales in January 2019 increased 1.0% against December 2018, in the seasonally adjusted series. The activity Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased 5.7%, after a decrease of 3.5% in the previous year, whereas the sector of Construction Material almost repeated the same level as in December 2018 (0,1%).

In January 2019, against the same month a year ago, retail trade increased 1.9%, with positive rates in five of the eight activities surveyed. Among the increasing activities, the highlights, in terms of rate composition, were: Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.2%), followed by Other personal and domestic articles (6.4%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (7.2%). Also with an increase of sales against January 2018 are: Fuels and lubricants (1.4%) and  Office, computer and communication material and equipment (1.6%).

On the other hand, the activities that recorded decrease were: Furniture and household appliances (-2.8%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-27,3%) and Fabric, apparel and footwear (-1.2%).

Extended retail trade, with an increase of (3.5%) against January 2018, recorded its twenty-first positive rate in a row, and the sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (8.8%) was the main influence on extended retail trade, whereas Construction material recorded an increase of 2.2%.  

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with an increase of 2.2% versus January 2018, accounted for the second positive rate in this comparison and accounted for the main impact on the overall retail trade rate in 2019. The performance of the activity has been supported by the stability of real usual earnings. The cumulative result in the last 12 months (3.7%) was relatively stable, if compared to that of 2018 (3.8%).

Other personal and domestic articles, which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores and toy stores, increased 6.4% in relation to January 2018 and was the second main contribution to the overall retail trade rate. The cumulative index in 12 months (7.4%) decelerated from December 2018 (7.6%).

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics increased 7.2%  in sales against January 2018, and accounted for the third biggest contribution to retail and recorded the twenty-first positive rate in a row. The lower change in the prices of pharmaceuticals influenced positively the performance of the sector. The cumulative index in 12 months changed from 5.9% in December to 6.0% in January and recorded relative stability.

Fuels and lubricants, after being close to stability (0.1%) in December 2018, recorded an increase of 1.4% in volume of sales against January 2018. The recent fall of fuel prices, below the average change, has influenced the performance of the sector, especially in the last two months. The cumulative index in 12 months remained negative (-4.5%), but with less significant decreases since November 2018 (-5.5%).

Office, computer and communication material and equipment recorded an increase of 1.6% against January 2018. The cumulative index in the last 12 months was stable in December (0.1%) but decreased (-0.2%) in January.

Fuels and lubricants recorded a decrease of 2.8% in volume of sales and against January 2018 and accounted for the main negative impact on the trade rate of January 2019. The cumulative index in 12 months changed from -1.3% in December to -1.9% in January, keeping the pace since April 2018 (9.6%).

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery recorded a decrease of 27.3% against January 2018 in volume of sales. This activity has been affected by the closing of physical shops. As a consequence, the cumulative index in the last 12months changed from -14.7% in December to -17.5% in January, which contributed to the downward trend observed since February 2018 (-3.6%).

Fabric, apparel and footwear recorded a decrease of 1.2% in relation to January 2018, the second negative rate in a row in this type of comparison. The cumulative index in 12 months (-1.6%) was practically stable in relation to December (-1.5%) and has been on a downward trend since January 2018 (7.7%).

Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased 8.8% in relation to January 2018, recorded the twenty-first positive rate and accounted for the biggest contribution to the January result  for extended retail. Nevertheless, the cumulative index in 12 months (14.3%) recorded a slight decrease of pace against the cumulative index until December (15.1%).

Construction material, with an increase of 2.2% in relation to January 2018, increased again, after a negative result in December (-0.6%) in this comparison. As a consequence, the cumulative index in 12 months changed from 3.5% in December to 3.1% in January, having faced decline in pace. This activity has been on a downward trend since April 2018 (10.3%).

Trade sales increase in 17 of the 27 Federation Units

From December 2018 to January 2019, in the seasonally adjusted series, there were increases in 17 of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Amapá (7.9%), Mato Grosso (5.6%) and Santa Catarina (3.8%). On the other hand, 10 of the 27 Federation Units are on a downward trend, the main highlights being: Tocantins (-5.7%), Pernambuco (-2.7%) and Paraná (-2.5%).

In extended retail trade, there were positive results in 13 of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Santa Catarina (4.3%), Amapá (4,1%) and São Paulo (3.1%). On the other hand, with negative contributions, the highlights were 14 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly: Tocantins (-2.9%), Paraíba (-2.4%) and Paraná (-2.2%).

Versus January 2018, the change of national retail trade sales incresed 1.9%, with positive results in 13 of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Espírito Santo (9.6%), Santa Catarina (8.4%) and Mato Grosso (7.6%). On the other hand, 14 of the 27 Federation Units are on a downward trend, the main highlights being Piauí (-6.9%), Tocantins (-5.0%) and Paraíba (-4.1%).

In extended retail trade, against January 2018, the increase of 3.5% was observed in 17 of the 27 Federation Units, with the main highlights, in terms of volume of sales: Espírito Santo (14.0%), Mato Grosso (8.2%) and Santa Catarina (7.1%).  On the other hand, accounting for negative contributions, there were 10 of the 17 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Paraíba (-5.6%), Amapá (-3.9%) and Bahia (-3.4%).
