In November 2022, volume of services in Brazil was stable (0.0%) from the preceding month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, after a decrease of 0.5% in October. As a result, the sector of services is 10.7% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 0.5% below the rate of September 2022 (peak of the time series).

In the unadjusted series, against November 2021, volume of services advanced 6.3%, twentieth consecutive positive rate. As for the cumulative index in the year, volume of services advanced 8.5% from the same period a year ago, and the cumulative index in 12 months dropped from 9.0% in October to 8.7% in November 2022, lowest result since October 2021 (8.1%).

A null change (0.0%) in volume of services from October to November 2022 led to negative rates in three of the five activities surveyed, mainly information and communication (-0.7%), which lost part of the cumulative gain in the period July-October (5.1%). Other services (-2.2%) and services rendered to families (-0.8%), with loss of a significant part of the advance registered in October (2.8%) and the last one recording the second consecutive negative result (-2,1%) also dropped.
On the other hand, transportation (0.3%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) accounted for the main positive contributions in the month: the former interrupted a sequence of two drops, marked by a cumulative loss of 2.0%; and the second having shown slight increase (0.2%), after a drop of 0.9% in October.
The quarterly moving average was stable (0.0%) in the quarter ended November 2022 in comparison with the previous month, thus interrupting a sequence of positive rates between April and October. Among the sectors, there was a predominance of negative rates with drops in three of the five activities against the immediately previous quarter: other services (-1.0%); transportation (-0.6%) and services rendered to families (-0.4%). On the otehr hand, information and communication increased this month whereas professioanl, administrative and complementary services remained stable (0.0%).
Against November 2020, volume of services increased 6.3%, twentieth consecutive positive rate. The month’s result was marked by increases in all the five activities and in 59.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, that of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (10.4%) accounted for the main positive contribution, due, to a great extent, to the increased revenue of enterprises in the segments of road transportation of cargo, port and terminal management, pipeline transportation; railway transportation of cargo; maritime and port support, storage; and air transportation of passengers.
The other advances came from prosessional, administrative and complementary services (7.2%); information and communication (3.1%); services rendered to families (7.8%) and other services (0.6%), which recorded increases in revenue in: car rental; consulting in business management; charging and cadastral information activities; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions;, in the first one; portals, content providers and and Internet hosting services; consulting in information technology; other telecommunications activities ; and broadcast TV activities, in the second; catering services; restaurants; physical conditioning activities; and theater and performances, in the third one; and support activities to forestry production, management of household,river or industrial sewage and collection of non-dangerous residue, in the last one.
Considering the cumulative index in the year, the services sector increased by 8.5%, with positive rates in five activities and in 64.5% of the 166 types of services surveyed. Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (13.9%). The other advances came from services rendered to families (25.8%); professional, administrative and complementary services (7.7%); and information and communication (3.7%). The only negative cumullative contribution in the year was that of Other services (-3.3%).
Services grew in 19 of 27 Federation Units in November
Drops in volume of services in November 2022, against the previous month, were recorded by 19 of the 27 Federation Units, although the result of Brazil remained was stable (0.0%).
São Paulo (-0.5%) accounted for the most relevant negative impact, followed by Mato Grosso (-7.9%), Federal District (-4.0%), Amazonas (-6.7%) and Minas Gerais (-1.0%). On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (2.2%) was responsible for the main positive contribution, followed by Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, with an increase of 1.7%.
Against November 2020, the advance of services in Brazil (6.3%) was registered in 24 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (7.6%), followed by Minas Gerais (10.0%), Rio de Janeiro (5.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (10.1%), Mato Grosso do Sul (16.0%) and Paraná (3.6%). Federal District (-9.7%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-6.2%) and Rio Grande do Norte (-1.6%) recorded the only negative results in the month.
In terms of the cumulative index in the year (8.5%), 26 of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases. São Paulo accounted for the main positive impact (10.3%), followed by Minas Gerais (11.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.7%), Rio de janeiro (3.2%), Pernambuco (11.7%), Paraná (4.4%) and Mato Grosso (13.2%). On the other hand, the only negative influence was that of the Federal District (-2.3%).
Tourism activities changed by -0.1% in November
In November 2022, the index of tourism activity fell by 0.1% from October, second negative result in a row, in a period with a cumulative loss of 2.7%. As a result, the segment is 2.5% below the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 9.6% below the highest figure in the series, of February 2014.
Six of the 12 areas surveyed recorded decrease. The most relevant negative contribution came from São Paulo (-7.9%), followed by Bahia (-2.4%) and Santa Catarina (-2.9%). Rio Grande do Sul (7.4%), São Paulo (0.7%) e Paraná (5.3%) recorded the main increases.
In the comparison November 2022/November 2021, the volume of torurism activities in Brazil increased 11.8%, twentieth consecutive positive rate, probably due to the increase of revenue of companies in the segments of car rental; air transport; catering services; restaurants; and road collective transportation of passengers.
Ten of the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered increases, with São Paulo (16.2%) as a highlight, followed by Minas Gerais (26.4%), Paraná (15.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (15.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.4%). Pernambuco (-4.5%) and Goiás recorded the only negative results.
As for the cumulative indicator in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased 32.0% mainly due to the increases in revenue of companies in the segments of air transportation of passengers; restaurants; hotels; car rental; collective road transportation of passengers and catering services. All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (39.1%), followed Minas Gerais (51.9%), Rio de Janeiro (16.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (40.1%) and Bahia (26.0%).
Transportation of passengers (2.2%) and of cargo (0.5%) increased
In November 2022, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil increased 5.5% from the immediately previous month in the seasonally-adjusted series, after a decrease of 5.1% in October. The segment is 2.5% below the level of February 2020, prior to the pandemic, and 24.2% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).
Volume of cargo transportation recorded an increase of 0.5% in November 2022, thus recovering part of the loss of 3.2%, observed in the period September-October. This segment is now 2.7% below the peak of the series, in August 2022. In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 29.4% above that of February 2020.
Against November 2021, transportation of passengers recorded the 20th positive rate in a row, having advanced 10.5% in November 2022, whereas cargo transportation, in the same comparison, increased 15.4%, its 27th consecutive positive increase.
As for the cumulative index in the first semester of 2022, transportation of passengers recorded an increase of 31.3% against the same period in 2021, whereas cargo transportation advanced 15.2%.
