The last update of the legal toponyms (place names) of the municipalities had been in 2017. Bringing the most recent changes, the tables with the 2018 version can be accessed here.
The IBGE releases today the list of changes of the Legal Toponyms of the Brazilian Municipalities. It is about the place names of the municipalities, periodically updated in the IBGE´s territorial structure database. The last update took place in 2017.
In addition to the 106 changes already released last year, the 2018 version brings nine updates in the names of eight municipalities. The change list, in Excel format, shows the previous name of the municipality, the current name, the reason of the change and the date in which the denomination was changed in the IBGE registry.
The changes in the last version were registered in Manissobal (PE), Caripós (PE), Santa Maria da Boa Vista (PE), São José do Belmonte (PE), São Bento do Una (PE), São Lourenço (PE) – with two registries, São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP) and Serrita (PE).
The toponyms reflect and perpetuate some of the local history and culture, by referring to a fact or a person of relevance during the occupation process, or by portraying the sense of belonging and identity with the territory.
The new denominations now integrate all the geographic and statistical documents produced by the IBGE, such as the Municipal Maps of Population Estimates, Continuous Cartographic Base of the Federation Unit, Continuous Cartographic Base of Brazil to the Millionth - BCIM, Brazilian National Spatial Data Infrastructure - INDE, IBGE Cities, Brazil in Figures, and Statistical Yearbook, as well as SIDRA.
