In August, industry advances in nine of the 15 places surveyed

With the positive change of 0.4% in national industry in August, in the seasonally adjusted series, nine of the 15 places surveyed by the IBGE in this indicator showed positive rates. The biggest advances were in Amazonas (11.5%), Espírito Santo (5.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.3%). Paraná (3.5%), São Paulo (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), Goiás (1.0%), Mato Grosso (0.6%) and Santa Catarina (0.5 %) close the set of places with positive indices in August 2023. The sharpest falls were in Pará (-9.0%), Bahia (-4.1%) and Ceará (-3.8%), followed by Pernambuco (-1.7%), Northeast Region (-1.4%) and Minas Gerais (-0.7%).

The quarterly moving average of industry was of -0.1% in the quarter ended in August and nine of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates, highlights to Pará (-4.7%), Ceará (-3.2%), Bahia (-2.9%), Northeast Region (-2.5%) and Amazonas (-1.3%). Compared to August 2022, there were highs in 11 of the 18 places surveyed, with Rio Grande do Norte (49.8%) and Espírito Santo (26.3%) ahead.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, nine of the 15 places surveyed showed positive rates. Amazonas (11.5%), Espírito Santo (5.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.3%) recorded the sharpest advances, with the first place eliminating part of the loss of 13.7%, accumulated in the months of June and July; the second grew again after retreating 1.7 in the previous month; and the third one interrupted three consecutive months of output reduction, a period when it accumulated a decrease of 1.6%. Paraná (3.5%), São Paulo (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), Goiás (1.0%), Mato Grosso (0.6%) and Santa Catarina (0.5%) were the other places that posted positive indexes in August 2023.

Pará (-9.0%), Bahia (-4.1%) and Ceará (-3.8%) recorded the sharpest decreases, with the first place recording the third negative rate in a row (-13.9%) in this period; the second accumulating loss of 9.7% in two consecutive months of output reduction and the third one eliminating the advance of 0.4% seen in the previous month.  Pernambuco (-1.7%), Northeast Region (-1.4%) and Minas Gerais (-0.7%) recorded the other negative results of the month.

The quarterly moving average index of industry showed a change of -0.1% in the quarter ended in August 2023 compared to the level of the previous month, after registering -0.1% last June and July. Nine of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates this month. The sharpest drops were in Pará (-4.7%), Ceará (-3.2%), Bahia (-2.9%), Northeast Region (-2.5%) and Amazonas (-1.3%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (2.7%), Mato Grosso (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (1.3%) and Goiás (1.1%) showed the main advances.

In comparison with August 2022, national industry advanced 0.5% in August 2023, with highs in 11 of the 18 areas surveyed.  It is worth mentioning that August 2023 (23 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (23). This month, Rio Grande do Norte (49.8%) and Espírito Santo (26.3%) registered double-digit advances, the sharpest ones, driven mainly by the positive behavior observed in the coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, fuel oils and aviation kerosene), in the first location; and mining and quarrying industries (crude petroleum oils, pelletized or sintered iron ores and natural gas), in the second.

Mato Grosso (8.5%), Goiás (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (3.9%), Pernambuco (2.7%), Amazonas (2.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (0. 9%), São Paulo (0.9%) and Minas Gerais (0.7%) also showed sharper advances than the national average (0.5%), while Santa Catarina (0.2%) completed the set of places with an increase in this indicator.

On the other hand, Ceará (-13.1%) and Pará (-8.7%) recorded the most intense declines this month, pressured, to a large extent, by the activities of chemical products (herbicides for plants and insecticides for agricultural use), manufacture of apparel items and accessories (panties, shorts, dungarees, shorts, pants and the like, children's clothing and knitted accessories, bras, shirts, blouses and the like, long pants and dresses), food products (biscuits and cookies, margarine and dry pasta), leather, travel articles and footwear (leather sports shoes) and electrical machines, appliances and materials (transformers and kitchen stoves for household use), in the first location; and mining and quarrying industries (raw or processed iron ores), in the second.

Bahia (-7.6%), Northeast Region (-6.1%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.1%), Paraná (-0.9%) and Maranhão (-0.1%) registered the other negative figures this month.

Comparing the second period of four months with the second period of four months of 2023, against the same periods a year ago, 11 of the 18 places surveyed gained dynamism, following the national trend, which moved from -1.0% to 0.3%. Rio Grande do Norte (from 0.6% to 29.8%), Espírito Santo (from -2.4% to 16.9%), Mato Grosso (from -3.7% to 9.1%), Pernambuco (from -4.1% to 5.5%), Goiás (from -1.8% to 4.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -7.9% to -2.3%) and Pará ( from -0.4% to 4.2%) showed the biggest gains, while Maranhão (from 1.9% to -8.2%), Amazonas (from 11.2% to 1.3%), Ceará (from -3.4% to -10.3%) and Minas Gerais (from 6.4% to 2.7%) recorded the biggest losses.

In the cumulative index in the period from January to August, against the same period a year ago, the drop in the national output (-0.3%) reached nine out of 18 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Ceará (-7.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-5.0%). Northeast Region (-4.4%), Bahia (-4.1%), Maranhão (-3.5%), Santa Catarina (-3.1%), São Paulo (-1.7%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.2%) and Paraná (-1.2%) completed the group of places with drops.

The biggest highs were in Rio Grande do Norte (14.3%), Espírito Santo (6.8%) and Amazonas (6.0%). Minas Gerais (4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), Mato Grosso (3.4%), Pará (2.1%), Goiás (1.8%) and Pernambuco (0.6% ) showed the other positive results that month.

The cumulative index over the last 12 months changed -0.1% in August 2023, after registering a null change in the months of July, June and May. The most intense slowdowns were in Mato Grosso (from 6.3% to 4.9%), Northeast Region (from -4.9% to -6.0%), Ceará (from -6.5% to -7, 4%), Bahia (from -4.4% to –5.3%), Amazonas (from 5.7% to 4.9%) and Pernambuco (from -5.0% to -5.6%). Espírito Santo (from -4.2% to –1.0%) and Goiás (from 0.7% to 1.7%) showed the main gains.
