In October 2024, retail sales change by 0.4%

In October 2024, retail sales volume increased by 0.4% compared to September, in the seasonally adjusted series. In the previous month, there was a positive change of 0.6%. The quarterly moving average changed by 0.3% in the quarter ended in October.

In the series without adjustment, retail trade rose 6.5% compared to October 2023, the 17th consecutive positive rate. The cumulative total for the year reached 5.0%, while the cumulative total for the last 12 months was 4.4%.

In extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction materials and wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, the volume of sales increased 0.9% in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average grew 0.8%. In the series without adjustment, extended retail increased 8.8%, accumulating an increase of 4.9% in the year compared to the same period in 2023 and 4.3% in 12 months.

Six of the eight activities advance compared to September

In terms of sectors, there was a predominance of positive rates, reaching six of the eight activities surveyed. Furniture and household appliances (7.5%), Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (2.7%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (1.3%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.3%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.3%) recorded positive rates. Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-1.1%) and Other personal and household articles (-1.5%) saw a decrease from September to October.

In the context of extended retail trade, the following two activities grew from September to October: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, with 8.1%, and Construction materials, with 0.7%.

Seven retail activities advance compared to October 2023

Compared to October 2023, seven of the eight sectors investigated had positive results: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (16.1%), Furniture and household appliances (9.9%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (7.9%), Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (6.3%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (5.6%), Other personal and household articles (4.7%) and Fuels and lubricants (2.2%).

Only Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-9.3%) had negative results.

In extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces grew by 27.4%, Construction materials increased by 12.2% and Specialized wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco fell by 5.8% in October 2024, compared to October 2023.

Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles showed a 16.1% increase in sales compared to October 2023, the twentieth consecutive positive point of growth (the last month to register negative changes on an annual basis was February: -0.5%). The sector had the second largest influence on total retail, adding 1.6 pp of 6.5%. In relation to the cumulative rate in the year up to October, going from 14.7% up to September to 14.9% in the reference month, the activity shows maintenance of growth. In the last 12 months, the result of 13.3% up to October 2024 is 0.6 pp higher than the cumulative result up to September.

The Furniture and household appliances group showed a 9.9% growth in the volume of sales for October 2024, compared to October 2023, after registering a change of -0.2% when comparing September 2024 with the same month of the previous year. The cumulative indicator for the year up to October 2024 shows gains of 3.9%, which represents 0.6 pp above that recorded up to September (3.3%). For the last 12 months, up to October, the result was 3.6%, the sixteenth consecutive month to record gains.

The Textiles, apparel and footwear sector showed a 7.9% increase in sales compared to October 2023 (-3.4%), the sixth consecutive non-negative point. In the interannual indicator, of the ten months recorded in 2024, only three showed negative results: February, with -0.5%; March, with -0.9%; and -3.7% in April compared to the same month of the previous year. The year-to-date growth is positive: 0.6% up to July, 1.2% up to August, 1.5% up to September and 2.1% up to October. The same scenario is presented for the cumulative total over the last 12 months: 0.9% up to August, 1.3% up to September and 2.2% up to October.

In the case of Office, computer and communication equipment and materials, there was a 6.3% increase in October 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, the first positive result after two months of decline (-2.8% in August and -4.9% in September). In the year, up to October, the sector has accumulated a result of 1.7%, above that established up to September (1.2%). For the indicator over the last 12 months, the scenario is similar, since it registers 3.0% up to October, higher than the total accrued up to September 2024 (2.0%).

The Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco segment recorded its sixth consecutive month of growth for the year-on-year indicator: 5.6% in October. In the last 27 months, the only one, in the year-on-year indicator, to have a negative result was in April 2024 (-1.3%). The sector represents the largest contribution among all eight sectors, totaling 3.0 pp of the total of 6.5% of retail in October. As a result, in the year, the cumulative rate is 5.2% until October, with the same value until September. In the last 12 months, the cumulative rate is also positive until October (5.2%).

The group of Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry stores, sporting goods, toys, among others, showed a 4.7% increase in sales compared to October 2023, totaling nine months of consecutive positive results. The sector is expected to recover in 2024, after suffering from the accounting crisis of large companies in the sector, which affected revenue results and reduced the number of physical stores in the country throughout 2023. In the year, the cumulative gains, up to October, are 6.9%, while in the last 12 months the result is also positive: 3.2%.

