Volume of services changes by -0.2% in January

In January 2025, volume of services in Brazil decreased by 0.2% from the immediately previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, after stability (0.0%) in December 2024. As a result, the sector is 15.9% above the February 2020 figure (pre-pandemic result) and 1.1% below that of October 2024 (peak of the time series).

In the non-adjusted series, against January 2024, volume of services advanced 1.6%, with its 10th consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index in 12 months, having increased by 2.9% in January 2025, reduced the pace of increse against December 2024 (3.2%).

The negative trend of volume of services (0.2%) in January 2025, in the seasonally-adjusted series, was followed by three of the five activities surveyed, among which transportation (-1.8%) stands out, after an increase of 0.2% in December last year. The other drops came from services rendered to families (-2.4%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.5%), where the former partially elimnated the increase of 7.0% reached between May and December 2024, and the latter had its third consecutive drop, with a loss of 3.7% in the period.

On the other hand, information and communication (2.3%) and other services (2.3%) accounted for the only advances in January 2025; the former had a cumulative increase of 2.8% in the last three months, whereas the latter recovered part of the loss oberved in December 2024 (-4.1%).

The quarterly moving average was -0.4% in the quarter ended January 2025 against the previous month. Among the sectors, also in the seasonally adjusted series, four of the five subsectors surveyed also dropped: transportation (-1.8%); professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.2%); other services (-0.2%); and services rendered to families (-0.1%), whereas information and communication (0.9%) recorded the only advance this month. 

Against January 2024, volume of services increased by 1.6% in January 2025, tenth consecutive positive result. Advance this month was followed by three of the five dissemination activities, with increase in 47.0% of the 166 types of services surveyed.

Among the sectors, information and communication (7.5%) accounted for the main positive impact, driven by the increase of portals, Internet providers and other information services on the Internet; telecommunications; software development and licensing; development of computer programs in demand; and consulting in information technology. 

The other advances came from services rendered to families  (1.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.4%), due, to a great extent, to the higher revenue from restaurants, in the former, and organization of events (except cultural and sports ones), business intermediation by means of e-commerce platforms, engineering services, lodging booking services and agencying of publicity, in the latter. On the other hand, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-0.6%) and other services (-1.5%) accounted for the main negative influences, mainly due to the lower revenue from road cargo transportation, mass road transportation of passengers, mailing, railway cargo transportation and inland navigation, in the former, and auxiliary financial services, and fund management agreement or commission, in the latter.

In January, services drop in 17 of the 27 Federaton Units 

By area, most (17) of the 27 Federation Units recorded a drop in volume of services in January 2025, against the immediately previous month, following the decrease observed in Brazil (-0.2%).

The main negative impacts came from the Federal District (-8.7%), Minas Gerais (-1.7%), Pernambuco (-4.5%), Amazonas (-7.0%) and Espírito Santo (-5.2%). The main positive influences came from São Paulo (0.9%), Rio de Janeiro (1.0%) and Santa Catarina (3.4%).

From January 2024, the increase of volume of sales in Brazil (1.6%) was observed in only 13 of the 27 Federation Units. The most important positive contribution was found in São Paulo (4.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (3.8%), Santa Catarina (3.2%) and Minas Gerais (0.9%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-25.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-8.2%) and Paraná (-1.9%) led the drops in the month. 

Tourism activities fell 6.4% in January

In January 2025, the index of tourism activities dropped 6.4% from the immediately previous month, after an increase of 3.1% in December. As a result, the tourism segment is 7.2% above the February 2020 result and 6.4% below the peak of the time series, of December 2024.

By area, 12 of the 17 areas surveyed had this movement of retraction observed in the natural tourism activity (-6.4%). The most relevant negative influence was that of São Paulo (-8.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-5.4%), Minas Gerais (-4.2%) and Paraná (-5.5%). On the other hand, Bahia (1.5%), Santa Catarina (1.7%) and Ceará (1.4%) led the gains of tourism.

In the January 2025 / January 2024 comparison, the index of tourism activities in Brazil increased by 3.5%, eighth positive result in a row, mainly due to the rise of revenue in companies of airlines for transportation of passengers, restaurants and booking services related to accomodation. 

Twelve of the 17 Federation Units where the indicator is surveyed showed advance in tourism services, mainly in São Paulo (4.0%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.6%), Bahia (9.0%), Santa Catarina (7.0%) and Goiás (8.6%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-6.1%), Minas Gerais (-1.9%) and Mato Grosso (-11.4%) accounted for the main negative impacts in the month. 

Passager transportation (-7.6%) and cargo transportation (-0.7%) recorded drops

In January 2025, the volume of passenger transportation in Brazil dropped 7.6% from the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after an increase of 0.8% in December. Therefore, the segment is, in tis reference month, 3.4% below the level of February 2020 (pre pandemic) and 25.1% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

The volume of cargo transportation dropped 0.7% in January 2025, third decrease in a row, with a cumulative loss of 3.3%. The segment is now 8.9% below the peak of the series (July 2023). As for the pre pandemic level, transportation of cargo is 30.9% above that of February 2020.

From January 2024, transportation of passengers advanced 1.5% in January 2025, fifthe positive result in a row. Transportation of cargo droped 4.5%, and recorded the third consecutive decrease.
