Cattle and chicken slaughter up, hogs and pigs down in Q2 2023

In the second quarter of 2023, chicken slaughter rose 4.7%, that of cattle increased 12.6% and that of hogs and pigs dropped 1.0% against the same period of 2022. Compared with the first quarter of 2023, chicken slaughter fell 3.2%, that of cattle grew 13.4% and that of hogs and pigs retreated 0.6%.
Acquisition of raw milk reached 5.72 billion liters, with an increase of 4.0% over the second quarter of 2022 and a retreat of 3.9% against the immediately previous quarter.
On the other hand, the acquisition of raw hides by tanning houses rose 9.5% over the second quarter of 2022 and 8.5% against the first quarter of 2023, adding up to 8.38 million raw hide pieces.
1.05 billion dozens of hen eggs were produced in the second quarter this year, a rise of 2.9% in the annual comparison and of 2.0% in relation to the first quarter of 2023.

Cattle slaughter rises 12.6% in relation to Q2 2022
In the second quarter of 2023, 8.36 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. This amount was 12.6% bigger than that obtained in the second quarter of 2022 and 13.4% above that registered in the immediately previous quarter.
May was the month with the greatest activity in the quarter, when 298.87 thousand head were slaughtered, a positive change of 14.7% in relation to the same month a year ago.
The slaughter of females increased 23.9% in relation to the second period of 2022 and registered a record for the category of heifers, whereas the slaughter of males rose 5.1% in the same comparison.
The slaughter of more 934.45 thousand cattle head in the second quarter of 2023 over the same period of 2022 was leveraged by the increase in 18 out of 27 Federation Units.
The mostly significant increases occurred in: Mato Grosso (+310.74 thousand head), Rondônia (+243.27 thousand head), Goiás (+187.91 thousand head), Tocantins (+43.36 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+42.69 thousand head), Bahia (+38.25 thousand head), Pará (+37.19 thousand head) and Rio Grande do Sul (+37.15 thousand head). On the other hand, the most significant negative changes occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul (-42.69 thousand head), Paraná (-9.69 thousand head), Santa Catarina (-4.59 thousand head) and São Paulo (-1.16 thousand head).
Mato Grosso remained the leader in cattle slaughter, accounting for 17.0% of the national share, followed by Goiás (10.9%) and São Paulo (10.6%).
Hogs and pigs slaughter drops and interrupts rise started in 2014
14.08 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in the second quarter of 2023, representing drops of 1.0% in relation to the same period in 2022 and of 0.6% in the comparison with the first quarter of 2023. Such result interrupted a sequence of positive annual comparisons coming since the second quarter of 2014.
The slaughter of less 148.23 thousand head of hogs and pigs in the second quarter of 2023 over the same period in 2022 was influenced by drops in 17 out of 24 Federation Units.
The drops were in: Rio Grande do Sul (-108.59 thousand head), Minas Gerais (-85.43 thousand head), São Paulo (-60.87 thousand head), Mato Grosso (-53.36 thousand head) and Goiás (-53.30 thousand head). In contrast, the biggest rises were in: Santa Catarina (+133.33 thousand head), Paraná (+81.78 thousand head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+15.20 thousand head).
In the ranking of FUs, Santa Catarina remained leading the slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 29.7% of the national participation, followed by Paraná (21.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (16.5%).
Chicken slaughter has best second quarter in the time series started in 1997
In the second quarter of 2023, 1.56 billion chicken head were slaughtered, accounting for an increase of 4.7% against the same period in 2022 and a drop of 3.2% in the comparison with the first quarter of 2023. Such result pointed out the best second quarter in the time series of the survey, started in 1997, with the highest records ever computed in the months of May and June.
The slaughter of more 70.03 million chicken head, in relation to the second quarter of 2022, was determined by increases in the slaughter in 17 out of 25 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. The rises were in: Paraná (+29.01 million head), Goiás (+15.29 million head), São Paulo (+11.71 million head), Santa Catarina (+6.29 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (+3.88 million head), Minas Gerais (+3.72 million head) and Mato Grosso (+2.15 million head). Conversely, there were drops in: Mato Grosso do Sul (-2.01 million head) and Bahia (-1.47 million head).
Paraná remained leading the slaughter of chicken in Brazil, with 34.2% of the national share, followed by Santa Catarina (13.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.9%).
Milk acquisition grows 4.0% in annual comparison
In the second quarter of 2023, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was of 5.72 billion liters, representing an increase of 4.0% in relation to the second quarter of 2022 and a drop of 3.9% against the immediately previous quarter.
Comparing the second quarter of 2023 with the same period in 2022, the increase of 217.77 million liters of milk acquired at national level was due to the rises reported in 22 out of 26 FUs participating in the Quarterly Survey of Milk. The most significant positive changes occurred in: Santa Catarina (+79.23 million liters), Goiás (+35.97 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (+32.16 million liters), Sergipe (+26.56 million liters), Paraná (+23.45 million liters), Ceará (+18.02 million liters) and Rio de Janeiro (+14.59 million liters). On the other hand, the most relevant decreases occurred in Minas Gerais (-42.62 million liters) and São Paulo (-30.01 million liters).
Minas Gerais still led the ranking of milk acquisition, with 23.0% of the national acquisition, followed by Paraná (14.3%), Santa Catarina (13.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.6%).
Acquisition of cattle leather increased 9.5% in relation to Q2 2022
The tanning houses investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported to have received 8.38 million whole cattle raw hides in the second quarter of 2023. This figure represented increases of 9.5% over the same quarter in 2022 and of 8.5% against the first quarter of 2023.
The comparison between the second quarters of 2022 and 2023 pointed out a positive change of 728.68 thousand pieces in the total purchased by the establishments. Twelve out of 17 Federation Units investigated reported increases. The most significant positive changes occurred in Rondônia (+216.10 thousand pieces), Goiás (+182.00 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+162.52 thousand pieces), Pará (+90.32 thousand pieces), São Paulo (+82.35 thousand pieces) and Paraná (+41.69 thousand pieces). Conversely, the most significant negative changes were recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (-86.63 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-18.74 thousand pieces).
Mato Grosso remained leading the ranking of Federation Units that receive rawhide pieces to be processed, with 16.2% of the national share, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (12.8%) and Goiás (12.3%).
Production of hen eggs hits record of 1.05 billion dozens
The production of hen eggs reached 1,05 billion dozens in the second quarter of 2023. That volume was 2.9% higher than the one recorded in the same quarter of 2022 and 2.0% higher than the immediately previous quarter. The output was the second biggest ever recorded and it hit a record for a second quarter, taking into account the time series of the survey, started in 1987.
The production of more 29.03 million dozens eggs, at national level, over the second quarter of 2022 was leveraged by the increases in 20 out of 26 FUs with eligible chicken farms. The biggest rises were in Paraná (+5.87 million dozens), Rio Grande do Sul (+4.76 million dozens), Ceará (+4.42 million dozens), São Paulo (+3.40 million dozens), Mato Grosso (+2.73 million dozens) and Goiás (+2.45 million dozens). The most significant reduction was in Espírito Santo (-2.28 million dozens).
The state of São Paulo was still the biggest egg producer in the second quarter of 2023, with 26.5% of the national production, followed by Paraná (10.1%), Minas Gerais (8.9%) and Espírito Santo (8.0%).
