Volume of services retreats 0.9% in August

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services in Brazil fell 0.9% in August 2023 over July, after gaining 2.1% in the May-July period. The services sector was 11.6% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 1.9% below the figure in December 2022 (peak of the time series).

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services registered the 30th positive rate in a row (0.9%) over August 2022. The cumulative index in the year reached 4.1% compared with the same period of 2022.  The cumulative index in 12 months, which went from 6.0% in July to 5.3% in August 2023, decelerated and recorded the lowest result since August 2021 (5.1%).

The retraction in volume of services (-0.9%) between July and August 2023 was followed by four out of five activities investigated, highlighted by transportation (-2.1%), which registered negative figures in all its types: land (-0.9%), waterway (-1.3%), air (-0.3%), and storage, support services for transportation and mailing (-5.5%). The other retreats this month came from services rendered to families (-3.8%), information and communication (-0.8%) and  other services (-1.4%). On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (1.7%) recorded the only advance this month. 

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average decreased (-0.1%) in the quarter ended in August 2023 against the previous month. Among the sectors, four out of five activities retreated against the quarter ended in July: transportation (-0.7%), other services (-0.6%), services rendered to families (-0.3%) and information and communication (-0.2%), whereas professional, administrative and complementary services (0.8%) reported the only expansion.

Having advanced 0.9% in August 2023 over August 2022, volume of the services sector registered the 30th positive rate in a row. Despite the positive result this month, the expansion occurred in only two out of five dissemination activities and in 49.4% of the 166 types of services investigated.  Among the sectors, professional, administrative and complementary services (5.6%) exerted the major positive impact, followed by information and communication (2.4%). These sectors were leveraged by the activities of cleaning, car rental, engineering services, legal activities and billing and cadastral information, in the former sector, and of telecommunications, software licensing and development, data treatment, application services providers and Internet hosting services, distribution of movies, videos and TV programs, and custom development of computer programs, in the latter.

In contrast, other services (-6.2%) exerted the major negative influence on the total volume of services, pressed by support activities for financial services, management of stock exchange and organized over-the-counter markets, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, and activities of management of funds by contract or commission. The other retreats came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-1.2%) and services rendered to families (-1.5%).

As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period in 2022, the services sector expanded 4.1%, with positive rates in four out of five dissemination activities and an increase in 58.4% of the 166 types of services investigated.  Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (4.2%). The other advances came from information and communication services (4.8%), professional, administrative and complementary services (4.5%), and services rendered to families (4.7%). In contrast, other services (-0.4%) exerted the only negative influence on the cumulative index in the year.

Services retreat in 19 of 27 Federation Units in August

Most (19) of the 27 Federation Units recorded a retraction in volume of services in August 2023 compared with the immediately previous month, following the retreat registered for Brazil (-0.9%). Among the places with negative rates, the most important impact came from São Paulo (-1.2%), followed by Minas Gerais (-1.8%) and Bahia (-2.8%). In contrast, Mato Grosso do Sul (7.5%), Paraná (0.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) exerted the major positive contributions this month.

Compared with August 2022, the advance of volume of services in Brazil (0.9%) was followed by 23 out of 27 Federation Units.  The major positive contributions were in Paraná (9.8%), Mato Grosso (26.3%) and Minas Gerais (6.1%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (3.5%), Santa Catarina (7.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (5.0%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-4.6%) recorded the most relevant negative figure this month. 

As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the advance in volume of services in Brazil (4.1%) was widespread over the places surveyed, since 26 out of 27 Federation Units also recorded increases in real services revenue. The major positive impacts in regional terms occurred in Minas Gerais (9.0%), Paraná (11.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.1%), followed by Santa Catarina (10.3%), Mato Grosso (18.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (6.9%). On the other hand, Amapá (-2.8%) recorded the only negative influence on the national index.  

Tourism activities retreat 1.5% in August

The index of tourism activities retreated 1.5% in August 2023 over the immediately previous month, after rising 0.9% in July. As a result, the tourism segment was 4.3% above the level of February 2020 and 3.1% below the peak of the time series, reached in February 2014.

In regional terms, seven out of 12 places surveyed followed the retraction movement. The most relevant negative influence came from São Paulo (-4.4%), followed by Bahia (-6.1%), Pernambuco (-8.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.1%). Conversely, Paraná (2.6%), Goiás (1.8%) and Santa Catarina (1.1%) reported the major advances.

In the August 2023/August 2022 comparison, the index of volume of tourism activities in Brazil expanded 4.9%, the 29th consecutive positive rate, mainly leveraged by the increase in the revenue of enterprises that work in the sectors of car rental, air transportation of passengers, catering services, travel agencies, and mass road transportation.

In regional terms, only eight out of 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance, highlighted by Rio de Janeiro (11.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (10.7%), São Paulo (2.2%) and Bahia (13.0%). In contrast, Pernambuco (-3.3%), the Federal District (-2.5%) and Ceará (-2.0%) exerted the major negative impacts this month.

As for the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased 8.0% against the same period in 2022, leveraged by the increases in the sectors of car rental; restaurants; hotels; air transportation; travel agencies; catering services; and mass road transportation. Eleven out of 12 places investigated increased, highlighted by São Paulo (7.0%), Minas Gerais (17.6%), Rio de Janeiro (10.1%), Bahia (13.6%) and Paraná (11.0%). On the other hand, the Federal District (0.0%) recorded a null change.

Passenger transportation advances, cargo transportation registers a negative change in August

In August 2023, the volume of passenger transportation grew 0.7% over the immediately previous month in the seasonally-adjusted series, thus recovering part of the loss of 2.0% reported in the June-July period. The segment was 0.5% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 22.6% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

In turn, volume of cargo transportation retreated 1.2% in August 2023, after advancing 5.7% between May and July. Therefore, this segment stood 1.2% below its peak in the time series (July 2023). In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 41.4% above that of February 2020.

Against the same month a year ago, without seasonal adjustment, passenger transportation increased 0.2% in August 2023, after retreating 1.3% in July, whereas cargo transportation, in the same kind of comparison, increased 5.4%, thus registering the 36th positive result in a row.

As for the cumulative index in 2023, transportation of passengers increased 2.5% against the same period in 2022, whereas cargo transportation increased 10.1% in the same period investigated.
