Volume of Services increases 0.4% in March

In March 2024, the volume of services in Brazil expanded by 0.4% compared to February, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having decreased by 0.9% last February.

Thus, the services sector is 12.1% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 1.5% below December 2022 (the highest point in the time series).
In the non-adjusted series, compared to March 2023, there was a 2.3% drop in the volume of services, after two positive results in a row.
In the cumulative indicator for the first quarter of 2024, the volume of services showed an expansion of 1.2% compared to the same period in 2023.
The cumulative result for the last 12 months showed a loss of dynamism, going from 2.2% in February to 1.4% in March 2024, thus maintaining the downward trend seen since October 2022 (9.0%).

The expansion in the volume of services (0.4%), observed from February to March 2024, was followed in four of the five dissemination activities investigated, with a highlight to advances coming from information and communication services (4.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (3.8%), thus recovering the losses observed in February: -2.5% and -2.1%, respectively.
The other advances came from transportation (0.3%); and services rendered to families (0.6%), with the first sector recovering a small part of the loss accumulated in the last two months (-1.0%); and the second registering an increase of 0.8% in the period of February-March 2024, after recording a setback of 2.8% last January.
In turn, other services (0.0%) showed stability in March after falling 1.0% in February.
Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the total volume of services showed stability (0.0%) in the quarter ended in March 2024 compared to the level of the previous month. Among the sectors, there was a predominance of negative rates, with services rendered to families (-0.7%); other services (-0.8%); and transportation (-0.2%) showing a decline; while information and communication (1.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.9%) recorded growth.
Compared to March 2023, the volume of the services sector decreased by 2.3% in March 2024, after recording two positive results in a row. This month's decline was spread in two of the five dissemination activities and also saw growth in just 41.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (-10.4%) had the main negative impact. The other decline came from other services (-2.0%).
Conversely, the main positive result came from the information and communication sector (4.3%). The other advances came from services rendered to families (7.2%); and professional, administrative and complementary services (1.3%).
In the cumulative index in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, the services sector expanded by 1.2%, with four of the five dissemination activities showing positive rates and growth of 54.8% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, the most important positive contribution came from the information and communication sector (5.5%). The other advances came from professionals, administrative and complementary services (2.9%); of those rendered to families (5.5%); and other services (1.5%).
On the other hand, transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (-3.5%) exerted the only negative influence.
Among the Federation Units, 13 advanced and 14 retreated in March
Regionally, the smallest part (13) of the 27 Federation Units (FU) registered an expansion in the volume of services in March 2024, compared to February 2024.
Among the places that recorded positive rates this month, the most important impact came from São Paulo (1.1%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (1.1%), Minas Gerais (1.2%) and Espírito Santo (5 ,1%).
On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%), followed by Mato Grosso (-7.6%), Federal District (-4.0%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-9.7%) exerted the main negative influences of the month.
In comparison with March 2023, the decline in the volume of services in Brazil was followed by 22 of the 27 UFs. The most important negative influence came from São Paulo (-3.2%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-7.2%), Mato Grosso (-14.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-16.4 %), Goiás (-6.3%) and Ceará (-6.8%). Conversely, Rio de Janeiro (3.0%) and Minas Gerais (2.2%) led the month's gains.
In the cumulative result in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, the increase in the volume of services in Brazil was widespread among the areas investigated, as 19 of the 27 FUs also showed an expansion in the real revenue from services. The main positive impacts in regional terms occurred in Rio de Janeiro (4.0%) and Minas Gerais (4.4%), followed by Paraná (4.6%), Santa Catarina (5.5%) and Federal District (9.0%).
On the other hand, São Paulo (-0.3%), followed by Mato Grosso (-5.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.8%) and Goiás (-1.9%) registered the most important negative influences.
In March, tourism activities changed 0.2%
In March 2024, the index of tourism activity showed a positive change of 0.2% compared to February 2024, after having declined in the previous two months, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 1.9%.
As a result, the tourism segment is 2.3% above the level of February 2020 and 5.3% below the highest point in the series, reached in February 2014.
Regionally, five of the 12 areas surveyed followed this expansion movement. The most relevant positive contribution came from Bahia (9.8%), followed by Santa Catarina (4.5%) and Paraná (2.6%). Conversely, São Paulo (-1.6%), followed by Federal District (-6.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.8%) recorded the main declines in regional terms.
In the comparison of March 2024 against March 2023, the volume index of tourism activities in Brazil showed a positive change of 0.5%, the 36th positive rate in a row.
In regional terms, six of the 12 UFs where the indicator is investigated showed progress, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (7.3%) and Bahia (16.9%), followed by Minas Gerais (3.7%) and Santa Catarina (8.8%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.7%), followed by the Federal District (-8.5%) and Espírito Santo (-12.5%) had the main negative impacts of the month.
In the cumulative indicator for the first quarter of 2024, the special aggregate of tourism activities showed an expansion of 0.4% compared to the same period last year.
Regionally, six of the 12 areas investigated also recorded positive rates, with gains coming from Rio de Janeiro (4.8%) and Minas Gerais (7.0%), followed by Bahia (7.3%) and Pernambuco ( 4.4%). Conversely, São Paulo (-0.8%) and Federal District (-7.8%) recorded the most important negative impacts in the cumulative rate in the year in tourism, followed by Goiás (-8.8%) and Espírito Santo ( -11.1%).
Passenger transportation and cargo transportation decline in March
In March 2024, the volume of passenger transportation in Brazil recorded a decline of 1.8% compared to the previous month, the second negative result in a row, a period in which it showed a cumulative loss of 1.9%. Therefore, in this reference month, the segment is 5.6% below the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 27.7% below February 2014 (the highest point in the time series). In comparison with March 2023, there was a drop of 9.6%, the fifth consecutive setback. In the cumulative index of the first quarter of the year, there was a decline of 7.0% compared to the same period in 2023.
In turn, the volume of cargo transportation recorded a negative change of 0.2% in March 2024, after also decreasing 1.6% in the previous month. Therefore, the segment is 7.1% below the highest point in its series (July 2023). In relation to the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 33.5% above February 2020. In comparison with March 2023, there was a retraction of 8.2%, thus interrupting 42 positive results in a row. In the first quarter of the year, it increased 0.3% in the same interval investigated.
