The IBGE releases today the 2018 version of the Map of Geographical Indications in Brazil, result from a partnership with the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI. The map brings information on the Stamps of Geographical Indications, locating the regions of origin of products and services certified as Indication of Origin and/or Appellation of Origin. The 2018 version gained five new products, raising to 58 the Geographical Indications certified in Brazil up to June 2018.  Produced in the 1:5,000,000 scale (where 1 cm = 50 km), the map is available here.

The 2018 version of the Map of Geographical Indications in Brazil gained five new products, which received Stamps of Indication of Origin: cassava flour from Cruzeiro do Sul (AC), guaraná from Maués (AM), cheese from Colônia Witmarsum (PR), cacao nuts from the south of Bahia and socol from Venda Nova do Imigrante (ES). As a result, the number of Geographical Indications certified in Brazil increased from 53 to 58.

Wines and sparkling wines from the Vinhedos Valley (RS), shrimp from Costa Negra (CE) laces from Divina Pastora (SE) and Cariri (PB) are some examples of Brazilian products with acknowledged Geographical Indications, as well as cachaças from Paraty (RJ), Salinas (MG) and Abaíra (BA), tin handicraft from São João Del-Rei (MG), opals and handcrafted jewels from Pedro II (PI), honey from Pantanal (MT/MS) and Ortigueira (PR), red propolis from the mangrove forests of Alagoas and clay pots from Goiabeiras (ES), among others.

The Geographical Indication is used to establish the origin of products and services whenever that place becomes well-known or whenever a certain characteristic or quality of the product or service is due to its origin. It provides consumers with reliable information on the quality and authenticity of what they are acquiring. Such type of certification also treasures the local culture and fosters tourist activities.

Distributed along all the Brazilian geographic regions, the Geographical Indications were established by local associations, unions and producers cooperatives and are certified by the INPI. The INPI´s Stamp of Geographical Indication is regulated by the Law of Intellectual Property no. 9,279 and may assume either of two models: Indication of Origin - IP (article 177) and Appellation of Origin - DO (article 178).
