In November, retail trade sales changed by 0.1%

In November 2023, volume of sales of retail trade changed by 0.1% from October, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average was also 0.1% in November.

From November 2022, the volume of sales of retail trade increased by 2.2%, the sixth consecutive positive result. The cumulative index in the year reached 1.7% and the cumulative index in the last 12 months, 1.5%.

As for extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales changed by 1.3% in November. The moving average was 0.4%. The cumulative index in the year was 2.6% and the cumulative index in 12 months, 2.3%.

The marginal change of 0.1% in November represents stability for the second consecutive month, since in October the indicator was -0.3% and in September, 0.6%. It is worth pointing out that, considering the last six months, the positive results of July (0.8%) and September (0.6%) were the only ones with changes out of the range -0.5% to +0.5% (in June 0.2% and August it had been -0.1%).

On the other hand, the period from August to November registers an increase in level of the seasonally-adjusted series, of 1.2% from May. As a result, the Brazilian retail was, in November, 1.9% below the record level of the time series, of November 2020.

Six of the eight activities recorded positive results, in the seasonally-adjusted series

This change of 0.1% in volume of sales of retail trade from October to November 2023 resulted in positive rates in six of the eight activities surveyed: Office, computer and communication equipment and material (18.6%), Furniture and household appliances (4.5%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (3.0%), Fuels and lubricants (1.0%), Other personal and household articles (1.0%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.1%). On the other hand, between October and November 2023, two of the eight grouos surveyed recorded decreases: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.5%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (-1.6%).

Extended retail trade, in the seasonally-adjusted series, recorded two positive results: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, with 4.0% and Construction material, with 0.4%.

Five retail activities advanced from November 2022

From November 2022, five sectors of retail recorded positive results:  Office, computer and communication equipment and material (18.1%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (6.1%), Furniture and household applainces (5.2%), Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (5.0%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic  articles and toiletries (4.1%).  Three activities recorded drops:  Other personal and household articles (-5.9%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.3%) and Fuels and lubricants (-1.7%).

As for extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded 16.9%, Construction material grew by 1.1% and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 10.2% from November 2022.

The group Office, computer and communication equipment and material recorded an increase of 18.1% in November 2023agaist the same month a year ago, the biggest positive change among all the sectors and the first positive result after a dro of 6.4% from September to October. In the year, the sector had a cumulative increase of 2.2%. The cumulative index in the last 12 months increased by 2.0%.

The sector Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear increased by 6.1 from November 2022, firat positive result after three months with drops (-6.9% in August, -2.7% in September and -3.0% in October). As for the interannual indicator, from the ten months in 2023, only three recorded positive results: January, with 2.4%, July, with 1.3% against the same month a year ago and November, as previously mentioned. In the year, cumulative indexes in the sector are negative, but the rates have increased: -7.5% up to August, -7.0% up to September, -6.6% up to October and -5.4% up to November. The same is ttrue for the cumulative index in 12 months: -9.7% up to August, -9.3% up to September, -8.3% up to October and -6.4% up to November.

The group Furniture and household appliances increased by 5.2% from November 2022, after a change of -0.4% in comparison between October 2023 with the same month a year ago. The cumulative indicator in the year up to November 2023 recorded increases of 1.5%, a level above that cumulative in the year until the previous months (up to August the cumulative figure was 1.0%, up to September, 1.1% and up to October, 1.0%). For the last 12 months up to November, the result was 1.4%, for the fourth consecutive month of increase (-0.3% up to july, 0.4% up to August, 1.0% up to September and 1.1% up to October).

The activity Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded increase for the sixteenth consecutive month of the interannual indicator: 5.0% in November, above the previous result: 1.9% in the comparison between October 2023 and October 2022. In the year, the cumulative increase is 3.5% up to November, stable for more than three months, 3.5% up to September and 3.3% up to October. In the last 12 months, there was cumulative increase up to november (3.4%).

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries increased by 4.1% in sales against November 2022, ninth positive result with increase (the last month to record a negative change in the interannual base was February: -0.5%). As for the cumulative index, increase was stable, since the results up to October and November are the same: 4.3%. In the last 12 months, the result of 4.0% up to November 2023 surpassed by 0.2 p.p. the cumulative index up to October.

