IPCA stands at -0.08% in June

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) was -0.08% in June, standing 0.31 percentage points (p.p.) below the May rate (0.23%). That was the lowest change for June since 2017, when the index was -0.23%. In the year, the IPCA accumulates an increase of 2.87% and, in the last 12 months, of 3.16%, below the 3.94% recorded in the previous 12 months. The monthly change in June 2022 was 0.67%.

The result of June was mainly influenced by the drops in Food and beverages (-0.66%) and Transportation (-0.41%), que accounted for -0.14 p.p. and -0.08 p.p, respectively of the monthly result. Household articles (-0.42%) and Communication (-0.14%) also recorded a decrease in prices in June’s IPCA. As for increases, the main impact (0.10 p.p.) and the biggest change (0.69%) in the index came from Housing. The other groups stood between the rate of 0.06% in Education and 0.36% in Personal expenses

The decrease observed in Food and beverages (-0.66%) was mainly due to the fall of prices of food at home (-1.07%), which had been stable in May. The drops in soybean oil (-8.96%), fruits (-3.38%), long-life milk (-2.68%) and meats (-2.10%) stand out. As for increases, potato (6.43%) and garlic (4.39%) rose.

Food away from home (0.46%) decelerated from the previous month (0.58%), as a result of lower increases in snacks (0.68%) and meals (0.35%). In May, the changes in these subitems had been of 0.71% and 0.47%, respectively.

As for Transportation (-0.41% and -0.08 p.p.), the result was influenced by the the fall of prices of new cars (-2.76%) and used cars (-0.93%). In addition, the result of fuels (-1.85%) stood out, due to the drops in diesel (-6.68%), ethanol (-5.11%), vehicular gas (-2.77%) and gasoline (-1.14%). As for increases, airfares rose 10.96%, after a decrease of 17.73% in May.

The main contribution (0.06 p.p) to the group Housing (0.69%), came from residential electricity (1.43%), due to price adjustments applied in four areas covered by the index. Belo Horizonte (13.66%), with price change of 14.69%, since May 28th; Recife (3.73%), with a change of 8.33%, since May 14th; Curitiba (1.64%), with 10.66% starting on June 24th; and Porto Alegre (-0.26%), with a change of 2.92% starting on June 19th, in one of the concessionnaires surveyed.

Water and sewage rates  (1.69%) also recorded increases, due to the rise of prices in four metropolitan areas covered by the index: Belém (7.76%), with a change of 8.33%, starting on May 28th;  Curitiba (4.60%), with a change of 8.20%, starting on May 17th; São Paulo (3.19%), with a change of 9.56%, since May 10th, and Aracaju (0.30%), with a change of 4.92%, since May 1st.

Also in Housing, the drop in prices of piped gas (-0.04%) was due to the reduction of 3.05% in the fare in Curitiba (–0.20) and of 0.59% in Rio de Janeiro (-0.04%), both of them since May 1st. The price of gas cylinder (-3.82%) also fell.

The result of the group Health and personal care (0.11%) reflected the increase in the prices of health insurance plan (0.38%), as a result of the adjustment of 9.63% authorized by the National Regulatory Agency for Private Health Insurance and Plans (ANS), in effect from May 2023 to April 2024. Therefore, June’s IPCA encompassed the monthly fractions of May and June.

Five areas recorded increases in June. The main change was recorded by Belo Horizonte (0.31%), due to residential electricity (13.66%). The lowest change was that of Goiânia (-0.97%), mainly due to drops in gasoline (-5,40%) and residential electricity (-4.83%).

In order to estimate the month's index, the prices collected from May 30th to June 28th, 2023 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from April 29th to May 29th, 2023 (base). The IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980. It refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source and encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.

INPC was at -0.10% in June

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) stood at -0.10% in June, below the rate in the previous month (0.36%). In the year, the INPC had a cumulative increase of 2.69% and, in the last 12 months, of 3.00%, below the rate of 3.74% observed in the 12 previous months. In June 2022, the rate had been 0.62%.

Food products increased 0.66% in June, after an increase of 0.16% in May. Non-food products recorded an increase of 0.08%, with deceleration from May (0.43%).

Twelve areas dropped in June. Goiânia (-0.86%) recorded the lowest result, with fall of prices of gasoline (-5.40%) and residential electricity (-4.79%). The biggest change, in turn, was that of Recife (0.38%), driven by rises in . gasolina (4.09%) and residential electricity (3.73%).
