Quarterly Livestock Surveys: Cattle slaughter hits record in time series; slaughter of chicken, hogs and pigs also grows

The results of animal production in the 2nd quarter of 2024 indicate that cattle slaughter increased by 17.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and by 6.7% compared to the previous quarter, reaching a record in the time series.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs increased by 2.5% and chicken slaughter increased by 3.2% compared to the same period in 2023. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2024, pig slaughter increased by 3.9% and chicken slaughter increased by 1.0%.
Raw milk acquisition in the 2nd quarter of 2024 was 5.83 billion liters, an increase of 0.8% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023 and a decrease of 6.2% compared to the previous quarter.
The acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries increased by 16.9% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023 and by 8.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024, totaling 10.08 million leather pieces.
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, 1.16 billion dozen hen eggs were produced, an increase of 9.8% compared to the same period of the previous year and an increase of 5.6% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024.

Cattle slaughter increases by 17.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and reaches a record in the time series, begun in 1997
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, 9.96 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service. This is a record, considering the entire time series of the survey, which began in 1997. In comparison with the same period of the previous year, there was an increase of 17.5% and in relation to the 1st quarter of 2024, the growth was 6.7%.
May was the month with the highest activity of the quarter, with a total slaughter of 3.38 million head, a positive change of 11.6% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The slaughter of females increased by 20.8% compared to the 2nd period of 2023, influenced by the fall in the price of calves in the annual comparison. In the same comparison, male slaughter increased by 14.8%. Exports in the quarter reached an unprecedented mark of 612.44 thousand tonnes, representing an increase of 30.0% in the annual comparison, with records for April and May.
The slaughter of 1.48 million more head of cattle in the 2nd quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, was driven by increases in 26 of the 27 Federation Units (UFs). Among those with a national share of 1.0% or more, the most significant increases occurred in: Mato Grosso (+350.35 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+189.77 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+182.97 thousand head), Pará (+152.67 thousand head), Goiás (+131.75 thousand head), Rondônia (+102.56 thousand head), São Paulo (+98.47 thousand head) and Bahia (+50.32 thousand head).
On the other hand, the flooding of the Guaíba River, which began at the end of April, caused losses to agricultural activities and infrastructure in Rio Grande do Sul. As a result, there was a reduction of 40.45 thousand head slaughtered in the state. In the annual comparison, April showed an increase of 6.1%, but May and June showed decreases of 19.8% and 16.8%, respectively, in the volume of head slaughtered in this state.
With 18.4% of the national share, Mato Grosso continues to lead the slaughter of cattle, followed by Goiás (10.5%) and Minas Gerais (10.1%).
Slaughter of hogs and pigs increases by 2.5% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, 14.57 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, representing an increase of 2.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and an increase of 3.9% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024.
The slaughter of 358.72 thousand more head of hogs and pigs in the 2nd quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, was driven by increases in 17 of the 24 Federation Units. Among the states with a share of at least 1.0%, increases were recorded in: Paraná (+178.12 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+58.95 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+58.84 thousand head), São Paulo (+30.89 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+23.10 thousand head), Goiás (+20.38 thousand head) and Mato Grosso (+8.59 thousand head). On the other hand, the most significant drop occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul (-14.67 thousand head).
Due to the floods in the state, Rio Grande do Sul had the lowest level of activity in the last 4 years for the month of May.
Santa Catarina continues to lead the slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 29.1% of the national share, followed by Paraná (21.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (16.8%).
Chicken slaughter increases by 3.2% compared to the same period in 2023
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, 1.61 billion head of chicken were slaughtered, representing an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2023 and an increase of 1.0% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024. This result is the second highest in the time series that began in 1997, surpassed only by the mark reached in the 1st quarter of 2023 (1.61 billion head).
