Volume dos Services drops by 0.6% in October

In October 2023, volume of services in Brazil decreased by 0.6% from September, in the seasonally-adjusted series. That is the third consecutive negative result for the indicator, with a cumulative decrease of 2.3%. The services sector was 10.2% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 3.2% below the figure in December 2022 (peak of the time series).

In the seasonally adjusted series, against October 2022, volume of services decreased by 0.4%. The cumulative index in the year increased by 3.1% against the same period in 2022. The cumulative index in 12 months, which went from 4.4% in September to 3.6% in October 2023, decelerated and recorded the lowest result since July 2021 (2.9%).

Retreat of volume of services (-0.6%), from September to October 2023, was observed in two of the five activities surveyed: transportation (-2.0%) and services rendered to families (-2.1%), with the former recording a decrease of 4.3% between August and October; and the last one making up for almost all the gain in September (2.5%)..

On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (1.0%) and information and communication services (0.3%) recorded the only increases in the month. The former activity recovered almost entirely from the retraction observed in September (-1.1%) and the latter recorded a slight increased after a sequence of three negative results in a row, with a cumulative drop of 1.6%. Finally, other services (0.0%) recorded stability in the month, after a decrease of 2.0% in the period August-September.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average was -0.8% in the quarter ended October from the level in the previous month. Among the sectors, also compared to the marginal movement of the index, there was dissemination of negative rates, since four of the five activities surveyed dropped from the level in the quarter ended September: transportation (-1.4%); services rendered to families (-1.1%); other services (-0.7%); and information and communication (-0.4%), while professional, administrative and complementary services (0.3%) accounted for the only positive result.

Against October 2022, volume of the services sector, having dropped by 0.4% in October 2023, recorded the second consecutive decrease. This month’s result was marked by decreases in in three of the five dissemination activities and also recorded increases in 56.0% of the 166 types of services surveyed. Among the sectors, other services (-4.2%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-1.2%) accounted for the main negative impacts, mainly due to the decrease in revenue from support service activities; support to financial services; security, insurance and social security brokers; fund management agreement or commission; administration of organized exchanges and of OTC markets, in the former sector; and management of ports and terminals; mass road transport; maritime and port support navigation and mailing, in the latter.

Information and communication (-0.5%), also recorded a decrease, mainly due to the lower revenue fom technical support, maintenance and other services in information technology; portals, Internet providers and other information services on the Internet; satellite TV operators; and broadcast TV.

On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (3.9%) and services rendered to families (0.1%) accounted for the only positive contributions to total volume of services, driven by the increase in revenue from companies in the sectors of car rental; consulting in business management; engineering services; travel agencies; administration of discount cards and loyalty programs; and location of means of transportation (except cars), in the former sector; and catering services and hotels, in the latter.

the increased revenue in: telecommunications, software development and licensing, data treatment, providers of application services and services of Internet hosting, in the second one; consulting in information technology; and development of computer programs on demand, in the first sector; car rental; engineering services; cadastral information and charges; travel agencies; and business intermediation activities, in the second; and hotels; catering services; and physical conditioning activities, in the third one.

The only negative influence on the cumulative index in the year came from other services (-1.2%), due to the lower revenue from auxiliary financial services; security brokers; and administration of organized exchanges and of OTC markets.

Services retreat in 12 of the 27 Federation Units in October

There were drops in 12 of the 27 Federation Units in October 2023 from September. Among the areas with negative rates in the month, the main negative impact came from Rio de Janeiro (-2.9%), followed by Mato Grosso (-7.0%) and Paraná (-2.1%). On the other hand, São Paulo (0.4%), followed by Minas Gerais (1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%) and Federal District (2.5%) accounted for the main positive contributions this month.

From October 2022, there were drops in volume of services in only 5 of the 27 Federation Units. São Paulo (-6.1%) accounted for the main negative contribution. Minas Gerais (7.3%), and Paraná (9.6%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (2.4%%), Rio Grande do Sul (35.8%) and Bahia (5.5%) and Bahia (5.9%) accounted for the main increases.

As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the advance in volume of services in Brazil (3.1%) was widespread over the places surveyed, since 25 of the 27 Federation Units also recorded increases in real services revenue. The main positive impacts were those of Minas Gerais (8.3%), Paraná (11.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.9%), followed by Mato Grosso (16.9%), Santa Catarina (8.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (5.9%). The only negative contributions came from São Paulo (-1.3%) and Amapá (-3.6%).

Tourism activities decrease by 1.1% in October

In October 2023, the index of tourism activities dropped by 1.1% from the immediately previous month, after an increase of 1.5% in September. As a result, the tourism segment was 5.6% above the level of February 2020 and 1.9% below the peak of the time series, reached in February 2014.

Seven of the 12 areas surveyed also recorded decrease as observed in national tourism activity (-1.1%). The most relevant negative contribution came from Rio de Janeiro (-9.0%), followed by Santa Catarina (-5.1%) and Bahia (-2.6%). On the contrary, São Paulo (1.9%), followed by Pernambuco (4.2%) and the Federal District (3.5%) were responsible for the main increases in regional terms.

In the October 2023/October 2022 comparison, the index of volume of tourism activities in Brazil expanded by 6.5%, the 30th consecutive positive rate, mainly driven by the increase in the revenue of enterprises that work in the sectors of car rental, air transportation of passengers, catering services, travel agencies; mass road transportation and hotels.

In regional terms, nine of the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance in tourism services, highlighted by São Paulo (6.8%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (11.6%) and Minas Gerais (14.1%). On the other hand, Ceará (-11.3%) and Espírito Santo (-6.1%) and Goiás (-0.7%) accounted for the main negative impacts this month.

As for the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased by 7.9% against the same period a year ago, mainly due to revenue increases in companies in the sectors of car rental, air transportation of passengers; hotels; catering services; travel agencies, mass road transportation and restaurants.

All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (6.9%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (11.7%), Minas Gerais (17.1%), Bahia (13.7%), and Paraná (12.7%). Ceará (-0.3%) was the only Federation Unit recording a negative result.

Transportation of passengers advances and transportation of cardo drops in October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil increased by 0.7% from the immediately previous month, thus recovering part of the loss of 1.1% observed in September. In this reference month, this segment is 0.6% below the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 23.5% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

Volume of cargo transportation recorded a decrease of 2.3% in October 2023, third decrease in a row, a period when there was a cumulative decrease of 4.7%. Therefore, this segment stood 4.7% below its peak in the time series (July 2023). In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 36.9% above that of February 2020.

Against the same month a year ago, without seasonal adjustment, passenger transportation increased by 1.4% in October 2023, after retreating 3.9% in September, whereas cargo transportation, in the same kind of comparison, increased by 4.9%, thus registering the 38th positive result in a row.

As for the cumulative index in 2023, transportation of passengers increased by 2.5% against the same period in 2022, whereas cargo transportation increased by 10.1% in the same period investigated.
