Agricultural storage capacity grows 4.7%, hits 210.9 million tonnes in 2nd semester of 2023

The available storage capacity in Brazil was of 210.9 million tonnes in the second semester of 2023, 4.7% above the first semester of 2023. The number of establishments rose 4.8%, involving 418 new ones, hitting a total of 9,102 establishments.
The stock of agricultural products added up to 44.6 million tonnes, a rise of 13.2% over 39.4 million tonnes of December 31, 2022.
In the second semester of 2023, all the regions increased the number of establishments: North (3.1%), Northeast (2.3%), Southeast (1.4%), South (5.1%) and Central-West (6.7%). Rio Grande do Sul has the highest number of storage establishments (2,387), followed by Mato Grosso (1,621), which has the largest storage capacity in Brazil (55.5 million tonnes) and Paraná (1,369 establishments). Together, the three states accounted for 60% of the total capacity in Brazil.
Concerning the five major agricultural products existing in the storage facilities on December 31, 2023, the stock of corn represented the largest volume (21.0 million tonnes), an increase of 15.8% in relation to December 31, 2022. This volume of corn represented 47.1% of the products surveyed. It was followed by the stock of soybeans (11.3 million), which grew 39.6%, corresponding to 25.4% of the total stock. With a stock of 6.4 million tonnes (14.4% of the total), the stock of wheat dropped 13.3%.
Silo capacity rises 4.6%
In terms of storage capacity, silos prevailed in Brazil, having reached 110.0 million tonnes in the second semester of 2023, which represented 52.2% of the total capacity. Silos prevailed in the South Region, being responsible for 64.6% of the storage capacity of the region and for 46.2% of the total silo capacity in Brazil. Silos increased their capacity by 4.6% in relation to the first semester of 2023.
They were followed by automated and bulk warehouses, which hit 77.8 million tonnes of storage capacity, 6.3% larger than that reported in the previous period. They were more intense in Central-West, with 51.6% of the regional capacity and 58.4% of the total capacity. This type of storage was responsible for 36.9% of the national storage.
Conventional, temporary and inflatable warehouses added up to 23.1 million tonnes, which represented an increase of 0.2% over the first semester of 2023. These warehouses prevailed in the South Region (33.8%), followed by the Southeast Region (31.7%), and contributed with 10.9% of the total storage capacity.
All the Major Regions increased the number of establishments
With 9,102 active establishments in the second semester of 2023, the Survey of Stocks unveiled an increase of 4.8% in the number of active establishments when compared with the first semester of 2023. In the ranking of the number of establishments and capacity, Rio Grande do Sul stood in the first position, with 2,387 storage units, followed by Mato Grosso, with 1,621 and Paraná, with 1,369 units. Together, the three states accounted for 60% of the total capacity in Brazil. Mato Grosso had the largest storage capacity in Brazil, with 55.5 million tonnes. Of this total, 58.9% were bulk warehouses and 35.9%, silos. Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná had 37.7 and 34.1 million tonnes of capacity, respectively, and silos prevailed in these states.
Stocks of corn and soybeans increase 15.8% and 39.6%, respectively, whereas that of wheat drops 13.3%
The stock of corn added up to 21.0 million tonnes, a rise of 15.8%, whereas the stock of soybeans added up to 11.3 million tonnes, an increase of 39.6% over December 31, 2022. On the other hand, the stock of wheat added up to 6.4 million tonnes, 13.3% smaller than that in the same date of 2022. The stock of products was directly related to the 2023 harvest, a record in the production of soybeans and corn. As a result, it led to a larger stock, as well as to the drop in the output of wheat, due to climate problems.
These products, together with rice (1.5 million tonnes) and coffee (1.1 million), comprised 92.7% of the total stocked among the products monitored by this survey, being the remaining 7.3% composed of cotton, black beans, colored beans and other grains and seeds.
