IPCA was 0.24% in October

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) was 0.24% in October, the fourth consecutive month on the positive side. The monthly change had been 0.26% in September. In the year, the IPCA recorded an increase of 3.75% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.82%, below the rate of 5.19% registered in the immediately previous 12 months. The monthly change in October 2022 had been 0.59%.

The prices of eight out of nine groups of products and services surveyed rose in October. Transportation (0.35%) and Food and beverages (0.31%) contributed with 0.07 pp each to the overall index. The group of Communication (-0.19% and -0.01 pp) was the only one to drop. The other groups stood between the rate of 0.02% of Housing and the 0.46% of Household articles.

In the group of Food and beverages (0.31%), food at home rose 0.27% in October, after four drops in a row. The rises in potatoes (11.23%), onions (8.46%), fruits (3.06%), rice (2.99%) and meat (0.53%) stood out. On the dropping side, long-life milk (-5.48%) and hen eggs (-2.85%) stood out.
Food away from home (0.42%) accelerated in relation to the previous month (0.12%). The rises in meals (0.48%) and snacks (0.19%) were more intense than in September (0.13% and 0.09%, respectively).
In the group of Transportation (0.35%), the result was influenced by the increase in the prices of airfare (23.70%), sub-item accounting for the biggest individual contribution (0.14 p.p.) to the monthly index. Concerning fuels (-1.39%), only diesel fuel (0.33%) rose. Gasoline (-1.53%), vehicular gas (-1.23%) and ethanol (-0.96%) dropped.
Still in Transportation, the rise in taxi (1.42%) was due to the adjustments of 20.84% in Porto Alegre (14.34%), in force since October 9, and of 6.67% in São Paulo (0.61%), in force since October 28.
In the group of Housing (0.02%), the rise in water and sewage fees (0.37%) was influenced by the adjustments of 6.75% in Salvador (6.75%), in force since September 25 and not incorporated into the September´s IPCA, and of 14.43% in Fortaleza (0.90%), in force since October 29. In its turn, residential electricity (-0.58%) dropped, despite the adjustments in three places: Goiânia (5.28%), adjustment of 5.91% in force since October 22, Brasília (4.34%), adjustment of 9.65% in force since October 22, and São Paulo (-2.41%), adjustment of 6.79% in one of the concessionaires surveyed, in force since October 23.
Concerning the regional indexes, four areas registered negative changes in October. The lowest result was in São Luís (-0.23%), influenced by the drop of 3.94% in gasoline. The highest change was recorded by Goiânia (0.80%), influenced by the rise in residential electricity (5.28%).

INPC rises 0.12% in October
The rise of the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) was of 0.12% in October, close to that recorded in the previous month (0.11%). In the year, the INPC had a cumulative increase of 3.04% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.14%, below the rate of 4.51% observed in the 12 immediately previous months. The rate had been 0.47% in October 2022.
Food products changed 0.23% in October, whereas the September´s rate was 0.74%. Non-food products rose 0.09%, below the September´s result (0.38%).
The prices in seven areas dropped in October. The lowest results were in Porto Alegre, Recife and São Luís (-0.16% in the three areas), influenced by the drop in gasoline (-3.59%, -3.55% and -3.94%, respectively). The highest change was recorded in Goiânia (0.86%), due to a rise of 5.53% in residential electricity.

In order to estimate the indexes, the prices collected from September 29 to October 30, 2023 (reference) were compared with those in force from August 30 to September 28, 2023 (base). The INPC has been calculated by the IBGE since 1979. It refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 5 minimum wages, with a salaried head of the household. It encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.