The group of Other personal and household articles, which encompasses department stores, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, among others, fell by 5.9% in sales from November 2022, the main decrease among the sectors recording drops. There were 19 months with consecutive negative results (the last month to record an increase was April 2022: 1.1%).

The sector has faced the accounting crisis of major retail companies, and that affects revenue and reuces the number of physical shops in the country. In the year, the cumulative decreases, up to November, amount tp 10.7%, whereas the last 12 months also recorded negative results: -10.4%.

The sector of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery recorded -5.3% in sales from November 2022, against -4.7% in October 2023 from October 2022. Ten consecutive months recorded drops in this indicator. As for the cumulative index up to November, the drops were as high as those up to September and October: -4.1% in September and october and -4.2% up to November. In terms of the cumulative result in the last 12 months, there were also losses: -3.3% up to October to -3,7% up to November 2023.

Fuels and lubricants recorded a negative result of 1.7% in sales of November 2023 against November 2022, firth consecutive decrease, and the lowest of them, in the interannual comparison (-2.3% in July, -3.4% in August, -8.5% in September and -9.3% in October). It should be noted that the upward trend of the activity as for the volume indicator in the second half of 2022 was associated to a price reduction policy for gasoline, initiated July 2022, making the base of comparison high.

The cumulative index changed from 4.9% up to October to 4.3% up to November, thus reducing the pace of increase. The same was true regarding the cumulative index in 12 months, which, having changed from 7.9% up to October to 5.7% up to November, decelerated in this case.

As for extended retail, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded an increase of 16.9% in sales from November 2022, the seventh consecutive increase and the ninth in the period to record two-digit changes (1.5% in May, 17.8% in June, 9.8% in July, 11.0% in August, 9.1% in September and 10.6% in October).

The cumulative index in the year records increases in all the months of 2023, having accelerated in the secnd semester: 6.0% in July, 6.7% in August, 7.0% in September, 7.3% in October and 8.2% in November). The cumulative index in the last 12 months has been positive for six months: 0.6% in June, 2.2% ein July, 3.6% in August, 4.4% in September, 5.4% in October and 7.3% November.

Construction material increased by 1.1% from November 2022, second consecutive increae after 8 months recording negative results in the interannual indincator. Cumulative losses in the year recorded decrease: -2.1% up to October verus -1.8% up to November. As for the cumulative index of the last 12 months, the result has been negative for 21 months, with -2.3% up to November.

Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, against the same month a year ago, recorded an increase of 10.2% in November, as for volume of sales, fourth consecutive result in this indicator. As for the cumulative index in the year, there has been acceleration of increases, with 0.9% up to November versus 0.0% up to October.

Sales increase in 12 Federation Units from October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, retail trade changed by 0.1% with positive figures in 12 of the 27 Federation Units,the main ones being: Espírito Santo (13.3%), Paraíba (1.8%) and Amapá (1.6%). On the other hand, 13 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by Bahia (-5.3%), Goiás (-3.8%) and Acre (-3.6%). Alagoas and Roraima recorded stability (0.0%).

In the same comparison, for extended retail trade, the change between October and November 2023 was 1.3%, with positive results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlight being: Espírito Santo (5.1%), Maranhão (2.7%) and Federal District (2.6%). On the other hand, negative results were recorded by 4 of the 27 Federation Units, the main ones being Pará (-1.2%), Rondônia (0.8%) and Bahia (-0.3%).

Sales rise in 18 out of 27 Federation Units in the annual comparison

From November 2022, the change of retail trade sales in November was 2.2%, with positive results in 18 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Espírito Santo (12.4%), Maranhão (11.7%) and Ceará (8.0%). On the other hand, with negative rates there were 9 of the 27 Federation Units, among wihch stood out the Paraíba (-5.2%), Roraima (-5.2%) and the Federal District (-4.7%).

As for extended retail trade, the interannual indicator changed by 4.3%, with positive figures in 19 out of 27 Federation Units, the main ones being: Maranhão (17.0%), Espírito Santo (15.7%) and Ceará (12.4%). On the other hand, eight of the 27 Federation Units accounted for negative results, with a highlight to Mato Grosso do Sul (-11.5%), Roraima (10.0%) and Paraíba (-9.2%).
