Quarterly Livestock Surveys: slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs and chickens grows in the 3rd quarter of 2022

In the 3rd quarter of 2022, the slaughter of cattle increased by 11.9%, that of hogs and pigs grew by 5.0% and that of chickens increased by 0.9% compared to the same period of 2021. In comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2022, the slaughter of cattle had an increase of 6.3%, that of hogs and pigs grew 2.4% and that of chickens rose 3.1%.
Concerning hogs and pigs, the best slaughter results were recorded for the months of July, August and September (14.45 million head), reaching the highest quarterly level in the time series, which began in 1997.
The acquisition of milk was 6.10 billion liters, down 1.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021 and up 11.1% compared to the previous quarter.
The acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries rose 6.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021, increasing 6.6% compared to the previous quarter, adding up to 7.99 million whole pieces of rawhide.
1.02 billion dozens of hen eggs were produced in the 3rd quarter of this year, surpassing by 857 thousand dozens the previous record of the survey, from the 3rd quarter of 2020. The mark was 0.5% higher than that of the same quarter of 2021 and represents growth of 1.2% in relation to the previous quarter.

Cattle slaughter rises 11.9% in the year and grows 6.3% over the previous quarter
In the 3rd quarter of 2022, 7.85 million cattle head were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service. There was an increase of 11.9% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021 and an increase of 6.3% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022.
The production of 2.13 million metric tons of bovine carcasses in the 3rd quarter of 2022 represents an increase of 11.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, and an increase of 9.6% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022 .
Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 5.0% in the annual comparison and 2.4% in the quarter
The slaughter of hogs and pigs totaled 14.45 million head in the 3rd quarter of 2022, the best slaughter results for the months of July, August and September, providing the highest quarterly level of the time series since the survey was started, in 1997. This represents an increase of 5.0% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 2.4% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2022. The record exports registered in the period (288.55 thousand metric tons) contributed to the production flow.
The cumulative weight of carcasses registered 1.33 million metric tons in the 3rd quarter of 2022, which consisted of an increase of 4.3% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021 and an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous quarter.
Chicken slaughter rises 0.9% in the annual comparison and 3.1% in the quarterly one
In the 3rd quarter of 2022, 1.55 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This result meant an increase of 0.9% in relation to the equivalent quarter of the previous year and an increase of 3.1% in comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2022.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.75 million metric tons in the 3rd quarter of 2022. This total meant an increase of 2.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021 and also an increase of 2.7% compared to the previous quarter.
Milk acquisition drops 1.7% in the year, but rises 11.1% in the quarter
The purchase of raw milk made by establishments that operate under some type of sanitary inspection in the 3rd quarter of 2022 was 6.10 billion liters. The value corresponded to a reduction of 1.7% compared to the volume registered in the 3rd quarter of 2021 and an increase of 11.1% compared to that obtained in the previous quarter.
Leather purchases increased by 6.7% in the year and 6.6% in the quarter
The tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather – those tanning at least 5,000 whole units of bovine rawhide per year – declared that they received 7.99 million whole pieces of bovine rawhide in the 3rd quarter of 2022. This amount represents an increase of 6.7% compared to that recorded in the 3rd quarter of 2021 and an increase of 6.6% compared to the previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs hits record, rises 0.5% in the year and 1.2% in the quarter
The production of hen eggs reached a new record in the 3rd quarter of 2022, reaching 1.02 billion dozen eggs. This mark exceeds by 857 thousand dozen the previous record of the survey, of the 3rd quarter of 2020, and was 0.5% greater than the production of the same quarter of 2021, and represents a growth of 1.2% in relation to the previous quarter. This was the fifth time that the quarterly production of hen eggs in Brazil surpassed 1 billion dozen since the beginning of the time series of the survey, in 1987.
