Quarterly Livestock Survey - first results: Cattle and chicken slaughter grows in Q2 2023

The first results of animal production in the 2nd quarter of 2023 indicate that, compared to the same period of 2022, cattle slaughter grew by 11.0%, chicken slaughter increased by 4.7% and the slaughter of pigs and hogs fell by 1.6%. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2023, cattle slaughter increased by 12.3%, chicken slaughter fell by 2.8% and the slaughter of pigs and hogs decreased by 1.1%.
Regarding milk production, 5.72 billion liters of milk were purchased, 3.9% more than in the 2nd quarter of 2022 and 2.8% less than in the previous quarter. The acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries grew 8.6% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 and 7.2% compared to the previous quarter, adding up to 8.31 million whole pieces of rawhide. In terms of hen eggs, 1.04 billion dozen were produced in the 2nd quarter of this year, up 2.1% in the year and up 1.8% in the quarter.

Cattle slaughter increases 11.0% in the year and 12.3% in the quarter
In the 2nd quarter of 2023, 8.25 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some type of health inspection. This amount represented an increase of 11.0% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 and an increase of 12.3% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023.
The production of 2.14 million tonnes of beef carcasses in the 2nd quarter of 2023 consisted of increases of 9.5% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and 12.6% in relation to the 1st quarter of 2023.
Chicken slaughter grows 4.7% in the annual comparison and drops 2.8% compared to the previous quarter
In the 2nd quarter of 2023, 1.56 billion chicken heads were slaughtered. This result meant an increase of 4.7% in relation to the equivalent quarter of the previous year and a decrease of 2.8% in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2023.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.35 million tonnes in the 2nd quarter of 2023. This total meant an increase of 7.2% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 and a reduction of 2.2% compared to the previous quarter.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs has drops of 1.6% in the year and 1.1% in the quarter
The slaughter of hogs and pigs totaled 14.00 million head in the 2nd quarter of 2023, down 1.6% compared to the same quarter of 2022 and 1.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023.
The cumulative weight of carcasses registered 1.31 million tonnes in the 2nd quarter of 2023, a decrease of 0.3% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 and an increase of 2.0% compared to the previous quarter.
Acquisition of milk rises 3.9% in the annual comparison and falls 2.8% compared to the previous quarter
The purchase of raw milk made by establishments that operate under some type of health inspection (federal, state or municipal), in the 2nd quarter of 2023, was 5.72 billion liters. The value corresponded to an increase of 3.9% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 2.8% compared to that obtained in the previous quarter.
Leather acquisition rises 8.6% in the year and 7.2% in the quarter
The tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Leather Survey – those tanning at least 5,000 whole units of bovine rawhide per year – declared that they received 8.31 million whole pieces of bovine rawhide in the 2nd quarter of 2023. an increase of 8.6% compared to that recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2022 and an increase of 7.2% compared to the previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs grows 2.1% in the year and 1.8% in the quarterly comparison
The production of hen eggs was 1.04 billion dozens in the 2nd quarter of 2023. The result represented increases of 2.1% compared to the same period of the previous year and 1.8% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023 .
