In September, services sector changes -0.3% against August

In September, the services sector had a negative change of 0.3% compared to August (seasonally-adjusted series), and put an end to four months of fluctuations: May (-3.5%), June (4.9%), July (-2.0%) and August (1.4%). In relation to September 2017 (series without seasonal adjustment), services grew 0.5%, the second consecutive rate since November (1.0%) and December (0.5%) in 2014. The cumulative index in the year was in -0.4%. The cumulative index in 12 months rose from -0.6% in August to -0.3% in September, the lowest negative rate since June 2015 (-0.2%). In the third quarter (series without seasonal adjustment), the services sector grew by 0.7% compared to the same period in 2017 and interrupted a sequence of 14 consecutive quarters of decline.

The -0.3% change from August to September occurred in three of the five activities investigated, with a highlight to transportation, support services to transportation and mailing activities, which, with a 1.3% drop, eliminated part of the 2.8% gain of August. The other negative results came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.4%), which eliminated part of the increase of 3.1% in August, and other services (-3.2%), which offset the previous month gain (1.0%). Information and communication services (0.4%) and services rendered to families (1.4%) contributed positively to the volume of services this month.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the volume of services changed -0.3% in the quarter ended in September 2018 compared to the previous month, having reached the highest rate in the times series (1.4 %) in the quarter ended in August. Among the sectors, the segment of other services (-1.8%) had the most intense retraction after an increase of 0.5% in August. The other negative results came from transportation, (-0.8%), which returned part of the advance of the previous month (4.3%), and information and communication services (-0.8%), which kept the downward trend started in June. On the other hand, services rendered to families (1.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) had positive rates, and kept the upward trend initiated in June and July 2018.

Compared to September 2017, the services sector increased 0.5%, with progress in three of the five activities and in 41.0% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, information and communication services (2.2%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.6%) had the main positive contributions. Another positive impact came from services renderd to families (0.4%). On the other hand, negative influences were with professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.3%) and other services (-4.0%).

The cumulative index of the year changed -0.4%, with negative rates in three of the five activities and in 56.6% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.9%) and information and communication services (-1.2%) had the main negative impacts. Another sector that also declined was services rendered to families (-0.8%). On the other hand, the positive contributions came from the segments of transportation, support  services to transportation and mailing (1.3%) and other services (1.6%).

In the third quarter (seasonally adjusted), the services sector grew by 0.7% compared to the same period last year, interrupting a sequence of 14 consecutive quarters of decline. This increase was observed in four of the five sectors investigated, with highlights for services rendered to families, from -1.6% in the April-June period to 1.6% in July-September of this year, and for the transportation and mailing services, which increased the pace of growth (from 0.3% to 2.8%). The other ups came from information and communication services (from -0.3% to 0.4%) and from professional, administrative and complementary services (from -1.6% to -1.5%). The only loss was observed in the sector of other services (from 3.5% to -0.6%).

Among the 27 Federation Units, 22 record drops in services

Between August and September (seasonally adjusted), 22 of the 27 Federation Units had falls, following the -0.3% change in the country. Among the negative results, the highlight is Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%), which fully offset the advance of the previous month (2.3%). The main positive change came from São Paulo (0.3%), which advanced for the second consecutive month and accumulated a gain of 1.4% in this period.

In relation to September 2017, the expansion of the volume of services in the country (0.5%) was joined by 12 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive influence was São Paulo (3.4%), with ups in four of the five activities investigated, especially information and communication services (8.7%), followed by transportation, support services to transportation and mailing ( 1.7%) and other services (3.4%). The most relevant negative influence came from Rio de Janeiro (-5.1%), with a decline in four of the five sectors surveyed, with a highlight to to the losses of information and communication services (-7.3%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-5.6%).

In the cumulative index in the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, there were falls in 21 of the 27 Federation Units. The main negative impacts came from Rio de Janeiro (-1.8%), Ceará (-8.3%) and Paraná (-2.4%). On the other hand, São Paulo (1.4%) recorded the most relevant positive contribution.

Tourism activities change -0.4% over August

The index of tourism activities changed -0.4% between August and September, and offset part of the 2.8% advance of the previous month. Six of the 12 Federation Units followed this fall, with highlight to Ceará (-6.2%), Paraná (-1.9%) and the Federal District (-1.9%). The most relevant positive contributions came from São Paulo (0.6%) and Goiás (3.2%).

In relation to September 2017, the volume of tourism activities in the country increased by 5.5%, driven mainly by the increase in the revenue of airlines and hotels. On the other hand, the segment of restaurants had the most important negative influence on tourism services.

Ten of the 12 Federation Units where tourism activities are investigated showed progress, with a highlight to São Paulo (9.6%), which had its seventh positive rate in a row. Other significant positive contributions came from Ceará (13.5%), Goiás (14.5%) and Pernambuco (7.3%). On the other hand, the only negative impacts came from Paraná (-10.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.1%).

In the cumulative index of the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities grew by 1.4% compared to the same period in 2017, mainly driven by hotels, car rentals, passenger air transportation and travel agencies. On the other hand, the main negative impact remains with the restaurant segment. Nine of the 12 places surveyed also registered positive rates, especially São Paulo (4.2%), followed by Pernambuco (5.2%), Minas Gerais (2.0%) and Santa Catarina (4.5%). Rio de Janeiro (-4.6%) and Paraná (-5.1%) registered the main negative influences.
