In October, industry declined in four of the 15 places surveyed

In October 2024, national industrial production changed by -0.2% compared to September, in the seasonally adjusted series, and four of the 15 places surveyed showed negative rates.

The sharpest declines were in Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%). Pará (7.0%), Mato Grosso (4.6%), Paraná (3.7%) and Ceará (3.5%) showed the most intense advances.

The quarterly moving average (0.3%) was positive in ten of the 15 places surveyed, with the sharpest expansions being recorded in Mato Grosso (2.3%), Goiás (1.4%), Pará (0.9%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Santa Catarina (0.7%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (-1.7%) and Amazonas (-1.1%) showed the biggest declines in October 2024.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the industry grew 5.8% in October 2024, with positive results in 16 of the 18 places surveyed. The most intense increases were in Rio Grande do Norte (25.0%), Pará (12.5%), Santa Catarina (12.2%), Mato Grosso (12.0%) and Paraná (11.3%).

In the cumulative total for 2024, the 3.4% increase in the national industry was followed by positive results in all 18 places surveyed. Rio Grande do Norte (10.6%), Ceará (8.6%) and Santa Catarina (7.4%) recorded the most significant increases.

Four of the 15 places surveyed showed negative rates in October, in the seasonally adjusted series. Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%) recorded the sharpest declines, with the former eliminating part of the 2.0% increase recorded in the previous month, and the latter marking the second consecutive month of decline in production, a period in which it accumulated a reduction of 3.0%.

Pernambuco (-0.8%) and Espírito Santo (-0.5%) completed the set of places with negative rates in October 2024.

On the other hand, Pará (7.0%), Mato Grosso (4.6%), Paraná (3.7%) and Ceará (3.5%) showed the highest increases this month, with the first location interrupting three consecutive months of decline in production, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 7.5%; the second accumulating a gain of 9.3% in four consecutive months of positive rates; the third intensifying the 1.1% growth observed in the previous month; and the fourth eliminating part of the 5.2% drop seen last September.

Bahia (2.3%), Goiás (2.0%), São Paulo (2.0%), Amazonas (1.7%), Santa Catarina (1.0%), Minas Gerais (0.6%) and the Northeast Region (0.1%) recorded the other positive results in October 2024.

The quarterly moving average index for industry increased by 0.3% in the quarter ended in October, compared to the level of the previous month, and ten of the 15 places surveyed showed positive rates, with a highlight to the sharpest increases recorded by Mato Grosso (2.3%), Goiás (1.4%), Pará (0.9%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Santa Catarina (0.7%).

On the other hand, Pernambuco (-1.7%) and Amazonas (-1.1%) showed the biggest declines in October 2024.

Compared to October 2023, the industry showed growth of 5.8% in October 2024, with 16 of the 18 places surveyed reporting positive results. It is worth mentioning that October 2024 (23 days) had 2 more business days than the same month in the previous year (21).

Rio Grande do Norte (25.0%), Pará (12.5%), Santa Catarina (12.2%), Mato Grosso (12.0%) and Paraná (11.3%) recorded double-digit expansions, the sharpest for this month, driven largely by the activities of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel and aviation kerosene), in the first place; mining and quarrying industries (manganese and iron ore – raw or processed), in the second; for the manufacture of apparel and accessories (men's pants, women's blouses, shirts and similar items, T-shirts, dresses, shorts and similar items and women's suits), food products (frozen poultry meat and offal, sausages or salami products and other preparations of pork and poultry meat, cheeses and animal feed), electrical machinery, equipment and materials (refrigerators or freezers for domestic use, alternating or direct current electric engines, transformers, panels, cabinets and other supports with electrical switching or protection devices and kitchen stoves for domestic use), machinery and equipment (elevators or transporting devices for goods, compressors for refrigeration equipment, evaporation devices for air cooling and centrifugal pumps) and wood products (sawn, planed or polished wood, fibreboards, wooden doors and windows and plywood, veneered and laminated wood), in the third; of food products (fresh or chilled beef, cakes, bagasse, bran and other residues from the extraction of soybean oil, refined and crude soybean oil and frozen poultry meat and offal), in the fourth; and of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and auto parts) and food products (starches or powders, animal feed and frozen beef), in the last.

Ceará (8.5%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (7.2%) also showed higher positive rates than the national average (5.8%), while São Paulo (5.8%), Minas Gerais (5.4%), Maranhão (5.0%), Amazonas (4.3%), the Northeast Region (4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.7%), Espírito Santo (1.7%), Bahia (1.7%) and Goiás (1.5%) completed the set of places with growth in production this month.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-5.8%) recorded the steepest decline, largely driven by the activity of mining and quarrying industries (crude petroleum). Pernambuco, with a drop of 0.7%, also showed a negative result in the monthly index for October 2024.

In the comparison between the results of the second four-month period of the year and the period of September-October 2024, both comparisons against the same periods of the previous year, 13 of the 18 places surveyed showed an increase in dynamism, thus following the movement observed in the national total, which went from 2.6% to 4.6%. In regional terms, Mato Grosso (from -0.2% to 8.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -5.1% to 2.8%), Espírito Santo (from -5.5% to 1.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from 4.9% to 10.5%), Pernambuco (from -0.2% to 8.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -5.1% to 2.8%), Espírito Santo (from -5.5% to 1.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from 4.9% to 10.5%), Pernambuco (from 1.9% to 5.5%), Santa Catarina (from 6.6% to 9.7%), the Northeast Region (from 2.7% to 5.8%) and Minas Gerais (from 2.3% to 5.3%) showed the sharpest increases, while Rio de Janeiro (from 1.4% to -5.6%), Rio Grande do Norte (from 4.2% to -1.6%), Pará (from 9.6% to 5.3%) and Ceará (from 10.1% to 7.5%) showed the biggest losses between the two periods.

In the cumulative indicator for the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, there was an expansion of 3.4%, with positive results in the 18 places surveyed. Rio Grande do Norte (10.6%), Ceará (8.6%) and Santa Catarina (7.4%) recorded the sharpest increases in the cumulative index for the first ten months of 2024.

Mato Grosso do Sul (5.5%), Pará (4.7%), Paraná (4.2%), São Paulo (4.0%), Maranhão (4.0%), Mato Grosso (3.9%) and Goiás (3.7%) also showed more intense positive rates than the national average (3.4%), while Minas Gerais (3.1%), Pernambuco (3.1%), Bahia (2.9%), Amazonas (2.4%), the Northeast Region (2.1%), Rio de Janeiro (1.5%), Espírito Santo (0.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.2%) completed the set of places with growth in production in the cumulative index for the year.

The cumulative total over the last 12 months, having advanced 3.0% in October 2024, continued to show a positive rate and intensified the pace of expansion compared to the results of previous months.

In regional terms, 17 of the 18 places surveyed recorded positive rates in October 2024, but only 11 showed greater dynamism compared to the rates of last September. Rio Grande do Norte (from 7.8% to 10.8%), Maranhão (from 2.4% to 3.7%), Amazonas (from 0.0% to 1.1%), Pará (from 5.4% to 6.2%), Santa Catarina (from 6.0% to 6.7%), São Paulo (from 2.7% to 3.2%) and Minas Gerais (from 2.7% to 3.2%) recorded the main gains between September and October 2024, while Espírito Santo (from 5.0% to 3.8%), Pernambuco (from 4.7% to 3.6%), Goiás (from 6.8% to 5.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (from 3.4% to 2.8%) showed the largest losses between the two periods.
