In July, retail sales grow 0.6%

In July 2024, retail sales volume grew 0.6% compared to June, in the seasonally adjusted series, after a drop of 0.9% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average, after registering 0.3% in the quarter ended in June 2024, showed a change of 0.2% in the quarter ended in July.

In the non-adjusted series, retail sales grew by 4.4%, the 14th consecutive increase – in June, it was 4.1%. The cumulative index of the year compared to the same period in 2023 is 5.1%, while the cumulative index l for the last 12 months was 3.7%.
In the extended retail sales, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction materials and wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, the volume of sales changed by 0.1% compared to June, in the seasonally adjusted series, a change close to stability, as in the previous month (0.3%). The quarterly moving average shows a change of 0.4% until July, against 0.1% until June.
In the non-adjusted series, extended retail sales grew by 7.2%, accumulating a year-to-date increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2023 and 3.8% in 12 months.
Five of the eight activities grow compared to June
In July, the 0.6% growth in Brazilian retail trade was followed by most activity groups, with five of the eight showing growth: Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (2.2%), Other personal and household articles (2.1%), Fabrics, wearing apparel and footwear (1.8%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.7%) and Furniture and household appliances (1.4%). Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.1%) remained close to stability. harmaceutical. medical. orthopedic. articles and toiletries (-1.5%) and Fuels and lubricants (-1.1%) recorded a decline from June to July.

Within the scope of extended retail trade, the activity of Vehicles and motorcycles. parts and pieces increased by 3,8% while Construction materials changed by -0.2%.
Six retail activities grow compared to July 2023
Compared to July 2023, six of the eight sectors investigated also remained with positive results: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, articles and toiletries (16.0%), Other personal and household articles (10.6%), Furniture and household appliances (8.1%), Fabrics, wearing apparel and footwear (5.2%). Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.0%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (0.3%).
With negative results were Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.0%) and Fuels and lubricants (-4.3%).
In extended retail trade, the three additional sectors had positive results: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (20,3%), Construction materials (11.0%) and Wholesale of food products. beverages and tobacco (0.6%).

