Volume of Services changes by -0.3% in September

In September 2023, volume of services in Brazil decreased by 0.3% from August, in the seasonally-adjusted series. As a result, the sector is 10.8% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 2.6% below the level in December 2022 (peak of the time series).

Against September 2022, in the non-adjusted series, volume of services dropped by 1.2%, after a sequence of 30 positive rates.

The cumulative index in the year hit 3.4% against the same period in 2022. The cumulative index in 12 months went from 5.3% to 4.4% in September.

The negative change of volume of services (-0.3%) from August to September 2023 was also observed in three of the five activities surveyed, mainly professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%) and information and communication (-0.7%). The former sector made up for the increase of 0.8% observed in August and the latter recorded its third drop in a row, with cumulative loss of 1.7% in July-September. As for transportation (-0.2%) there was slight decrease, after drops of 2.1%, in August.

On the other hand, services rendered to families (3.0%) and other services (0.8%) accounted for the only increases in the month, with the former activity recovering almost entirely from the retreat observed in August (-3.7%); and the latter recording increases after three negative results in a row, when there was a cumulative drop of 3.3%.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average decreased (-0.4%) in the quarter ended in September 2023 against the previous month. Among the sectors, four out of five activities retreated against the quarter ended August: other services (-0.7%), transportation (-0.6%), information and communication (-0.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.4%). Services rendered to families (0.1%) recorded the only positive change.

Against September 2022, volume of services, having decreased by 1.2%, interrupted a series of thirty positive rates in a row. This month’s result was marked by decreases in in three of the five dissemination activities and also recorded increases in only 47.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-2.2%) represented the main negative impact. Other services (-4.7%) and information and communication (-0.7%) also recorded decreases.

On the other hand, services rendered to families (2.5%) and professional, administrative and complementary services accounted for the only positive contributions to volume of services.

The change of the cumulative indicator in January - September 2023, against the same period in 2022, was 3.4%, with positive rates in four of the five activities and an increase of 56.0% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (3.4%). The other advances came from information and communication services (4.2%), professional, administrative and complementary services (3.9%), and services rendered to families (4.6%). In contrast, other services (-0.8%) exerted the only negative influence on the cumulative index in the year.

Services dropped in 17 of the 27 Federation Units in September

Most of (17) the 27 Federation Units recorded a drop in volume of services in September 2023 from the immediately previous month, following the retreat registered for Brazil (-0.3%). Among the areas with negative rates in the month, the main negative impact came from São Paulo (-1.2%), followed by Goiás (-4.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.6%) and the Federal District (-2.6%).

Rio de Janeiro (1.9%), followed by Ceará (1.9%) and Pernambuco (1.0%) accounted for positive contributions this month.

Against September 2022, drops in volume of services in Brazil (-1.2%) were registered in 10 of the 27 Federation Units. The main negative contribution came from São Paulo (-7.3%). On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (5.5%), Paraná (11.1%) and Mato Grosso (20.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (4.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (12.4%) and Ceará (5.3%) accounted for the main increases in the month.

As for the cumulative index against September 2023, against the same period in 2022, the advance of services in Brazil (3.4%) was observed in 25 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive impacts were those of Minas Gerais (8.4%), Paraná (11.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.2%), followed by Mato Grosso (18.1%), Santa Catarina (9.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (6.0%). The only negative contributions to the national index came from São Paulo (-0.9%) and Amapá (-3.8%).

Tourism activities recorded an increase of 1.5% in July

In September 2023,the index of tourism activities recorded an increase of 1.5% from the previous quarter, after a decrease of 1.4% in August. As a result, the segment of tourism is 6.1% above the level of February 2020 and 1.4% below the peak of the series, in February 2014.

In regional terms, only five of the 12 areas surveyed followed the increase registered in national tourism activity. Rio de Janeiro accounted for the most significant positive contribution (9.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (2.1%) and Santa Catarina (6.2%). With negative results, Ceará (-1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.6%) and the Federal District (-0.7%) recorded the main decreases in regional terms.

In the September 2023/September 2022 comparison, the volume of tourism ctivities in Brazil increased by 6.4%, its 30th positive rate in a row. Nine of the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured showed an increase in tourism activities, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (23.2%), Minas Gerais (17.1%), Bahia (17.1%) and Paraná (13.4%). In contrast, Pernambuco (-4.6%), Ceará (-6.9%) and the Federal District (-2.8%) were the main negative impacts this month.

Regarding the cumulative index up to September 2023the special aggregate of tourism activities rose by 7.9% from the same period in 2022. All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (6.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (11.8%), Minas Gerais (17.5%), Bahia (13.9%), and Paraná (12.9%).

Passenger and cargo transportation retreat in September

In September 2023 volume of passenger transportation in Brazil dropped by 1.1% from the immeditely previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, thus making up for the advance of 0.7% registered in August. In this reference month, this segment is 0.9% below the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 23.7% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

Volume of cargo transportation showed a decrease of 0.2% in September 2023, after a drop of 1.8% in August. Therefore, this segment stood 1.8% below its peak in the time series (July 2023). In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 43.5% above that of February 2020.

Against the same month a year ago, without seasonal adjustment, passenger transportation decreased by 3.9% in September 2023, after an increase of 0.2%% in August, whereas cargo transportation, in the same type of comparison, increased by 5.6%, thus registering its 37th positive result in a row.

As for the cumulative index in 2023, transportation of passengers increased by 2.5% against the same period in 2022, whereas cargo transportation increased by 10.1% in the same period investigated.
