Industrial production changes by 0.1% in June

In June 2023, the national output of industry changed by 0.1% from may in the seasonally-adjusted series. Against June 2022, in the non-adjusted series, there was a change of 0.3%, second consecutive positive rate, but lower than that of last May (1.9%).

In the year, industry has a negative cumulative rate (-0.3%) against the same period in 2022, whereas the cumulative index in 12 months reached 0.1%.
SOnly one of the four broad economic categories and 7 of the 25 industrial segments recorded increase in production. Among the activitirs, the main contribution came from mining and quarrying industry, with an increase of 2.9% in the month.
Other positive contributions came from manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (4.9%), rubber products and plasct material (1.2%) and metal products (1.2%).
On the other hand, among the 16 activities recording decrease, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-3.6%), motor vechiles, trailers and bodies (-4.0%) and machinery and equipment (-4.5%) accounted for the main impacts in June 2023. The first aforementioned sector interrupted a series of four months of increase, a period marked by an increase of 14.4%. The last two activities made up for part of the advances in the previous month: 7.2% and 12.6%.
Also worthy of mention are the drops recorded by the subsectors of pharmaceuticals (-4.9%), leather, traveling goods and footwear (-6.8%), other transportation equipment (-5.5%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (-2.8%) and food products (-0.2%).

Among the broad economic categories, against the previous montg, semi and non-durable consumer goods (0.9%) recordded the only positive change in June 2023 and made up for part of the drop of 1.1% registered in the previous month.
Producers of durable consumer goods (-4.6%), on the contrary, recorded the main decrease in the month, after an increase of 9.4% last May. The segments of capital goods (-1.2%) and intermediate goods (-0.3%) also recorded negative results in June 2023; the former dropped again after having increased 4.1% in the previous month, and the second recorded the first negative result since last January (-0.8%).
Quarterly moving average changes by -0.1%% in quarter ended June
Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall recorded a negative change of 0.1% in the quater ended June 2023, against the previous month. That interuupted the sequence of positive results registered last May (-0.3%), April (0.1%) and March (0.2%).
Among the major economic categories, also against the marginal movement, capital goods (-3.3%) recorded the most relevant negative rate in June 2023, after a null change (0.0%) in May and a drop of 1.5% in Abril. Producers of semi and no-durable consumer goods (-0.3%) also dropped in June, after an increase of 2.1% last May, when it interrupted the downward trend initiated in January 2023.
The sector of semi and non-durable goods (0.2%), on the other hand, accounted for the only positive result in June 2023, having increased again after a drop of 0.3% in the previous month. By showing a null change (0.0%), the sector producing intermediate goods interrupted three consecutive months of had a cumulative increase of 1.4%.
From June 2022, industrial production increased by 0.3%
Against the same month a year ago, the industrial sector grew by 0.3%, in June 2023 with positive figures in two of the four broad economic categories, 8 out of the 25 sectors, 34 out of the 80 groups and 41.7% of the 789 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that June 2023 (21 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (21).
Among the activities, the major influences on the overall industry came from mining and quarrying industry (11.0%), food products (4.9%) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (4.3%). Also relevant are the positive contributions of printing and reproduction of recorded meeting (23.7%) and other transportation equipment (10.1%).
On the other hand, also against June 2022, among the 17 recording drops, chemicals (-9.4%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-6.2%), electrical machinery and apparatus (-13.0%), machinery and equipment (-7.3%) and computer equipment, electronic and optica products (-12.6%) accounted for the main infleunces on the average of industry.
Other negative important impacts were recorded by pharmaceuticals (-6.5%), non-metallic mineral products (-5.7%), leather, traveling goods and footwear (-10.5%) and wood products (-12.3%).
Intermediate goods was the category recording the biggest increase from June 2022
Among the major economic categories, also agains the same monoth a year ago, intermediate goods (1.8%) recorded, in June 2023, the biggest increase among the broad economic categories. The segment of semi and non-durable goods (0.1%) also recorded a positive result in the month, although lower than that of industry (0.3%). Durable consumer goods (-3.9%) and capital goods (-10.3%) dropped.
The sector of intermediate goods increased by 1.8% in June 2023 from the same period in 2022, second consecutive positive rate in this comparison, but less than against the previous month (3.1%). The production of semi and non-durable goods recorded a positive change of 0.1% in the monthly index of June 2023, second consecutive positive change in this type of comparison, lessbut less intense than in the previous month (0.9%).
The segment of durable consumer goods dropped 3.9% in June 2023, and interrupted, this way, five consecutive months of increase in this type of comparison, whereas producers of capital goods recorded a decrease of 10.3% against the same month a year ago, 10th negative rate in this type of comparison.
Second quarter of 2023 closes with a change of -0.1%
On quarterly bases, the sector of industry, having recorded a negative change of 0.1% in the period April-June 2023, kept the negative performance observed in the first quarter of the year (-0.4%), but with reduced intensity between the two periods, both comparisons against the same period a year ago.
Among the broad economic categories, following the movement observed for the industry overall, only intermediate goods recorded an increase in pace from the first three months of 2023 (-1.9%) to the second quarter of the year (0.8%). Loss of dynamism characterized the other segments betweeen the two periods: durable consumer goods (from 9,.% to 2.7%), capital goods (from -6.8% to -12.4%) and semi and no-durable goods (from 3.5% to 0.3%).
Cumulative index up to June reached -0.3%
The cumulative index for January-June 2023 against the same period a year ago, was -0.3%, with negative figures in two of the four major economic categories, 16 of the 25 sectors, 48 of the 80 groups and 54.6% of the 789 products surveyed.
Among the activities, the main negative influences on the industry overall came from chemicals (-8.1%), electrical machinery and apparatus (-11.6%), non-metallic mineral products (-8.5%), machinery and equipment (-5.8%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (-9.9%) and wood products (-17.6%).
It is also worth highlighting the negative contributions recorded by manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (-8.8%), basic metals (-3.0%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-2.3%) and fabricated metal products (-3.5%) and miscellaneous manufacturing (-6.2%).
Also against June 2022, among the nine activities recording increase of output, mining and quarrying industry (.,8%), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (4.3%), food products (2.5%) and pharmaceuticals (11.1%) accounted for the main contributions to the average of industry. Other important positive impacts were registered by other transportation equipment (15.9%) and rubber and plastic products (1.7%).
Among the major economic categories, the cumulative index in 2023 recorded reduced dynamism in capital goods (-9.7%). Intermediate goods (-0.5%) also dropped recuou, being below the average of industry (-0.3%). On the other hand, durable consumer goods (5.7%) recorded the main increase in the first six months of 2023. The sector of semi and non-durable consumer goods (1.8%) also increased in the year.
