In October, retail sales grow 0.5%

In October 2025, the volume of retail sales grew 0.5% compared to September, in the seasonally adjusted series, and the quarterly moving average was 0.1%.

Compared to October 2024, retail sales volume grew by 1.1%. The year-to-date figure reached 1.5%, and the figure for the last 12 months was 1.7%.

In the extended retail sector, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, and construction materials, the volume of sales grew 1.1% in October. The moving average was 0.7%. Compared to the same period in 2024, there was a negative change (-0.3%).

The cumulative rate of the year was negative (-0.3%) and that of 12 months remained stable (0.0%).

In the transition from September to October 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail trade showed positive rates in seven of the eight activities surveyed: Office, computer and communication equipment and material (3.2%), Fuels and lubricants (1.4%), Furniture and household appliances (1.0%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%), Other personal and household goods (0.4%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (0.3%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.1%). The only negative result was in Textiles, apparel and footwear (-0.3%). In the same comparison, the expanded retail trade showed two positive results: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (3.0%) and Construction materials (0.6%).

Sales of furniture and household appliances grew 3.5% compared to October 2024, the fourth consecutive increase. In terms of influence on the overall rate, the sector shares second place with hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, and other personal and household articles, adding 0.2 percentage points to the total of 1.1% for retail. The cumulative growth up to October 2025 was 4.1%, similar to September (4.2%). Over the last twelve months, the cumulative growth up to October was 4.2%, the twenty-eighth consecutive increase.

The group of other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelers, sporting goods, toys, among others, showed a 2.0% increase in sales compared to October 2024, totaling seven consecutive months of positive results. In 2025, the sector continues to recover after suffering from the accounting crisis of large companies in the sector, which affected revenue and reduced the number of physical stores in the country in 2023. The cumulative growth up to October was 2.2%, and the growth over the last 12 months was 3.1%.

Sales of books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery grew 0.9% compared to October 2024, against -1.9% in September 2025. In this comparison, over the last 33 months, there were only five increases: May, with 3.2%; July, with 3.8%; August, with 0.8%; and October. The cumulative growth for the year decreased in October (-1.4%), as it had already done up to September (-1.6%). The cumulative index for the last twelve months also show losses: -3.1% up to September and -2.4% up to October 2025.

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco registered its first month with positive volume of sales (0.3%), in the year-on-year indicator, after two months of decline. The sector made the second largest contribution to the retail index: 0.2 percentage points of the total 1.1%. The cumulative figure for the year was 0.8% up to October, the same percentage recorded in September. Over the last twelve months, the cumulative index was 1.0%, continuing to decline since April (3.5%).

Sales of fuels and lubricants showed stability (0.0%) compared to October 2024, after a 0.6% drop in September. The cumulative figure for the year up to October was 0.5%, the same as the last twelve months (0.5%).

The only sector showing a decline compared to October 2024 was Textiles, apparel and footwear (-3.3%), the second consecutive decline, with a consequent negative contribution to the overall retail rate: -0.2 pp to the total of +1.1%. Year-to-date, the cumulative figures are positive and decreasing: 5.5% up to June; 4.4% up to July; 3.9% up to August; 3.3% up to September; and 2.6% up to October. The same scenario is presented for the cumulative figures of the last twelve months: 4.5% up to August; 4.1% up to September; and 3.2% up to October.

The activity of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, one of the sectors that make up the expanded retail sector, showed a 4.3% drop in sales compared to October 2024, the fifth consecutive decline and the seventh in eight months (the only month to grow in this period was May, with +1.5%). The sector's contribution to the overall expanded retail figure was the most significant, in the negative field, with -0.9 percentage points of the total -0.3%. Regarding the year-to-date figures, the indicator has registered losses since June 2025, with an increase in the magnitude of these losses in the last three months: -2.9% in August, -2.8% in September, and -3.0% in October. In the cumulative figures for the last twelve months, the series, which had been positive, but with decreasing gains since October 2024, saw their first month to register losses in October 2025 after twenty-eight months of gains: -1.7% up to October 2025.

The Construction Materials group showed a 3.9% drop in the volume of sales compared to October 2024, the fifth consecutive month to register negative rates in the year-on-year indicator. This drop leads to the second largest negative contribution of the extended retail sector, totaling -0.3 percentage points. As a result, cumulative gains for the year decreased and approached zero: 1.8% through July; 0.7% through August; 0.6% through September; and 0.1% through October. Over the last twelve months, the result also shows decreasing gains since May, reaching 0.6% through October.

The wholesale sector specializing in food products, beverages, and tobacco, compared to the same month of the previous year, saw a 1.9% increase in sales volume in October, the second consecutive year for this indicator. Since the beginning of 2024, the activity had not registered two consecutive months of growth: the last period of sectoral growth occurred from August 2023 to February 2024. The year-to-date scenario shows losses (-3.9%) up to October, following a series of negative results since March 2024. The same is true for the cumulative figures for the last twelve months: -4.9% up to October; however, this result is the least intense negative since October 2024 (-4.7%).

Retail trade showed positive rates in 19 of the 27 Federation Units

Compared to the previous month, retail trade showed positive results in 19 of the 27 federation Units, with notable results in: Espírito Santo (2.7%), Rondônia (2.6%), and the Federal District (2.5%).

On the other hand, negatively impacting the figures, 7 of the 27 Federation Units stand out, with Mato Grosso (-1.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.2%) and Maranhão (-1.0%) showing the most significant decreases. Santa Catarina registered stability (0.0%).

In the same comparison, in the extended retail trade, the change between September and October 2025 was 1.1%, with positive results in 18 of the 27 Federation Units, with Amapá (2.8%), Pernambuco (2.3%) and the Federal District (2.2%) showing the most significant decreases. On the other hand, negatively impacting the figures, 9 of the 27 Federation Units stand out, with Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%), Alagoas (-1.4%) and Tocantins (-0.7%) showing the most significant decreases.

Compared to October 2024, the change in retail sales this month was 1.1%, with positive results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, notably: Amapá (10.1%), Rio Grande do Norte (8.3%) and Santa Catarina (4.8%). On the negative side, there were 6 rates, notably Roraima (-8.9%), Piauí (-4.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.8%). São Paulo remained stable (0.0%) in the year-on-year comparison, as shown in Graph 6. In the extended retail trade, the year-on-year indicator showed a change of -0.3%, with positive results in 16 of the 27 Federation Units, notably: Tocantins (13.2%), Amapá (7.9%) and Mato Grosso (7.6%). On the other hand, 11 FUs had negative results, most notably Piauí (-4.4%), São Paulo (-3.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%).
