Volume of services advances 0.5% in April

In the seasonally-adjusted series. volume of services in Brazil expanded 0.5% in April 2024 over March. registering the second consecutive positive figure. a period in which it accumulated a gain of 1.2%.

As a result, the services sector was 12.9% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 0.7% below that of December 2022 (peak of the time series).
In the non-adjusted series, volume of services registered an expansion of 5.6% in April 2024 against April 2023, after retreating 2.2% in March.
In the cumulative indicator over the first four-month period of 2024, volume of services expanded 2.3% against the same period in 2023.
On the other hand, the cumulative index in the last 12 months gained dynamism by changing from 1.4% in March to 1.6% in April 2024.

The expansion in volume of services (0.5%) registered between March and April 2024 was followed by three out of five dissemination activities investigated, highlighted by the advances coming from transportation (1.7%) and other services (5.0%), both of them growing for the second consecutive month and accumulating gains of 2.5% and 5.3%, respectively. The other advance stood with information and communication (0.4%), which repeated the peak of the time series in April 2024.
On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%) and services rendered to families (-1.8%) retreated this month, after advancing in March.
Still in the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the index of the quarterly moving average for the total volume of services showed a slight positive change (0.1%) in the quarter ended in April 2024 over the level of the previous month.
Among the sectors, positive rates prevailed, since four out of five sectors investigated also expanded: other services (1.5%), information and communication (0.8%), transportation (0.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.3%). The sector of services rendered to families (-0.4%) registered the only retreat in this type of indicator.
Compared with April 2023, volume of the services sector expanded 5.6% in April 2024, after retreating in March (-2.2%). The advance this month was followed by all five dissemination activities and also counted with the growth in only 66.9% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, information and communication (7.7%) exerted the major positive impact. The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (6.0%), transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (3.4%), other services (10.2%) and services rendered to families (3.1%).
As for the cumulative index in the first tfour-month period of 2024, against the same period a year ago, the services sector expanded 2.3%, with positive rates in four out five dissemination activities and an increase in 57.2% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, the most important positive contribution came from the sector of information and communication (5.7%). The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (3.7%), services rendered to families (4.9%) and other services (3.5%).
In contrast, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-1.8%) exerted the only negative influence.
In regional terms, 20 FUs expanded in volume of services in April
In regional terms, most (20) of the 27 Federation Units (FUs) expanded in volume of services in April 2024, compared with March 2024.
Among the places that reported positive rates this month, the most important impacts came from São Paulo (0.6%) and Minas Gerais (3.2%), followed by Bahia (5.7%) and the Federal District (5.4%). In contrast, Rio de Janeiro (-0.7%), Tocantins (-22.5%) and Paraná (-1.0%) exerted the biggest negative influences.
Compared with April 2023, the expansion in volume of services in Brazil (5.6%) was followed by 23 out of 27 FUs. The most important positive contribution came from São Paulo (5.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (9.0%), Rio de Janeiro (4.8%), Paraná (7.1%) and Santa Catarina (9.4%). In contrast, Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%) led the losses this month, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (-5.4%) and Tocantins (-8.1%).
The cumulative index in the first four-month period of 2024, against the same period a year ago, shows that the advance in volume of services in Brazil (2.3%) was spread over the places surveyed, since 21 out of 27 FUs also expanded in real services revenue. The major positive impacts in regional terms occurred in São Paulo (1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%) and Minas Gerais (5.6%), followed by Paraná (5.6%), Santa Catarina (6.7%) and the Federal district (4.6%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-1.7%), Mato Grosso (-4.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-4.3%) recorded the most important negative influences on the national index.
Tourism activities grow 2.3% in April
In April 2024, the index of tourism activities expanded 2.3% over the immediately previous month, the second consecutive positive figure, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 2.4%. As a result, the tourism segment was 4.7% above the level of February 2020 and 3.0% below the peak of the time series, hit in February 2014.
In regional terms, ten out of 12 places surveyed followed the expansion recorded by the national tourism activity. The most relevant positive contribution came from São Paulo (3.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (4.9%), Federal District (4.4%) and Paraná (2.9%).. In contrast, Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) reported the only retreats.
In the April 2023/April 2023 comparison, the index of volume of tourism activities in Brazil expanded 4.5%, the 37th consecutive positive rate, mainly leveraged by the increase in the revenue of enterprises that work in the sectors of air transportation of passengers, catering services, hotels, car rental and travel agencies.
In regional terms, eight out of 12 FUs where the indicator is investigated advanced in tourism services, highlighted by Bahia (30.0%) and Minas Gerais (15.3%), followed by São Paulo (2.3%) and Paraná (11.3%). In contrast, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.9%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-1.8%) and Espírito Santo (-9.7%), exerted the major negative impacts this month.
Considering the cumulative index in the first four-month period of 2024, the special aggregate of tourism activities recorded an increase of 1.4% against the same period a year ago, mainly due to revenue increases in companies in the sectors of restaurants; catering services; hotels; air transportation of passengers; theater and musicals; and travel agencies.
In regional terms, six out of 12 places investigated also recorded positive rates, highlighting the gains coming from Minas Gerais (9.1%) and Bahia (12.0%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (3.1%) and Paraná (5.3%). Conversely, Rio Grande do Sul (-4.6%), Federal District (-5.4%), Espírito Santo (-11.0%) and Goiás (-7.8%) registered the most important negative impacts on the cumulative index in the year of tourism.
Passenger and cargo transportation grow in April
In April 2024, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil grew 10.2% over the immediately previous month. As a result, the segment was 3.2% above the level in February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 20.5% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series). Compared with April 2023, it expanded 9.9% in April 2024, after recording five negative figures in a row. The cumulative index in the first four-month period of the year retracted 3.0% over the same period in 2023.
On its turn, cargo transportation positively changed 0.2% in April 2024. As a result, the segment was 6.3% below the peak of the time series (July 2023). Concerning the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 34.1% above that of February 2020. Compared with April 2023, it grew 3.4%, after retreating 8.2% in March. In the cumulative index in the first four-month period of the year, cargo transportation advanced 1.1%.
