Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 12.0% and underutilization rate is 24.3% in quarter ended January 2019

The unemployment rate (12.0%) in the moving quarter ended January 2019 increased 0.3 percentage points in relation to the quarter August - October 2018 (11.7%).  In relation to the moving quarter November 2017 - January 2018 (12.2%), there was stability.

The unemployed population (12.7 million) increased 2.6% (318 persons more) against the quarter August-October 2018.  In comparison with the same quarter in 2017, there was stability.

The employed population (92.5 million) fell by -0.4% (a decrease by 354 thousand persons against the quarter August-October 2018 and increased 0.9% (by 846 thousand persons) against the quarter November 2007 - January 2018.

The underutilization rate of workforce (24.3%) in the quarter ended January 2019 was stable against that in the previous quarter (24.1%).  In comparison with the same moving quarter a year ago (23.9%), there was an increase of 0.4 percentage points.

The underutilized population (27.5 million) was stable against that of the quarter August-October 2018 (27.3 million).   Against the same quarter in 2017, there was increase (2.5% or 671 million employed persons more).

The number of discouraged persons (4.7 million) was stable in relation to the quarter August-October 2018 and increased 6.7% against the same moving quarter in the previous year (4.4 million).  The percentage of discouraged persons (4.3%) was stable against the previous quarter and changed by 0.2 percentage points versus the same quarter a year ago (4.1%).

The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector  (except domestic workers) was 32.9 million persons, having remained stable in both comparisons.  The number of workers without a formal contract (11.3 million) fell (-2.8%) against the previous quarter (a decrease by 321 thousand persons).   Against the same quarter in 2017, there was increase (2.9% or 320 thousand persons). Self-employed workers (23.9 million) increased 1.2% in comaprison with the previous quarter (291 thousand persons more ) and by 3.1% againt the same quarter a year ago (719 thousand persons).

The average usual real earnings (R$ 2,270) increased 1.4% against eh previous quarter and was stable in comparison with the same quarter a year ago.  The usual real wage bill (R$ 205 billion) was stable in both comparisons.

The unemployment rate, of 12.0% in the moving quarter ended January, 2019 changed by 0.3 percentage points against the quarter August-October 2018 (11.7%). The rate remains stable over that in the same moving quarter a year ago (12.2%).

In the quarter November 2018-January 2019, there were 12.7 million unemployed persons in Brazil. That figure increased 2.6% (more 318 thousand persons) against August-October 2018. Versus the same quarter a year ago, the estimate remained stable.

The compound labor underutilization rate (percentage of unemployed persons, of persons facing time-related unemployment and of those in the potential workforce) was 24.3% in the quarter ended January 2019, stable against the previous quarter (24.1%) and recording an increase of 0.44% percentage points against the equivalent moving quarter in 2017-2018 (23.9%).

In the quarter November 2018 – January 2019, there were approximately 27.5 million underemployed persons in Brazil. The figure was stable, that is, it recorded no significant change against that of the quarter August-October 2018, when underutilization had hit 27.3 million persons. Against the same quarter a year ago, when there were 26.8 million underutilized persons, the estimate had recorded a change of 2.5%, or a total  671 thousand persons more.

The number of persons facing time-related unemployment (6.8 million) was stable in comparison with the previous quarter. Against the same quarter a year ago, when Brazil had 6.4 million underemployed persons, the indicator increased by 7.3%.

The number of persons out of the workforce (65.5 million) increased by 0.6% (403 thousand persons) in comparison with the quarter August - October 2018. Versus the same quarter a year ago, the indicator increased 1.2% (762 thousand persons).

The number of discouraged persons (4.7 million) was stable in relation to the quarter August-october 2018 and increased 6.7% versus the same moving quarter a year ago (4.4 million).

The percentage of discouraged persons in the population in the workforce or discouraged (4.3%) was stable in relation to the previous quarter and changed by 0.2 percentage points against the same quarter a year ago (4.1%).

The number of persons in the workforce (employed and unemployed persons), in the quarter November 2018 - January 2019, was 105.2 million persons, and remained stable against the previous quarter. Versus the same quarter a year ago, there was expansion of 0.8% (825 thousand persons more).

The number of unemployed persons (92.5 million) recorded a decrease (-0.4%) against the previous quarter (354 thousand persons). In comparison with the same moving quarter a year ago, there was an increase of 0.9% (846 thousand persons).

The employment population ratio (percentage of employed persons atb workig age) was 54.2% in the quarter ended January, with a decrease of -0.3 percentage points against the previous quarter (54,5%). There was stability versus 2017. 

The number of eworkers with a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers) was 32.9 million persons, being stable in both comparisons. 

The number of workers without a formal contract in the private sector (11.3 million) fell by (-2.8% against the previous quarter (a decrease by 321 thousand persons). Versus the same quarter in 2017, it increased by 2.9%, a total 320 thousand persons.

Self-employed persons (23.9 million) increased 1.2% against the previous quarter (291 thousand persons) and 3.1% against the same quarter a year ago  (719 thousand persons).

The category of employers (4.5 million persons) remained stable in both comparisons.

The group of domestic workers (6.2 million) remained stable in both comparisons.

The group of workers in the public sector (including the military and civil servants), estimated at 11.5 million persons, recorded a decrease (-1.8%) against the previous quarter and remained stable in comparison with the same moving quarter a year ago. 

Average real earnings from all the activities of employed persons (R$ 2,270) increased 1.4% against the previous quarter and remained stable against the same quarter a year ago. 

The real wage bill (R$ 205 billion) remained stable in both comparisons.
