Retail sales increase by 0.7% in July

In July 2023, the volume of retail trade sales increased by 0.7% from June, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average was 0.1%: Against July 2022, there was an increase of 2.4%, second consecutive increase in this comparison. The cumulative index in the year up to July (against the same period a year ago) was 1.5%. The cumulative index in the last 12 months hit 1.6%.

As for extended retail trade, which encompasses vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales dropped by 0.3% from June, in the seasonally-adjusted series. The quarterly moving average for extended retail was 0.2%.
Against July 2022, extended retail increased by 6.6%. The cumulative index over the year was 4.3% and the cumulative index in 12 months, 2.3%.
In July, the country's retail trade is 2.2% below the record level of the series, reached in October 2020. The volume of sales of the retail trade activities showed a balance between negative and positive rates, from June to July 2023, in the seasonally adjusted series.
Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (11.7%), Other personal and household articles (8.4%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.3%) and Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, articles and toiletries (0.1%) had positive results. In Fabric, apparel and footwear (-2.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-2.6%), Furniture and household appliances (-0.9%) and Fuels and lubricants (-0.1%) there were negative changes.
In the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell by 6.2% and Construction material changed by 0.3%.

Compared to July 2022, increase in five of the eight activities
In relation to July 2022, there were increases in five of the eight activities: Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (6.9%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, articles and toiletries (6.5%), Furniture and household appliances (3.4%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.0%) and Fabric, apparel and footwear (1.6%).
The three sectors that recorded a decline were Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-7.3%), Other personal and household articles (-4.9%) and Fuels and lubricants (-2.8%).
In the extended retail trade, both the Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces sector, and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco registered expansion: 9.8% and 19.6% respectively. Construction material changed -0.3% in this comparison.

The activity of Office, computer and communication equipment and materials increased by 6.9% compared to July 2022, the first positive result after three months (-5.8% in April, -4.9% in May and -8 .8% in June). Year-to-date, the result up to July 2023 was 0.1%, offsetting the cumulative loss up to June (-1.1%). The indicator for the last twelve months recorded gains for the tenth consecutive month (1.4% until July 2023).
The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, articles and toiletries grew 6.5% compared to July 2022, reaching the fifth consecutive month to record an increase (February 2023 presented -0.5% compared to February 2022). The sector presented the second biggest increase in the interannual indicator. The cumulative result for the year, up to July, was 3.0% and in twelve months, 3.8%.
The Furniture and household appliances group recorded an increase of 3.4% in the volume of sales compared to July 2022, the third positive consecutive result (-3.7% in April, 0.4% in May and 2.7% in June ). In relation to the cumulative result in the year up to July, by going from 1.1% up to June to 1.4% in the reference month, the activity shows an intensification of the pace of gains. The cumulative result in the last twelve months was -0.3%, the smallest accrued loss in the series of negative changes that began in October 2021.
The Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco group grew 3.0% in sales compared to July 2022, against an increase of 3.2% in June 2023 compared to June 2022. In relation to the cumulative indicator of the year, in comparison with the same period of the previous year, the last five months indicate stability in the growth rate: 2.6% until March, 2.8% until April, 2.5% until May, 2.6% until June and 2 .7% until July. The cumulative indicator for the last 12 months recorded a gain of 2.6% until July.
The Fabric, apparel and footwear sector, in the interannual comparison, showed an increase of 1.6% in sales volume compared to July 2022, the first positive result since January 2023 (2.4%). In the year, the sector accumulated -9.6% until May, -9.0% until June and -7.5% until July. The cumulative result in the last twelve months (-9.6%) has been negative for eight consecutive months.
The Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery sector showed a 7.3% drop in the volume of sales compared to July 2022, the sixth consecutive year in 2023 among the seven recorded up to July (January was the only one to record an increase: 18.3%). During the year, the sector accumulated losses until July (-0.7%) in relation to the same period of the previous year, the first negative point after 18 months of cumulative gains. In twelve months, growth is 3.7%, the lowest level for this indicator since June 2022, when it registered 4.0%.
The activity of Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry stores, sporting goods, toy stores, etc., showed a 4.9% drop in sales compared to July 2022, the fifteenth consecutive in the year-on-year comparison (the last point to register an increase was April 2022). Until July, the sector had accumulated a drop of 12.5%, compared to the same period in 2022, the same rate of loss since April (-12.4% in April, -13.5% in May and -13.7% in June). In terms of cumulative results in the last twelve months, from -13.3% until June to -11.1% in July, the sector also showed losses.
The Fuels and lubricants group showed a 2.8% drop in sales compared to July 2022, the first month of decline after 17 months of positive results. In relation to the cumulative result in the year up to July, going from 14.3% up to June to 11.3% in the reference month, the activity shows a drop in the pace of sales. The cumulative result in the last twelve months went from 21.0% up to June to 18.8% in July, showing a decrease in growth intensity.
Including extended retail activities, the volume of sales of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces showed an increase of 9.8% in sales compared to July 2022, the third consecutive positive month (1.5% in May and 17.8% in June 2023). As a result, the cumulative result for the year was 6.0%, the seventh positive value for this indicator and the highest level since December 2021 (14.9%). In the last twelve months, the cumulative rate was 2.2%, the second consecutive increase.
The Construction material group recorded a change of -0.3% in sales compared to July 2022, the sixth consecutive year for this indicator (-5.7% in February, -5.0% in March, -7.7% in April, -2.0% in May and -2.4% in June). In relation to the cumulative figure for the year up to July, going from -3.6% up to June to -3.1% in the reference month, activity maintained a downward trend, the same trajectory as the 12-month cumulative figure: -7.0% until June and -5.8% until July.
In the case of Specialized wholesale in food, beverages and tobacco products, there was an increase of 19.9% compared to July 2022. In the year, the cumulative figure was 9.8%.
Sales grow in 14 Federation Units compared to June
In July, there were positive results in 14 of the 27 FUs, with highlights being: Espírito Santo (3.3%), Paraíba (2.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.1%). With a negative result, there are 11 FUs, with a highlight to Acre (-2.1%), Alagoas (-1.6%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.3%). Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Norte remained stable (0.0%).
In the extended retail trade, there were drops in 17 of the 27 FUs, with a highlight to: Pará (-6.7%), Tocantins (-4.8%) and Rondônia (-4.5%). With positive results, there are 10 UFs, with a highlight to Paraíba (4.9%), Espírito Santo (4.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%).
In the interannual comparison, sales rise in 21 of the 27 Federation Units
Compared to July 2022, retail sales increased in 21 of the 27 FUs, with highlights being: Tocantins (14.6%), Ceará (12.3%) and Maranhão (11.0%). The most intense falls were in Rondônia (-1.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-1.1%) and Mato Grosso (-0.6%).
In the extended retail trade, there was growth in 24 FUs, with a highlight to: Bahia (28.6%), Maranhão (26.5%) and Ceará (24.5%). Only Mato Grosso do Sul (-12.2%), Roraima (-2.2%) and Goiás (-1.8%) obtained negative results.
