IPCA stood at 0.26% in September

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of September was 0.26%, being 0.03 percentage points (pp) above the rate of August (0.23%). The cumulative index in the year increased by 3.50% and, in the last 12 months, it stood at 5.19%, above the rate of 4.61% registered in the 12 immediately previous months. The monthly change had been -0.29% in September 2022.

The prices of six of the nine products and services surveyed, rose in September. The main positive impact (0.29 p.p.) and the highest change (1.40%) came from Transportation,followed by Housing (0.47% and 0.07 p.p.). 

As for decreases, Food and beverages, dropped by the fourth consecutive month (-0.71% and -0.15 p.p.). The other groups stood between -0.58% of Household articles and 0.45% of Personal expenses

The decrease observed in Food and beverages (-0.71%) was mainly due to the fall of prices of food at home (-1.02%). A highlight were the decreases in potato (-10.41%),onion(-8.08%), chicken pieces (-4.96%), long life milk (-4.06%) and meat (-2.10%). Prices of rice (3.20%) and tomato (2.89%) rose. 

Food away from home (0.12%) decelerated in relation to the previous month (0.22%). Price rises of meals (0.13%) and of snacks (0.09%) were less ontense than in August (0.18% and 0.30%, respectively).

In the group Transportation (1.40%), the result was influenced by the prices of gasoline (2.80%), subitem accounting for the main individual contribution (0.14 p.p.) to the monthly index. The subitem fuels recorded an increase of 2.70%, followed by diesel (10.11%) and vehicle gas (0.66%), whereas the price of ethanol dropped by 0.62%. 

Also in Transportation, air faresrose by 13.47% in September, after a drop of 11.69% in August. The rise of intercity buses (0.42%) results from the price adjustment of 12.90% in Salvador (2.62%), in effect since August 10th.

The main contribution (0.04 p.p.) to the group Housing (0.47%), came from residential electricity(0.99%), due to price adjustments applied in three areas covered by the index. São Luís (10.74%), with adjustment of 10.43% in effect since August 28th; Belém (3.00%), with price adjustment of 9.40% since August 15th and Vitória (0.65%), with price adjustment of 3.20% since August 7th.

Also in Housing, the rise of water and sewage fares (0.02%) of 5.02% in Brasília (0.45%), since August 1st and of 1.37% in Vitória (0.13%), since August 1st. In turn, the drop in piped gas (-0.10%) results from drops in fees in two areas of coverage: Curitiba (-0.42%), with a decrease of 2.23% since August 04th and Rio de Janeiro (-0.14%), with an average drop of 1.70%, starting on August 1st.  

In Health and personal care (0.04%), the highlight was the rise in the item health insurance plans (0.71%), due to adjustments authorized by the National Agency for Supplementary Health (ANS) for the plans signed before Law no. 9,656/98, in force since July.Therefore, the IPCA of September included the monthly fractions of the old plans relative to the months of July, August, September and October.

As for regional indexes, the only decrease and lowest change occurred in Goiânia (-0.11%), due to residential electricity (-2.97%). The main changes were those of São Luís (0.50%), as a result of increases in residential electricity (10.74%) and rice (4.09%).

In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from August 30 to September 28, 2023 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from July 29 to August 29, 2023 (base). The IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980. It refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source and encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.

INPC of September stood at 0.11%  

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) rose by 0.11% in September, below the change registered in the previous month (0.20%). The cumulative INPC in the year is 2.91% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.51%, above the rate of 4.06% registered in the 12 immediately previous months. The rate was -0.32% in September 2022.

Food products (-0.74%) dropped again in September, after a decrease of 0.91% in August. The prices of non-food products (0.38%) rose less than in August (0.56%).

As for regional indexes, five areas recorded drops in September. The lowest change was recorded by Goiânia (-0.28%), due to a drop of 2.97% in residential electricity. Rio Branco recorded the main change (0.53%), as a result of the rise of gasoline (3.60%).
