In July, volume of services changes by 0.3%

In July 2025, the volume of services in Brazil changed by 0.3% from the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the sector is 18.5% above its pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and this is, once again, the peak of the time series.
In the unadjusted series, against July 2024, the volume of services increased 2.8%, its 16th consecutive positive rate. The year-to-date figure was 2.6%, and the 12-month cumulative figure for July 2025 (2.9%) slowed the growth rate from June 2025 (3.0%).

The change of 0.3% in volume of services in July 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, was observed in three of the five dissemination activities surveyed, mainly information and communication (1.0%), which returned to growth after registering a slight negative change in June (-0.1%). Other increases came from professional, administrative, and complementary services (0.4%) and services rendered to families (0.3%), with the former sector recording increase after stability in the previous month and the latter partially making up for the cumulative loss between April and June (-1.9%).
On the other hand, transportation (-0.6%) accounted for the biggest drop, followed by other services (-0.2%), with the first sector eliminating part of the June increase (1.6%) and the latter registering its second consecutive reversal, with a cumulative loss of 1.7%.

The quarterly moving average was 0.3% in the quarter ended July 2025, from the previous month. Among sectors, still regarding the marginal movement of this index, the positive performance of the services sector, in this type of indicator, was followed by three of the five activities: information and communication (0.6%); professional, administrative, and complementary services (0.4%); and transportation (0.3%). Nevertheless, services rendered to households (-0.5%) and other services (-0.1%) recorded declines in July.
Against July 2024, volume of services increased by 2.8%, the sixteenth consecutive positive rate. This month's result was followed by three of the five activities and also saw increase in 50.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (4.1%) and information and communication (4.6%) had the main positive impacts, driven primarily by increased revenue from road freight; among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation services and mailing (4.1%) and information and communication (4.6%) had the main positive impacts, driven mainly by the increase in revenue from road freight; airway passenger transportation; highway concessionaires; and cargo transportation logistics, in the former sector; and portals, content providers, and other internet information services; technical support, maintenance, and other information technology services; information technology consulting; data processing, application service providers, and internet hosting services; software development and licensing; and custom software development, in the latter.
The other increase came from professional, administrative, and complementary services (2.5%), largely explained by the higher revenue from advertising agencing; business management consulting; general business intermediation through apps or e-commerce platforms; non-financial asset management; temporary labor leasing; and cleaning activities.
On the other hand, other services (-2.0%) and services rendered to households (-1.8%) accounted for the main the negative influences in the month, mainly affected by lower revenue from support activities to financial services; collection of non-hazardous waste from domestic, urban, or industrial sources; securities brokerages; and credit card administration, in the former sector; and restaurants, in the latter.
The cumulative figure in January-July 2025, against the same period of the previous year, increased by 2.4%, with four of the five activities recording positive rates and increase in 52.4% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, the most significant positive contribution came from the information and communication (6.0%), driven mostly by revenues from companies operating in the segments of portals, content providers, and other Internet information services; software development and licensing; data processing, application service providers, and Internet hosting services; information technology consulting; and technical support, maintenance, and other information technology services.
The other increases came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (2.1%); professional, administrative, and complementary services (2.3%); and services rendered to households (1.3%), mainly due to increased revenue from companies of airway transportation of passengers; cargo logistics; airport operations; inland cargo navigation; pipeline transportation; and storage of goods, in the former sector; advertising agencying services; business management consulting; general business intermediation through apps or e-commerce platforms; general cleaning; management of non-financial intangible assets; and lodging-related booking services, in the second; and hotels; catering services; and restaurants, in the last one.
Conversely, other services (-2.2%) accounted for the only negative influence, largely influenced by lower revenue from auxiliary financial services activities: credit card administration; computer and peripheral equipment repair and maintenance; motor vehicle maintenance and repair; and fund management by contract or commission.
Services grow in 12 of the 27 Federation Units in July
Regionally, the smallest portion (12) of the 27 Federation Units reported an expansion in services volume in July 2025 from the previous month, highlighting the slight increase observed in Brazil (0.3%).
The main positive impacts came from São Paulo (1.7%), followed by Paraná (1.7%), Mato Grosso do Sul (5.7%), Santa Catarina (0.9%), and Rondônia (10.9%). Rio de Janeiro (-1.8%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%), and Amazonas (-3.5%), on the other hand, accounted for the main negative influences in the month.
Against July 2024, the increase in volume of services in Brazil (2.8%) was observed in 14 of the 27 states. The most important positive contribution came from São Paulo (6.0%), followed by Paraná (4.9%), Mato Grosso do Sul (15.9%) and Mato Grosso (6.2%). Rio de Janeiro (-2.9%) led the losses, followed by Minas Gerais (-2.0%), the Federal District (-2.8%) and Bahia (-2.6%).
From January to July 2025, against the same period in 2024, 19 of the 27 Federation Units in Brazil had increases in volume of services. The main positive impact in regional terms was in São Paulo (4.3%), followed by the Federal District (6.3%), Santa Catarina (4.3%), and Rio de Janeiro (1.3%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-7.1%) recorded the main negative impact on the national index.
Tourism activities decrease by 0.7% in July
In July 2025, the tourism activities index decreased by 0.7% from the previous month, the third consecutive negative result, a period with a cumulative drop of 2.3%. As a result, the tourism sector is 10.3% above the February 2020 level and 3.0% below its time series peak, of December 2024.
Ten of the 17 areas surveyed followed this downward trend in national tourism (-0.7%) - Chart 8. The most significant negative impact was found in Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%), followed by Bahia (-2.1%) and Amazonas (-5.9%). Conversely, São Paulo (0.6%) led increases in tourism this month, followed by Paraná (2.0%) and Minas Gerais (1.1%).

On the other hand, Minas Gerais (-8.1%) had the main negative impact of the month.

The cumulative index from January to July 2025, the special aggregate of tourism activities showed a 6.1% increase against the same period last year, driven mainly by revenue increases obtained by companies in the sectors of airway transportation of passengers; lodging-related booking services; hotels; catering services; and restaurants. Regionally, fourteen of the seventeen locations investigated also registered positive rates, with increases from São Paulo (6.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (12.7%) standing out, followed by Bahia (8.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (10.8%), Paraná (5.8%), and Santa Catarina (5.6%). Minas Gerais (-2.7%), Mato Grosso (-4.0%), and Alagoas (-0.7%) recorded the only losses in tourism.
Transportation of passengers decreases and transportation of cargo advances in July
In July 2025, passenger transportation volume in Brazil decreased by 2.1% from the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, thus eliminating part of the cumulative increase over the previous five months (13.9%). Thus, the segment, in this reference month, is 9.6% above the February 2020 (pre-pandemic) level and 15.7% below February 2014 (the peak of the time series). In turn, volume of cargo transportation increased 1.0% in July 2025, the second consecutive positive result, a period with a cumulative increase of 1.8%. Thus, the segment is 4.8% below the peak of the series (July 2023). Against the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 37.5% above February 2020.
From July 2024, passenger transportation increased by 8.7% in July 2025, the eleventh consecutive positive result. Cargo transportation grew by 3.2% in the same comparison, recording its third consecutive increase and the highest rate since April 2024.
From January to July 2025, passenger transportation increased by 7.0% from the same period in 2024, while cargo transportation decreased by 0.4% over the same period.