The Fuels and lubricants activity showed a 2.2% increase in sales from October 2024 compared to October 2023, the first positive result after five months of declines. In terms of the cumulative result in the year up to October, going from -2.4% until September to -2.0% in the reference month, the activity shows a decrease in the pace of losses. The same is true in relation to the cumulative result in the last 12 months, which, going from -2.8% until September to -1.8% in October, shows a cooling in the intensity of losses for this indicator as well.

As for the Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery sector, there was a 9.3% drop in sales compared to October 2023, against -10.5% in September 2024 compared to September 2023. For this indicator, the sector has totaled six consecutive months of declines. Still in the year-on-year comparison, in the last 21 months, only one registered growth: April, with 2.4%. In relation to the cumulative total for the year, the losses until October (-7.8%) have a similar intensity to those until September (-7.7%). In terms of cumulative results over the last 12 months, the scenario is also one of losses: from -7.3% until September to -7.6% until October 2024.

In extended retail, the Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces activity showed a 27.4% growth in sales compared to October 2023, the eighteenth consecutive increase and the second largest, in terms of amplitude in the year (the first was in April: 29.0%). The sectoral contribution to the overall calculation of extended retail was the most effective, with 5.0 pp of the total of 8.8%. In relation to the cumulative total for the year,

The indicator records gains throughout 2024, with an increase in intensity in recent months: 13.4% in July, 12.7% in August, 12.9% in September and 14.4% in October. In the cumulative total of the last 12 months, the series has been in positive since June 2023, reaching 14.0% until October 2024.

The Construction Materials sector showed growth of 12.2% in the volume of sales compared to October 2023, the fifth consecutive month to record increases in the year-on-year indicator. As a result, the cumulative gains for the year increased: 4.2% until September against 5.0% until October. In the cumulative total of the last 12 months, the result is also of gains, being 4.1% until October.

Finally, the activity of specialized wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, in the month-on-month comparison, had a 5.8% drop in October, in volume of sales, the third consecutive drop for this indicator. In the year to date, the scenario is of losses (-6.6%) until October, coming from a series of cumulative losses until September (-6.7%). The same is true for the cumulative figures for the last 12 months: -3.7% until September and -4.8% until October.

Retail trade grows 4.4% in the fifth two months of 2024

Retail trade registered an increase of 4.4% in the fifth two-month period of 2024, compared to the same two-month period of 2023. The growth in the period from September to October 2024 represents the thirteenth consecutive positive point in the volume indicator. In terms of sectors, seven activities registered growth in the fifth two-month period: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (16.1%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (5.7%), Other personal and household articles (5.2%), Furniture and household appliances (4.9%), Hypermarkets and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.1%), Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (0.7%) and Fuels and lubricants (0.3%). On the other hand, only Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery registered a decrease in the two-month period: -9.9%.

For extended retail, the fifth two-month period showed an increase (6.1%) and positive changes for two of the complementary activities (20.8% for Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, and 10.8% for Construction materials) and one decrease (-7.4% for Specialized wholesale in food products, beverages and tobacco).

Compared to September, sales increase in 19 Federation Units in October

From September to October 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, the national average retail sales rate increased by 0.4%, with positive results in 19 Federation Units, with a highlight to Roraima (4.3%), Espírito Santo (3.1%) and Mato Grosso (2.1%). On the other hand, eight of the 27 Federation Units were under negative pressure, with a high light to Amazonas (-3.0%), Piauí (-1.1%) and Amapá (-1.0%).

In extended retail trade, the change between September and October 2024 was 0.9%, also with a predominance of positive results, in 22 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Tocantins (4.6%), Roraima (4.4%) and Rondônia (3.6%). On the other hand, five of the 27 Federation Units are under negative pressure, with a highlight to Goiás (-0.9%), Paraíba (-0.9%) and Paraná (-0.9%).

Against 2023, sales increase in all Federation Units

Compared to October 2023, the change in retail sales in the current month was 6.5%, with a predominance of positive results in all 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Paraíba (19.0%), Roraima (18.1%) and Alagoas (12.1%).

In extended retail trade, the change between October 2024 and October 2023 was 8.8%, with positive results also in all 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Paraná (26.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (16.8%) and Paraíba (16.4%).
