Services sector remains stable (0.0%) in November

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector registered a null change (0.0%) in November against the previous month, maintaining the stability picture of September (-0.3%) and October (0.0%). In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services rose 0.9% over November 2017, the fourth positive rate in a row for the first time since 2014. The cumulative index in the year changed -0.1%. Having changed from -0.2% in October to 0.0% in November, the cumulative rate over the last 12 months interrupted a series of 41 negative rates, maintaining the upward path since April 2017 (-5.1%).

Despite the null change (0.0%), positive rates prevailed in sectoral terms, with advances in four out of the five activities. The sector of information and communication services (0.8%) stood out, as it grew for three consecutive months and accrued a gain of 1.4%. The other advances were in transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.3%), services rendered to families (0.4%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.1%). The only negative influence came from the activity of other services (-0.2%), which returned a small part of the advance of 5.7% recorded in October. Still in the seasonally-adjusted series, the index of the quarterly moving average changed -0.1% in November against October (0.3%). Among the sector, only professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.9%) and transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.5%) dropped. Conversely, information and communication services (0.5%), other services (0.4%) and services rendered to families (0.3%) advanced this month.

Having advanced in four out of the five activities and in 48.8% of the 166 types of services surveyed, volume of services grew 0.9% in relation to November 2017. Among the activities, the major positive contribution came from information and communication services (1.2%). The other positive figures came from services rendered to families (3.1%), other services (3.7%) and transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.6%). The only drop was in professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%).
Having retreated in three out of the five activities and in 57.2% of the 166 types of services surveyed, the cumulative index in the year changed -0.1% over the same period in 2017. Among the sectors, the negative impacts came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.6%) and information and communication (-0.7%). Services rendered to families (-0.1%) also registered a slight decline. On the other hand, the positive contributions came from transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.3%) and other services (1.8%).
RESULTS BY REGION
In regional terms, 20 out of the 27 states retracted between October and November in the seasonally-adjusted series, despite the stability in the overall services (0.0%). Among the places that fell, the highlight was Rio de Janeiro (-2.4%), which accrued a loss of 4.8% in the last three months. Conversely, the major positive contribution came from São Paulo (0.7%), which accrued a gain of 2.2% since August.
In relation to November 2017, the expansion of volume of services in Brazil (0.9%) was followed by only 6 out of the 27 Federation Units. The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (4.9%), which advanced in all the five activities, highlighting information and communication services (8.6%), professional, administrative and complementary services (3.5%) and other services (10.0%). On the other hand, the most important negative influence came from Rio de Janeiro (-8.4%), whose three out of the five sectors retreated, highlighting the losses in information and communication services (-19.0%).
In the cumulative rate in the year over the same period in the previous year, the decrease in volume of services in Brazil (-0.1%) was widespread along the places surveyed, since 22 out of the 27 states also lost real revenue of services. The major negative impact came from Rio de Janeiro (-2.8%). The states of Ceará (-7.2%), Bahia
(-3.3%), Paraná (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%) also declined. Conversely, the major positive contribution came from São Paulo (2.0%).
SPECIAL AGGREGATE OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES
The index of tourism activities fell 1.1% between October and November, representing the third consecutive negative rate and accruing a loss of 2.1% in this period. Five out of the 12 states surveyed dropped, highlighted by São Paulo (-2.7%), and the Federal District (-3.6%). The most relevant positive contributions came from Rio de Janeiro (0.7%) and Ceará (2.5%).
The tourism activities grew 3.5% over November 2017. In regional terms, tourism services increased in eight out of the 12 states, highlighted by São Paulo (7.8%), which registered its ninth positive rate in a row. Ceará (17.0%) and Bahia (5.7%) also recorded a relevant growth. The most important negative impacts came from Paraná (-8.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%).
In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities advanced 2.0%. In regional terms, eight out of the 12 places surveyed also rose, highlighted by São Paulo (5.1%), Pernambuco (5.0%), Ceará (5.9%) and Santa Catarina (4.4%). Rio de Janeiro
(-3.9%) and Paraná (-5.5%) dropped in the cumulative rate in the year for the tourism activities.
