In June, industry grows in six of the 15 places surveyed

In June 2023, the national industrial production increased by 0.1% compared to May, in the seasonally adjusted series, and six of the 15 areas surveyed had positive rates. The biggest rises were in Espírito Santo (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (3.2%) and Santa Catarina (2.6%). The most intense falls were in Ceará (-6.4%), Northeast Region (-4.5%), Amazonas (-4.0%) and Paraná (-3.3%).
Compared to June 2022, the change of 0.3% in June was followed by nine of the 18 areas surveyed. The biggest increases were in Rio Grande do Norte (16.5%), Espírito Santo (11.8%), Rio de Janeiro (11.7%) and Mato Grosso (10.5%).

Six of the 15 areas surveyed showed positive rates in June, in the seasonally adjusted series, accompanying the positive change (0.1%) of the national industry. The biggest rises were in Espírito Santo (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (3.2%) and Santa Catarina (2.6%), with the first advancing 7.1% in three consecutive months of production growth; the second, interrupting two consecutive months of decline, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 3.1%; and the third eliminating the 1.7% decline seen last May. Mato Grosso (2.2%), Goiás (1.8%) and Bahia (0.5%) also showed advances above the national average (0.1%).
The most intense falls were in Ceará (-6.4%), in the Northeast Region (-4.5%), in Amazonas (-4.0%) and in Paraná (-3.3%), after registering growth in the previous month (1.4%, 1.4%, 12.6% and 5.3%, respectively). Other negative indices occurred in São Paulo (-2.7%), Minas Gerais (-1.1%), Pará (-1.0%), Pernambuco (-1.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0 .5%).
The quarterly moving average index of industry was -0.1% in the quarter ended in June compared to the level of the previous month, interrupting the sequence of positive results registered in May (0.3%), April (0.1% ) and last March (0.2%). Six of the 15 areas surveyed had negative rates, with a highlight to the sharpest declines registered by Amazonas (-3.1%), Ceará (-2.8%), Northeast Region (-1.9%) and Minas Gerais (- 1.0%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (2.8%), Espírito Santo (2.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%) showed the main advances in June 2023.
Compared to June 2022, industrial production increased by 0.3% in June 2023, with positive rates in nine of the 18 areas surveyed. June 2023 (21 days) had the same number of working days as the same month of the previous year (21).
The highest increase was in Rio Grande do Norte (16.5%), largely due to activities involving coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel). Espírito Santo (11.8%), Rio de Janeiro (11.7%) and Mato Grosso (10.5%) also showed high positive double-digit rates, while Pará (6.7%), Amazonas (6. 6%), Goiás (4.7%), Minas Gerais (4.4%) and Pernambuco (3.9%) completed the set of places with an increase in production in the monthly index of June 2023.
On the other hand, Ceará (-14.6%) and Maranhão (-8.5%) recorded the sharpest declines in that month, pressured by the behavior of leather, travel goods and footwear, chemical products and apparel and accessories, in the former and basic metals in the latter.
The Northeast Region (-7.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.8%), Bahia (-3.6%), São Paulo (-2.4%), Santa Catarina (-1.2%) , Mato Grosso do Sul (-0.7%) and Paraná (-0.2%) showed the other negative results in that month.
In the cumulative result for the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the reduction in national production (-0.3%) reached eight of the 18 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Ceará (-6.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (- 6.0%) and Northeast Region (-4.5%). There were also decreases in Santa Catarina (-3.8%), Bahia (-3.7%), Maranhão (-2.0%), São Paulo (-1.9%) and Pernambuco (-1.1%). Goiás had zero change (0.0%) and repeated the level of the same period of the previous year.
The biggest advances were in Amazonas (9.8%), in Minas Gerais (5.9%) and in Pará (5.5%), with Rio de Janeiro (4.3%), Rio Grande do Norte (3. 8%), Mato Grosso (1.2%), Mato Grosso do Sul (1.1%), Paraná (0.6%) and Espírito Santo (0.5%) coming next.
Comparing the first quarter of 2023 with April-June 2023, both comparisons against the same periods of 2022, there were increases in 11 of the 18 areas surveyed. The biggest increases were in Mato Grosso (from -7.8% to 9.6%), Pará (from -2.2% to 13.2%), Rio Grande do Norte (from -2.7% to 11. 8%), Espírito Santo (from -2.8% to 3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -9.1% to -3.0%), Pernambuco (from -3.3% to 1. 1%), Goiás (from -1.7% to 1.3%) and Bahia (from -5.1% to -2.2%).
The sharpest falls were in Maranhão (from 8.7% to -11.5%), Amazonas (from 14.8% to 5.1%), Ceará (from -1.9% to -10.2%), Minas Gerais (from 8.1% to 4.0%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (from 3.1% to -0.2%).
The cumulative index in the last 12 months (0.1%) had a slight gain in pace compared to the results of May (0.0%) and April (-0.2%) of 2023. Five of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in June 2023 and six showed greater dynamism compared to the indices of last May. There were hikes in Rio de Janeiro (from 3.7% to 5.1%), Amazonas (from 7.1% to 8.3%), Minas Gerais (from 2.3% to 3.4%), Espírito Santo (from -9.4% to -8.3%), Goiás (from -1.7% to -0.7%) and Pará (from -2.5% to -1.8%).
The falls occurred in Ceará (from -5.3% to -6.8%), Northeast Region (from -3.6% to -4.8%), Bahia (from -3.1% to -4.2 %), Mato Grosso (from 8.8% to 7.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from -1.7% to -2.5%).
