In June, retail sales drop 1.0%

In June 2024, retail sales volume fell by 1.0% compared to May, in the seasonally adjusted series. In the previous month, the change had been 0.9%. The quarterly moving average varied by 0.2% in the quarter ended in June.

In the non-adjusted series, retail trade rose 4.0% compared to June 2023, the 13th consecutive positive rate. The cumulative rate for the year reached 5.2%, while the cumulative index for the last 12 months was 3.6%.
In the extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction materials and wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, the volume of sales changed 0.4% in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average remained stable (0.0%). In the non-adjusted series, the extended retail grew 2.0%, accumulating an increase of 4.3% in the year compared to the same period in 2023 and 3.5% in 12 months.
Four of the eight activities decline compared to May
In June, Brazilian retail trade fell 1.0% compared to the previous month, after the growth recorded in May (0.9%). In terms of sectors, there was a balance between positive and negative rates, with half of the activities with positive and the other half, negative results: Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-2.1%), Other personal and household articles (-1.8%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (-0.9%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-0.3%) had negative results. Fuels and lubricants (0.6%), Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (1.2%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (1.8%) and Furniture and household appliances (2.6%) grew in the period.

In the context of the extended retail trade, the activity of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces grew 3.9% in June compared to May, while the Construction material sector grew 4.8%.
Six retail activities grow compared to June 2023
Compared to June 2023, six of the eight sectors investigated had positive results: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (15.1%), Other personal and household articles (7.6%), Furniture and household appliances (6.7%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (4.7%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.5%) and Textiles, apparel and footwear (0.1%).
Among neagtive results were Fuels and lubricants (-4.1%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-8.1%).
In extended retail trade, there was growth in two of the three complementary activities: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (7.0%) and Construction materials (3.9%). Conversely, Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco fell (-11.5%).

The Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles activity showed a 15.1% increase in sales compared to June 2023, the 16th consecutive month of growth. The year-on-year comparison for June 2024 was the third largest in the positive series of recent months, being lower only than the change in April (19.0%) and February (18.5%) of 2024. In addition, the sector made the second largest positive contribution to retail in June, adding 1.5 pp to the total of 4.0%. In the first half of 2024, the activity accumulated 14.0% growth, a similar result until May (13.8%), indicating stability in the pace of gains. In the last 12 months, the scenario is similar: 9.5% until May against 10.4% until June.
The group of Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry stores, sporting goods stores, toy stores, among others, showed, in the year-on-year indicator, an increase in sales (7.6%) for the fifth consecutive month: the last month to register a drop was January 2024 compared to January 2023 (-2.1%). In June, the sector exerted the third largest influence on the sum of retail contributions, adding 0.6 pp to the total of 4.0% of the year-on-year indicator. With this, the sector accumulates 7.7% in the first half of 2024, the same level of cumulative gains until May (7.7%). In relation to the cumulative index over the last 12 months, the result until June 2024 was the least intense among the negative results of a sequence of 25 months registering losses: -1.2%.
In the case of Furniture and household appliances, the sector showed a 6.7% increase in sales compared to June 2023, the third consecutive positive result when comparing the month against the same month of the previous year: 7.9% in April and 2.0% in May. In relation to the cumulative result in the year up to June, going from 1.7% up to May to 2.5% in the first half of 2024, the activity shows an acceleration in the growth rate. In terms of the cumulative result in the last 12 months, the scenario is stable: 2.0% up to May to 2.2% up to June 2024.
The Office, computer and communication equipment and material group showed a 4.7% increase in sales, compared to June 2023, reversing the negative rate recorded in May (-0.5%). In relation to the cumulative index in the year up to June, the result was positive (3.0%) compared to the same period in 2023, above the cumulative index up to May (2.7%). In terms of cumulative results over the last 12 months, the sector showed an increase in its growth rate from 2.8% up to May to 3.9% up to June.
The Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco sector, with the data input for June 2024, reached its second consecutive month of growth in the year-on-year indicator: 3.5% in sales in June 2024 compared to June 2023. In the last 23 months, only April 2024 saw a drop (-1.3%) in the month-on-month comparison. Also for this indicator, the activity exerted the greatest influence among all eight retail sectors: 1.9 pp of the 4.0% total growth. In the first half of 2024, the sector accumulated growth of 6.0%, below the accumulation level up to May (6.5%). In the 12-month period, the scenario is one of stable gains: 5.3% both up to May and up to June.
Meanwhile, Textiles, apparel and footwear showed stable sales in June 2024 compared to June 2023 (0.1%), after registering growth in May (2.0%). The first half of 2024 accumulated losses of 0.4% compared to the same period in 2023, a result equal to that found in the first five months of the year: -0.4%. In the last 12 months, the scenario also indicates losses: -1.1% up to May against -0.5% up to June.
The Fuels and lubricants sector registered a 4.1% drop in sales compared to June 2023, the second consecutive negative result in volume. In the year-on-year indicator, the activity was the only one to contribute negatively to the composition of sectoral contributions: -0.5 pp. In the first six months of 2024, the sector accumulated -1.9% losses compared to the same period in 2023, a more intense negative result than the cumulative result up to May (-1.4%). In the last 12 months, the activity also recorded losses: -2.3% up to May and -3.2% up to June.
The year-on-year result for Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery was negative by 8.1% in sales in June 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year. This was the second month in which the sector showed a reduction for this indicator: -9.0% in May 2024. Over the last 17 months, the only month to record a positive change was April (2.4%). In the semester, the cumulative loss was 7.6%, at the same level as the cumulative result up to May (-7.5%). In the last 12 months, the result was -8.7% until June, 0.5 pp lower than the result until May 2024 (-8.3%).
In the extended retail, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces grew 7.0% in sales compared to June 2023, maintaining the positive trend recorded in the previous 13 months. The sector contributed 1.3 pp to the 2.0% change in extended retail in June 2024, the second largest, among the positive results, among the 11 activities surveyed. In the year, the sector accumulated 12.2% in relation to the same period of the previous year, a result lower than that accumulated until May (13.4%). In terms of cumulative result in the last 12 months, going from 12.4% until May to 11.5% until June, the sector also showed a slowdown in growth intensity.
The year-on-year result for Construction Materials was positive at 3.9%, reversing a negative result in May. In recent months, the trend of the year-on-year indicator in volume of activity has experienced frequent sign reversals: +5.0% in February; -9.5% in March; 16.6% in April; -1.3% in May; and 3.9% in sales in June compared to June 2023. In the year, the sector has accumulated 2.0% growth, above the level of gains recorded until May (1.7%). In the last 12 months, there was an increase in losses for the third consecutive month: 0.3% until April, 0.4% until May and 0.9% until June.
The Wholesale sector specialized in food, beverage and tobacco products had its fourth consecutive month of decline in the year-on-year comparison: -22.6% in March; -12.6% in April; -8.0% in May; and -11.5% in June. The sector exerted the main influence on the negative field for the calculation of extended retail, adding -2.3 pp to the total of +2.0%. As a result, the first half of 2024 has accumulated losses of 6.5%, more intense than the result until May (-5.5%). In the last 12 months, the cumulative result up to June represented a reversal in the gain trend, which is now negative: -0.9%.
Retail trade grows 5.2% in the first half of 2024
In the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, retail trade accumulated growth of 5.2%, the fifth positive rate after a result of -3.0% in the second half of 2021. The extended retail, in turn, showed growth for the third consecutive period: -1.4% in the 2nd half of 2022; 2.2% in the 1st half of 2023; 2.6% in the 2nd half of 2023; and 4.3% in the first half of 2024.
In the analysis by sector, the first half of 2024, compared to the same half of the previous year, registered growth in five retail trade activities: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (14.0%); Other personal and household articles (7.7%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (6.0%); Office, computer and communication material and equipment (3.0%); and Furniture and household appliances (2.5%). On the other hand, three sectors closed the semester with negative results: Textiles, apparel and footwear (-0.4%); Fuels and lubricants (-1.9%); and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-7.6%). Regarding the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces closed the first half of 2024 positively (12.2%), Construction materials showed an increase (2.0%) and Specialized wholesale specialized of food products, beverages and tobacco fell (-6.5%).
Compared to May, sales fall in 20 states in June
In the transition from May to June 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail trade had a predominance of negative results, 20 of the 27 states, with a highlight to: Amapá (-8.7%), Bahia (-2.8%) and Tocantins (-2.7%). On the other hand, 7 of the 27 states showed positive pressure, with a highlight to: Paraíba (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.8%) and Rondônia (1.0%).
In the extended retail trade, the change between May and June 2024 had positive results in 15 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Rio Grande do Sul (13.8%), Mato Grosso do Sul (4.8%) and Paraíba (4.5%). On the other hand, 11 of the 27 Federation Units were under negative pressure, with highlights to: Amapá (-9.4%), Tocantins (-4.1%) and Acre (-2.7%). Sergipe remained stable (0.0%) in the month-on-month indicator.
Compared to 2023, sales increase in 25 Federation Units
Compared to June 2023, the change in retail sales in the current month had predominantly positive results in 25 of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights for: Paraíba (16.4%), Amapá (13.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (11.0%). On the other hand, 2 of the 27 states are experiencing negative pressure: Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and Espírito Santo (-1.8%).
In the e;xtended retail trade, the change between June 2024 and June 2023 also showed a predominance of positive results, in 21 of the 27 states, with a highlight to: Paraíba (12.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.5%) and Goiás (11.3%). On the other hand, 6 of the 27 states are experiencing negative pressure, with a highlight to: Pará (-8.3%), Tocantins (-3.7%) and Mato Grosso (-3.1%).
