IPCA-15 was 0.19% in August

The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) was 0.19% in August, 0.11 percentage points below the July rate (0.30%).

In the last 12 months, the IPCA-15 accumulated 4.35%, below the 4.45% observed in the previous 12 months. In August 2023, the rate was 0.28%.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, eight rose in August. The largest change and the greatest positive impact came from Transportation (0.83% and 0.17 pp), followed by Education (0.75% and 0.05 pp). In turn, the Food and Beverage group (-0.80% and -0.17 pp) fell for the second consecutive month. The other changes ranged from 0.09% for Communication to 0.71% for Household Articles.

In the Transportation group (0.83% and 0.17 p.p.), the result was influenced by gasoline (3.33% and 0.17 pp). In relation to other fuels (3.47%), ethanol (5.81%), vehicle gas (1.31%) and diesel fuel (0.85%) also showed increases. On the other hand, airfares recorded a drop in prices (-4.63% and -0.03 pp).

In Education (0.75%), regular courses rose 0.77% mainly due to the subitems higher education (1.13%) and primary education (0.57%). The increase in miscellaneous courses (0.47%) was mainly influenced by language courses (0.96%).

In the Housing group (0.18%), the main impact came from bottled gas (1.93% and 0.02 pp). Also noteworthy is the increase in water and sewage fees (0.13%), which is the result of the following tariff adjustments: an average reduction of -0.61% in São Paulo (-0.47%), starting on July 23; 5.81% in Salvador (2.71%), starting on August 1; and 8.05% in Fortaleza (2.68%), starting on August 5. The result of the piped gas subitem (0.17%) is the result of the 2.77% increase in Rio de Janeiro (1.27%), starting on August 1; and the change in the structure of consumption bands on bills in Curitiba (-1.72%).

Also in Housing, residential electricity went from 1.20% in July to -0.42% in August, with the return of the green tariff flag. In addition, the following adjustments were recorded: an average reduction of 2.43% in the tariffs of one of the energy concessionaires in São Paulo (-1.19%), starting on July 4; and a reduction of 2.75% in Belém (-1.44%), starting on August 7.

In the Food and Beverage group (-0.80%), food at home (-1.30%) showed a sharper drop than in July (-0.70%). This result was contributed to by the drops in tomatoes (-26.59%), carrots (-25.06%), potatoes (-13.13%) and onions (-11.22%). Among the subitems that rose, ground coffee stood out (3.66%).

Food away (0.49%) accelerated compared to July (0.25%), due to the sharpest increases in snacks (from 0.24% in July to 0.76% in August) and meals (0.23% in July to 0.37% in August).

As for regional indexes, eight areas saw increases in August. The largest change was observed in Recife (0.50%), due to the increase in gasoline prices (6.01%). The lowest result occurred in Salvador (-0.11%), which recorded a drop in the prices of tomatoes (-30.33%) and onions (-13.73%).

In orded to calculate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from July 16 to August 14, 2024 (reference) and compared with those in effect from June 15 to July 15, 2024 (base). The indicator refers to families with incomes between 1 and 40 minimum wages and covers the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, as well as Brasília and the city of Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as the IPCA, the difference lies in the period of price collection and the geographic scope.
