The unemployment rate (7.4%) in the quarter ended December 2023 dropped by 0.3 percentage points (p.p.) from the quarter July-September 2023 (7.7%) and fell by 0.5 p.p. against the same quarter in 2022 (7.9%). That was the lowest rate since the quarter ended January 2015, and the lowest for a quarter ended December since 2014.

Theunemployed population (8.1 million) dropped by 2.8% (by 234 thousan persons) in the quarter and by 5.7% (490 thousand) in the year. That was the highest figure since the quarter ended March 2015.

The employed population (101.0 million) hit a new record in the stime series that started in 2012, with an increase of 1.1% in the quarter (1.1 million more) and 1.6% (1.6 million more) in the year. The employment population ratio (percentage of employed persons in the population at working age) hit 57.6%, the highest since the quarter ended February 2015, having increased by 0.5 p.p. in the quarter and 0.4 p.p. in the year.

The compound underutilization rate (17.3%), dropped by 0.3 p.p. from the quarter ended September (17.6%) and dropped by 1.2 p.p. against the same quarter in 2022 (18.5%). That was the lowest rate since the quarter ended June 2015 (17.3%).

The underutilized population (19.9 million persons) stood stable in the quarter and dropped by 6.4% in the year, when it reached 21.3 million. It was the lowest figure since the quarter ended January 2016.

Thetime-related underemployed population (5.4 million) was stable in both comparisons.

The population out of the workforce (66.3 million) decreased by 0.8% (by 543 thousand persons) against the previous quarter and was stable from the same quarter in 2022.

The discouraged population (3.5 million) was stable against the previous quarter and fell by 13.6% (542 thousand persons) in the year.

Thepercentage of discouraged persons in the workforce or discouraged population (3.1%) was stable against the previous quarter and fell by 0.5 p.p. in the year (3.6%).

The number ofemployed persons with a formal employment contract in the private sector (excluding domestic workers) reached 37,973 million, a record in the series initiated in 2012, with an increase of 1.6% (612 thousand more) in the quarter and 3.0% (1.1 million more) in the year.

The number of workers without a formal contract in the private sector (13.5 million) was stable in the quarter and in the year, and so was the number of self-employed workers (25.6 million), of employers(4.2 million) and of workers in the public sector (12.2 million)/big>

The number of domestic workers (6.0 million) increased by 3.8% (223 thousand persons) against the previous quarter and increased by 3.5% (204 thousand persons) in the annual comparison.

The informality rate reached 39.1% (or 39.5 million informal workers) a result similar to that in the quarter ended September and exceeded the same quarter in 2022 (38.8%).

The usual real earnings (R$ 3,032) did not record a significant change in the quarterly comparison and increased 3.1% in the year.

The usual real wage bill (R$ 301.6 billion) reached a new reocrd in the time series, with an increase of 2.1% from the previous quarter and of 5.0% in the annual comparison.

No trimestre móvel de outubro a dezembro de 2023, a força de trabalho (pessoas ocupadas e desocupadas) foi estimada em 109,1 milhões de pessoas, crescendo 0,8% (mais 912 mil) frente ao trimestre de julho a setembro de 2023 e expansão de 1,0% (mais 1,1 milhão de pessoas) no ano.

Frente ao trimestre de julho a setembro de 2023, houve aumento no número de ocupados nos seguintes grupamentos de atividade: Indústria Geral (2,5%, ou mais 322 mil pessoas), Construção (2,7%, ou mais 198 mil pessoas), Transporte, armazenagem e correio (4,3%, ou mais 237 mil pessoas), Outros serviços (5,8%, ou mais 302 mil pessoas) e Serviços domésticos (3,9%, ou mais 228 mil pessoas). Houve redução no grupamento de Agricultura, pecuária, produção florestal, pesca e aquicultura (-4,8%, ou menos 403 mil pessoas).

Frente ao trimestre de outubro a dezembro de 2022, houve alta em: Transporte, armazenagem e correio (6,7%, ou mais 359 mil pessoas), Informação, Comunicação e Atividades Financeiras, Imobiliárias, Profissionais e Administrativas (5,4%, ou mais 645 mil pessoas), Administração pública, defesa, seguridade social, educação, saúde humana e serviços sociais (2,6%, ou mais 455 mil pessoas) e Serviços domésticos (3,5%, ou mais 206 mil pessoas). Houve redução no grupamento de Agricultura, pecuária, produção florestal, pesca e aquicultura (-5,9%, ou menos 502 mil pessoas).

Quanto ao rendimento médio real habitual (R$ 3.032), frente ao trimestre móvel anterior, houve aumento no grupamento Administração pública, defesa, seguridade social, educação, saúde humana e serviços sociais (2,0%, ou mais R$ 84). Os demais grupamentos não apresentaram variação significativa.

Frente ao mesmo trimestre de 2022, houve aumento nas categorias: Indústria (5,7%, ou mais R$ 160), Comércio, reparação de veículos automotores e motocicletas (5,7%, ou mais R$ 136) e Administração pública, defesa, seguridade social, educação, saúde humana e serviços sociais (3,4%, ou mais R$ 140). Os demais grupamentos não apresentaram variação significativa.

Todas as posições na ocupação, em relação ao trimestre anterior, apresentaram estabilidade quanto ao rendimento médio real habitual. Já frente ao mesmo período de 2022, houve aumento nas seguintes posições na ocupação: Empregado com carteira de trabalho assinada (2,5%, ou mais R$ 70), Empregado sem carteira de trabalho assinada (8,1%, ou mais R$ 157), Empregado no setor público (inclusive servidor estatutário e militar) (3,3%, ou mais R$ 147) e Empregador (7,8%, ou mais R$ 547).
