Retail sales change -0.4% in October

The national retail trade changed -0.4% in October 2018, compared to September, in the seasonally-adjusted series. The quarterly moving average stood stable at 0.1%.

In the non-adjusted series, against October 2017, the retail trade grew 1.9%. The cumulative index of the year rose 2.2% and in the last 12 months is stood virtually stable, going from 2.8% in September to 2.7% in October.

The extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, Motorcycles, Parts and Pieces and Construction Materials, changed -0.2% over September. The quarterly moving average was 0.8%.

In relation to October 2017, the extended retail trade grew 6.2%, the eighteenth consecutive high. Year-to-date growth was 5.3% and in the last 12 months it was practically stable: from 5.8% in September to 5.7% in October.

Five of the eight activities surveyed down in sales

The -0.4% change in the sales o he retail trade from September to October 2018, in the seasonally adjusted series, was followed by negative results in five of the eight activities surveyed: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-7.4%), Furniture and household appliances (-2.5%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-2.0%), Fuels and lubricants (-1.2%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material
(-0.8%). The activities that recorded highs were Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.3%), Other articles of personal and household use (0.7%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (0.9%).

In the extended retail trade, October sales changed -0.2% over September 2018, in the seasonally adjusted series. Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces stood stable (0.1%), whereas Construction material rose 1.3%, both, respectively, after drops of 0.1% and 1.5% in the previous month.

The retail trade advances 1.9% over October 2017, in the non-adjusted series, with positive rates in five of the eight activities. The highlights were Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.2%), followed by Other articles of personal and household use (7.8%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic goods and toiletries (6.8%).

Other activities on the rise were fabric, apparel and footwear (4.1%) and office, computer and communication equipment and material (3.2%). Conversely the drops were concentrated in Fuels and lubricants (-5.7%), a sector which exerted the major negative impact on the formation of the global rate followed by Furniture and household appliances (-1.8%) and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-23.1%).

The extended retail trade rose 6.2% over October 2017, registering the eighteenth positive rate in a row. The result of October 2018 was mainly affected by the 20.1% high of vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces and of 6.6% in Construction material.

Results by activities:

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco advanced 2.2% in comparison with October 2017, the nineteenth positive rate in a row, with gain of pace over September (0.5%). The activity exerted the main positive impact on the global retail rate. The cumulative index on the last 12 month stood at 4.4%, representing stability over the cumulative index until September (4.4%).

Other articles of personal and household use - which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting good stores and toy stores rose 7.8% against October 2017. The results showed pace increase in relation to September (4.0%) and exerted the second biggest contribution to the general result of the retail. As a consequence, the cumulative index in the last 12 months advances 6.4% and increased its pace in relation to September (6.0%) in this comparison.

Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic goods and toiletries with increase of 6.8% against October 2017, exerted the third biggest impact on the global rate of the retail, the eighteenth positive change in a row. In the last 12 months, the sector stood stable, moving from 5.8% in September to 5.9% in October.

Fabric, apparel and footwear with a 4.1% change over October 2017, had the third positive rate in a row, with pace gains in relation to August (2.9%) and September (1.2%). Even so, the cumulative index in 12 months stood stable, going from 0.0% in September to -0.1% in October.

Office, computer and communication material and equipment advanced 3.2% over October 2017, the third positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in 12 months (-2.6%) accelerated the pace of decline in the sales compared to September (-2.4%).

Fuels and lubricants fell 5.7% over October 2017, and exerted the biggest negative contribution to the total retail result. In the last 12 months, the indicator remained negative (-5.6%) and increased the pace of decline in relation to the cumulative index up to September (-5.1%).

Furniture and household appliances, com queda de 1,8% frente a outubro de 2017, teve a quarta taxa negativa seguida, porém menos intensa que nos meses anteriores. Ainda assim, o setor exerceu o segundo maior impacto negativo sobre o RETAIL TRADE de outubro de 2018.  O indicador acumulado nos últimos 12 meses manteve a perda de ritmo observada desde abril (9,6%), ao passar de 2,3% até setembro para 1,4% até outubro.

Livros, jornais, revistas e papelaria recuo 23,1% em relação a outubro de 2017. Essa atividade tem taxas negativas desde agosto de 2017 (-4,4%), sendo o resultado de outubro de 2018 a queda mais intensa dessa sequência. O acumulado nos últimos 12 meses permanece no campo negativo desde março de 2014 (-0,2%), ao passar de -8,9% em setembro para -10,3% em outubro.

Veículos, motos, partes e peças cresceram 20,1% frente a outubro de 2017, a décima oitava taxa seguida positiva, e a maior contribuição positiva ao resultado geral do varejo ampliado. O acumulado nos últimos 12 meses segue com a recuperação iniciada em julho de 2016 (-17,8%), com alta de 14,7% até outubro.

Construction material avançou 6,6% em relação a outubro de 2017, e voltou a crescer após queda em setembro (-1,6%). O acumulado nos últimos 12 meses passou de 6,3% em setembro para 5,4% em outubro e seguiu sua trajetória de queda, iniciada em abril de 2018.

Trade sales fall in 17 of the 27 Federation Units

In comparison with September, 17 of the 27 Federation Units had drops in sales, the highlights were Rondônia (-4.0%), the Federal District (-3.4%) and Piauí (-2.7%). Among the 10 with highs, the most relevant was in Roraima (2.8%).

In the  extended retail trade the change between September and October was of -0.2%, with sale decreases in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Rondônia (-8.0%). Six states increased their sales, particularly Mato Grosso (2.8%), whereas Paraná remained stable (0.0%).

Over October 2017, 24 of the 27 Federation Units increased their sales, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (9.4%), Acre (9.2%) and Espírito Santo (9.0%). The three decreasing ones were the Federal District (-6.7%), Piauí (-4.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.2%). As to the composition of the retail rate, the most relevant ones came from Santa Catarina (9.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.2%) and Paraná (3.9%).

Just the Federal District (-3.9%) and Amapá (-3.8%), in the comparison with October 2017, did not increase the sales of the extended retail trade. The positive highlights were Espírito Santo (13.8%), Mato Grosso (13.5%) and Santa Catarina (12.8%). In the composition of the rate of the extended retail, São Paulo (6.8%), Santa Catarina (12.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (7.6%) stood out.