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, articles and toiletries grew 16.0% in volume of sales compared to July 2023, reaching the 17th consecutive month of growth – the last drop whad been in February 2023, when it showed -0.5% compared to February 2022. The sector presented the second largest contribution to the year-on-year indicator, adding 1.5 percentage points (pp) to the total of 4.4% of retail. In the year, until July, the gain was 14.3% above the same period in 2023 and in 12 months the result was 11.2%.
The group of Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry stores, sporting goods, toy stores, among others, showed a 10.6% increase in sales compared to July 2023, the sixth consecutive year-on-year increase (the last point to record a drop had been January 2024: -2.1%). Up to July, the sector has accumulated gains of 8.1%, compared to the same period of the previous year, accelerating in relation to June (7.7%). The cumulative result over the last 12 months changes direction with the start of July, moving into the positive field (+0.1%) for the first time since May 2022 (1.6%).
In the case of Furniture and hoousehold appliances, the sector recorded 8.1% growth in the volume of sales compared to July 2023, the fourth consecutive positive result and the largest amplitude of the period (7.9% in April, 2.0% in May and 6.7% in June). In relation to the cumulative total for the year up to July, by going from 2.5% in June to 3.3%, the activity shows an intensification of the pace of gains. In terms of cumulative results in the last 12 months, the result up to July 2024 (2.5%) is the third consecutive above 2.0% for this indicator (2.0% up to May and 2.2% up to June).
The Fabrics, wearing apparel and footwear sector showed a 5.2% increase in the volume of sales compared to July 2023, the third non-negative result in a row (2.0% in May and 0.0% in June). In the year, up to July, the sector reversed the trend of losses recorded in the previous four months: -0.3% up to March, -1.2% up to April, -0.4% up to May, -0.4% up to May and +0.5% up to July. In comparison with the last 12 months, the indicator continues to accumulate losses for twenty consecutive months, having registered -0.2% up to July.
The group of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco grew 3.0% in sales compared to July 2023, the third consecutive increase and the smallest in the period (10.2% in May, 3.6% in June and 3.0% in July). The sector contributed the most to the formation of the year-on-year rate, accounting for 1.7 pp of the total of 4.4% in this comparison. In relation to the cumulative total for the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the month of July returns to the level of gains until April indicating a slowdown: 5.6% until April, 6.5% until May, 6.0% until June and 5.6% until July.
The activity of Office, computer and coummunication equipment and material showed a change of 0.3% compared to July 2023, the second consecutive positive result (-0.5% in May and 5.2% in June). In the year-to-date indicator, the result up to July 2024 was 2.7%, the fourth consecutive point to accumulate gains (3.6% in April, 2.7% in May and 3.1% in June). The indicator for the cumulative figure over the last 12 months has recorded gains for the twenty-second consecutive month (3.4% up to July 2024).
The Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery sector reported a 5.0% drop in the volume of sales compared to July 2023, the fourth consecutive drop in 2024 and the sixth out of the seven months recorded up to July (April was the only one to record an increase: 2.4%). In the year, the sector has accumulated losses up to July (-7.3%) compared to the same period of the previous year, the same level as in the previous months (-7.5% up to May and -7.6% up to June). In 12 months, the loss is 8.5% up to July, compared to the previous 12 months.
The Fuels and lubricants group showed a 4.3% drop in sales compared to July 2023, the fourth consecutive drop and the sixth in the year (January, with +0.8% and April, with +1.8%, were the exceptions in 2024). Additionally, the activity was the only retail activity to contribute negatively to the total sum of the 4.4% rate of the year-on-year indicator, with -0.5 pp. In relation to the cumulative total in the year up to July, going from -1.9% until June to -2.2% in the reference month, the activity shows a trend of losses in relation to the same period in 2023. The same is true for the cumulative total in the last 12 months, which went from -3.2% until June to -3.3% in July.
Including activities with extended retail, the volume of sales of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces showed an increase of 20.3% in sales compared to July 2023, the 15th consecutive positive month (the last to register a drop was April 2023, with -2.0%). The sector was also the one that contributed the most to the year-on-year rate, adding 3.7 pp to the total of 7.2% of the extended retail. The cumulative total for the year up to July registers a gain of 13.4% over the same period in 2023. In the last 12 months, the cumulative total was positive at 12.4%, above that recorded up to June (11.5%).
The Construction Materials sector reported an 11.0% growth in sales compared to July 2023, the second consecutive increase for this indicator (3.9% in June). In relation to the cumulative total in the year up to July, going from 2.1% up to June to 3.4%, the activity intensified the pace of gains, the same trajectory as the cumulative total for 12 months: 0.9% up to June and 1.9% up to July.
In the case of Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco, the interannual indicator grew 0.6% in July 2024, the first positive result after four months of decline. For the year, the result is negative, accumulating 5.6% losses until July 2024. When comparing the last 12 months with the previous 12 months, the result is also negative, although less intense: -1.0% until July 2024.
Sales increase in 15 Federation Units from June to July
From June to July 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, the growth in sales of the national retail trade was followed by positive rates in 15 of the 27 Federation Units (FU), with emphasis on: Tocantins (6.7%), Piauí (3.5%) and Paraíba (3.0%). On the other hand, with a negative impact, Mato Grosso do Sul (-2.8%), Roraima (-2.4%) and Amapá (-1.7%) stood out.
For the same comparison, in extended retail trade, there were 14 states with positive results, with emphasis on: Piauí (8.4%), Tocantins (7.0%) and Acre (2.0%). On the other hand, with a negative impact, the highlights were Mato Grosso do Sul (-4.8%), Maranhão (-1.6%) and Espírito Santo (-1.1%).
Compared to July 2023, sales increase in 25 states
Compared to July 2023, the change in sales in retail trade, in the current month, was predominantly positive in regional terms, reaching 25 of the 27 states, with emphasis on: Tocantins (18.1%), Paraíba (18.0%) and Piauí (16.4%). The only non-positive results were the stability of Roraima (0.0%) and the drop in Rio Grande do Sul (-4.6%).
In extended retail trade, 26 states had a positive rate, with highlights for: Goiás (17.2%), Piauí (15.7%) and Paraíba (15.0%). Rio Grande do Sul recorded the only drop in extended retail, of 0.9% in this comparison.