The slaughter of 50.35 million more head of chicken in the 2nd quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year, was determined by the increase in slaughter in 20 of the 25 FUs that participated in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, there were increases in: Paraná (+33.24 million head), Santa Catarina (+14.42 million head), São Paulo (+8.95 million head), Mato Grosso (+4.75 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+3.18 million head), Pernambuco (+2.03 million head), Goiás (+1.98 million head), Minas Gerais (+1.67 million head) and Bahia (+188.37 thousand head). On the other hand, there was a decrease in Rio Grande do Sul (-24.81 million head).
In the ranking of states, Paraná still leads in chicken slaughter, with 35.1% of the national share, followed by Santa Catarina (13.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (11.0%).
Milk acquisition increased by 0.8% year-on-year
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, raw milk acquisition was 5.83 billion liters, equivalent to an increase of 0.8% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023, and a decrease of 6.2% compared to the preceding quarter.
The increase of 43.80 million liters of milk collected nationwide, compared to the same period in 2023, comes from increases recorded in 16 of the 26 states participating in the Quarterly Survey of Milk.
At the level of the Federation Units, the most significant positive changes occurred in: Minas Gerais (+94.72 million liters), Paraná (+17.92 million liters), Sergipe (+7.19 million liters) and Bahia (+7.08 million liters). The flooding of the Guaíba River affected the dairy chain in Rio Grande do Sul, which presented the greatest decline in the period among the States (-72.56 million liters). Next, negative changes were presented by: Goiás (-9.51 million liters), São Paulo (-6.89 million liters) and Santa Catarina (-6.09 million liters).
Minas Gerais continued to lead the ranking of milk acquisition, with 24.5% of the national collection, followed by Paraná (15.1%), Santa Catarina (12.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (11.1%).
The average price of milk paid to producers increased throughout the quarter, with the advance of drought in several producing regions, ranging from R$2.45 in April to R$2.71 in June. Considering the average of the three months (R$2.60), the price decreased by 4.1% compared to the same period of the previous year and increased by 15.6% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024.
Leather acquisition grows 16.9% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, the tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported having received 10.08 million pieces of leather. This total represents an increase of 16.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 8.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024.
The comparison between the 2nd quarters of 2023 and 2024 indicates a positive change of 1.46 million pieces in the total purchased by establishments. Increases were observed in 10 of the 17 Federation Units that had tanneries eligible for the survey. The most significant positive changes, in states with more than 5.0% share in national acquisition, occurred in Goiás (+675.86 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+198.44 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso do Sul (+185.53 thousand pieces), Paraná (+167.04 thousand pieces), Rondônia (+82.89 thousand pieces) and São Paulo (+81.76 thousand pieces). The floods that occurred in Rio Grande do Sul resulted in a drop of 71.29 thousand pieces acquired (-5.6%) in that state.
Goiás now leads the list of states that receive rawhide pieces for processing, with 18.0% of the national share. Followed by Mato Grosso (16.6%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (12.5%).
Production of hen eggs reaches record in the time series
The production of hen eggs in the 2nd quarter of 2024 reached 1.16 billion dozen, corresponding to an increase of 9.8% in relation to the amount collected in the same quarter in 2023 and an increase of 5.6% in relation to the previous quarter. The survey reached a new record in the time series, surpassing the mark of the first quarter of this year.
The production of 103.38 million dozen more eggs, nationwide, when comparing the 2nd quarters of 2024 and 2023, was a consequence of increases in 20 of the 26 states with farms included in the survey universe. The most significant increases occurred in São Paulo (+26.65 million dozen), Minas Gerais (+19.33 million dozen), Pernambuco (+18.40 million dozen) and Espírito Santo (+10.49 million dozen).
It was found that more than half of the farms, 1,094 (54.5%), produced eggs for consumption, accounting for 82.4% of the total eggs produced, while 913 farms (45.5%) produced eggs for hatching, accounting for 17.6% of the total eggs produced.
The State of São Paulo, with 26.3% of national production, remained as the largest egg producer among the Federation Units in the second quarter of 2024, followed by Paraná (9.8%), Minas Gerais (9.7%) and Espírito Santo (8.2%).

A Technical Note was published today on the IBGE website regarding the update of the table and information in the Survey of Hen Egg Production (POG). Technical Note 01/2024 aims at communicating that, starting with the data for the 2nd quarter of 2024, table 915 of POG will be replaced by table 7524 in SIDRA. Retroactive data on production and the number of hens by purpose (consumption and incubation) will also be released.
