Grain storage capacity increases by 1.8% and reaches 192.2 million tonnes in the second semester of 2022

In the 2nd semester of 2022, available storage capacity in Brazil reached 192.2 million tonnes, 1.8% more than in the preceding semester. The number of establishments rose 0.7% in relation to the first one in 2022.

Rio Grande do Sul has the biggest number of storage establishments (2,178), and Mato Grosso, the highest capacity: 47.5 million tonnes.

The stock of farm products amounted to 39.4 million tonnes, an increase of 7.4% from the second quarter of 2021.

In this second semester of 2022, the North, Central West and South recorded decreases of 9.2%, 1.5$ and 0.1%, respectively, in the number of establishments, whereas the Southeast and Northeast recorded decreases of 0.8% and 0.4%. As for the five main farm products in storage units, the stocks of corn made up the biggest volume (18.1 million tonnes), followed by soybeans (8.1 million), wheat (7.4 million), rice and coffee (2.2 million) and coffee (0.9 million). These products account for 94.0% of the total amount monitored by this survey.

Silo capacity reached 99.2 million tonnes, with an increase of 3.2%

In terms of useful capacity, silo stood out in the country, having reached 99.2 million tonnes in the second semester of 2022, or 51.6% of the total useful capacity. Against the first semester of 2022, the capacity of silos increased 3.2%.

Then came bulk warehouses, which reached 70.3 million tonnes of useful capacity, 0.4% more than observed in the previous period. This category is responsible for 36.6% of the national storage.  

Conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses amounted to 22.6 million tonnes, which represented an increase of 0.1% from the first semester of 2022. These warehouses make up 11.8% of the total storage capacity.  

Silos were predominant in the South Region, being responsible for 63.9% of the storage capacity of this major Region and for 47.9% of the overall silo capacity in the country. The bulk type is more commonly seen in the Central West, with 52.1% of the capacity in the region and 57.6% of the overall capacity. Conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses prevail in the South (34.5%) and Southeast (30.3%). These two Major Regions together account for 64.8% of the overall capacity of conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses in the country.

Number of establishments increased in the North, South and Central West  

With 8,435 active establishments in the second semester of 2022, the Survey of Stocks recorded an increase of 0.7% in the number of active establishments, compared to the survey in the first semester of 2022. In the second semester of 2022, there were increases in the number of establishments in the North Region (9.2%), Central West (1.5%) and South (0.1%) and decreases in the Southeast (-0.8%) and Northeast (-0.4%).

Rio Grande do Sul has the biggest number of storage establishments (2.178), followed by Mato Grosso, with 1,422 and Paraná, which has 1,353 units. Mato Grosso has the biggest storge capacity in the country, with 47.5 million tonnes. A total of 58.3% are of the bulk type and 35.3% are silos. Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná have 35.2 and 33.2 million tonnes of capacity, respectively, with silos as the predominant type of Warehouse in these states.

Stocks of corn, soybean and wheat increased, whereas rice and coffee record decrease  

The stock of agricultural products amounted to 39.4 million tonnes, an increase of 7.4% against the 36.7 million tonnes in the second semester of 2021.

In the second semester of 2022, there was an increase in the stocks of corn (7.3%), soybean (5.8%) and wheat (15,6%) and decreases in rice (-6.8%) and coffee (-21.5%).

These products represent 94.0% of the total stored among the products monitored by this survey, being the remaining 6.0% formed by cotton, black beans, beans of different colors, other grain and seeds.
