Agricultural storage capacity increases by 5.4% and reaches 222.3 million tonnes in the first semester of 2024

In the first semester of 2024, the available storage capacity in Brazil amounted to 222.3 million tons, 5.4% above that in the previous quarter, 5.4% higher than in the previous semester. The number of establishments increased by 3.5% from the last semester of 2023.
Rio Grande do Sul has the biggest number of storage establishments (2,444) and Mato Grosso, the greater storage capacity: 59.2 million tonnes.
In the first semester of 2024, all the Major Regions in the country recorded increase in the number of The establishments: North (24.0%), Central West (5.5%), Southeast (0.2%), South (1.3%) and Northeast (3.3%).
The stocks of farm products amounted to 87.9 million tonnes, an increase of 15.5% against the 76.1 million tonnes of June 30, 2023.
As for the five main agricultural products found in storage units, soybeans accounted for the biggest volume (43.3 million tonnes), followed by corn (32.7 million), rice (5.0 million), wheat (2.6 million) and coffee (0.8 million). These products make up 96.1% of the total stored among the products surveyed.
Silo capacity reaches 117.5 million tonnes, with an increase of 6.8%
As for useful capacity, silos are predominant in the country, having reached 117.5 million tonnes, accounting for 52.9% of the total useful capacity. Against the second quarter of 2023, the silos recorded a increase of 6.8% in capacity.

Bulk warehouses reached 80.9 million tonnes of useful capacity, 4.0% above the figure in the previous period. This type of torage represents 36.4% of the total in the country.
Conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses amounted to 23.9 million tonnes, which means an increase of 3.3% eagainst the second quarter of 2023. These warehouses account for 10.7% of the total storage capacity.
Silos are predominant in the South, and make up 65.1% of the storage capacity in that Majoar Region. In terms of installed capacity, silos represent 44.4% of the total in the country.
The bulk type is mostly observed in the Central West Region, where it accounts for 50.7% of the capacity. This Major Region is rsponsible for 59.2% of the total storage in Brazil. That makes senses as the Major Region has huge prperties and groups engaged in agribusiness, which produce a grat number of grain, thus being more adequate for this type of storage.
Conventiona, structural and inflatable warehouses are predominant in the South Region (34.3%), followed by the Southeast (32.5%). These Major Regions are, respectively, major producers of rice and coffee, products that are stored in sacks and that use this type of warehouse. Together, the South and the Southeast correspond to 66.8% of the total capacity of conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses.
Number of establishments increased in all the Major Regions
The Survey of Stocks found 9,424 active establishments in the first semester of 2024, an increase of 3.5% from the second semester of 2023. In this first semester of 2024, the five Major Regions in the country recorded increases in the number of establishments: North (24.0%), Central West (5.5%), Southeast (0.2%), South (1.3%) and Northeast (3.3%).
Rio Grande do Sul has the biggest number of storage establishments (2,444), followed by Mato Grosso (1,716) and Paraná (1,369). Mato Grosso has the biggest storage capacity in the country, 59.2 million tonnes. From this total, 57.7% are of the bulk type and 37,9%, silos. Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná have 38.3 and 35.0 million tonnes of capacity, respectively, with silo as the predominant type.
Stocks of corn and rice increase, and those of soybeans, wheat and coffee drop
The stock of agricultural products reached 87.9 million tonnes, an increase of 15.5% from the 76.1 million tonnes of June 30 , 2023.
In the first semester of 2024, corn (91.4%) and rice (2.4%) showed increase in stock, whereas soybeans (-7.8%), wheat (-19.4%) and coffee, recorded drops.
These products represent 96.1% of the total stored among the products investigated in this survey, whereas cotton, black beans, color beans and other types of grain and seeds account for the remaining 3.9%.
