Between August 20 and September 6, the IBGE will carry out the first pilot of the thematic questionnaire of the 2020 Population Census, which brings specific questions for Indian persons, quilombola persons and other traditional peoples and communities. The questionnaire will be applied in 12 states: Acre, Amapá, Rondônia, Maranhão, Ceará, Sergipe, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina.
With this activity, the IBGE pursues the commitment to provide even better information on traditional peoples and communities, according to Decree no. 8,750 of 2016. Besides the refining in the identification of Indian peoples, the 2020 Census aims at including the quilombola communities, through a specific question on sense of belonging, which will be tested in this pilot.
This first pilot will assess a number of aspects of the questionnaire of the 2020 Census, particularly the block of questions on ethnic-racial identification. This block of questions is spatially controlled, and its application is restricted to Indian and quilombola areas. This theme is guided by the Workgroup on Traditional Peoples and Communities, comprising IBGE servants located in Rio de Janeiro, Roraima and Maranhão.
The pilot is being prepared for some months, involving several visits to Indian villages and quilombola communities. The applications for activities in those special areas loaded in the Mobile Data Collection Devices - DMCs developed by the IBGE´s Directorate of Information Technology were tested during those visits.
Aspects of the surroundings of the Indian villages and the geographic characteristics of the visited areas will also be surveyed. These information will be included in the territorial base of the 2020 Census, which serves as a guideline to the enumerators.
