IPCA was 0.44% in September

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) for September was 0.44%, 0.46 percentage points above the August rate (-0.02%). This year, the IPCA has accumulated an increase of 3.31% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.42%, above the 4.24% observed in the previous 12 months. In September 2023, the change had been 0.26%.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, two had the greatest influence on September's results: Housing (1.80%) and Food and beverages (0.50%), which contributed 0.27 percentage points (pp) and 0.11 pp, respectively. The other groups were between the -0.31% index for Personal expenses and 0.46% for Health and Personal Care.

In the Housing group (1.80%), the result was mainly influenced by residential electricity, which went from -2.77% in August to 5.36% in September, with the red tariff flag level 1 in effect, which adds R$4.463 to every 100 kWh consumed. In addition, the following tariff adjustments were observed: Porto Alegre (7.01%), with an average increase of 0.06% in one of the electricity comapnies as of August 19; Vitória (6.79%), with a reduction of 1.96% as of August 7; São Luís (4.07%), with a reduction of 1.11% as of August 28; and Belém (2.79%), with a reduction of 2.75% as of August 7.

Tariff increases were also recorded for water and sewage fees (0.08%) in the following areas: Fortaleza (1.46%), with an 8.05% rise starting on August 5; Salvador (0.36%), with a 5.81% increase starting on August 1; and Vitória (0.27%), with a 4.31% rise starting on August 1.

Also in Housing, the increase in bottled gas (2.40%) stands out. In addition, the result for piped gas (0.02%) is due to the average increase of 2.77% in Rio de Janeiro (0.17%), starting on August 1; and the change in the structure of consumption bands on bills in Curitiba, starting on August 1 (-0.25%).

In Food and beverages (0.50%), food at home increased by 0.56%, after two consecutive months of decline. Increases were observed in the prices of papaya (10.34%), oranges (10.02%), ground coffee (4.02%) and sirloin steak (3.79%). On the downside, the highlights were onions (-16.95%), tomatoes (-6.58%) and potatoes (-6.56%).

Food away from home (0.34%) recorded a change close to that of the previous month (0.33%). The meal sub-item slowed from 0.44% in August to 0.18% in September, while snacks accelerated from 0.11% to 0.67%.

In the Transportation group (0.14%), the price increase in the group was influenced by the increase in airfares (4.64%). Regarding fuels (-0.02%), gasoline (-0.12%) and diesel fuel (-0.11%) showed declines, while ethanol (0.75%) and vehicle gas (0.03%) recorded price increases.

Regionally, the largest change occurred in Goiânia (1.08%), influenced by the increase in gasoline (6.24%) and residential electricity (4.68%). On the other hand, the smallest change occurred in Aracaju (0.07%), due to the declines in onions (-25.07%), tomatoes (-18.62%) and gasoline (-1.68%).

To calculate the monthly index, prices collected from August 30 to September 27, 2024 (reference) were compared with prices in effect from July 30 to August 29, 2024 (base). Calculated by the IBGE since 1980, the indicator refers to families with monetary income of 01 to 40 minimum wages, regardless of the source, and covers ten Metropolitan Areas of the country, in addition to the cities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.

INPC rises 0.48% in September

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC rose 0.48% in September, 0.62 pp above the result observed in August (-0.14%). In the year, the INPC has accumulated an increase of 3.29% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.09%, above the 3.71% observed in the preceding 12 months. In September 2023, the rate was 0.11%.

Food products rose 0.49% in September, after two consecutive declines. In turn, the change in non-food products accelerated from 0.02% in August to 0.48% in September.

As for regional indexes, Goiânia recorded the highest increase (1.05%), due to gasoline (6.24%) and residential electricity (4.73%). The smallest change was observed in Aracaju (0.08%), due to the declines in the prices of onions (-25.07%), tomatoes (-18.62%) and gasoline (-1.68%).
