Volume of services grows 0.7% in August

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services in Brazil expanded 0.7% in August 2022 over July. As a result, the sector was 10.1% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 0.9% below the peak of the time series (November 2014).

In the non-adjusted series, volume of services grew 8.0% over August 2021, the 18th positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in the year hit 8.4% and the cumulative rate in the last 12 months changed from 9.6% in July to 8.9%.

The advance of 0.7% in volume of services between July and August 2022 was followed by three out of five activities surveyed, highlighted by other services (6.7%), which recovered from the drop of 5.0% in the previous month, and information and communication (0.6%), which advanced 1.8% in the last two months. The other expansion this months was in services rendered to families (1.0%), the sixth consecutive growth, a period in which it accumulated 10.7%. On the other hand, transportation (-0.2%) exerted the only negative influence in August. Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.0%) remained stable.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average was 1.0% in the quarter ended in August 2022 against the previous month, maintaining the positive behavior since August 2020. Four out of five activities followed the growth of the overall index: transportation (1.0%), services rendered to families (0.7%),  other services (0.7%) and information and communication (0.4%). Professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.1%) slightly decreased this month.

In the comparison with August 2021, volume of the services sector, having increased 8.0% in August 2022, recorded the 18th positive rate in a row.  The month’s result was marked by increases in four of five activities and in 63.9% of the 166 types of services investigated.  Among the sectors, that of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (13.6%) accounted for the major positive contribution, leveraged by the increase in the revenue of the enterprises of road transportation of cargo, mass road transportation, air transportation of passengers, rail transportation of cargo, port and terminal management, inland transportation of cargo and maritime and port support navigation.

The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (7.3%), services rendered to families (22.0%) and information and communication (2.9%).

The only negative rate this month was in  other services (-2.4%), pressed by the reduced revenue in the activities of fund management agreement or commission, recovery of plastic material, post-harvesting activities and consulting in financial investments.

As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the services sector expanded 8.4%, with positive rates in four out of five dissemination activities and an increase in 66.9% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (13.8%). The other advances came from services rendered to families (32.2%); professional, administrative and complementary services (7.7%); and information and communication (2.8%). The only negative rate came from other services (-5.0%).

Services advance in 16 out of 27 federation Units in August

Eighteen out of 27 Federation Units rose against the immediately previous month.   The most important positive impacts came from São Paulo (1.6%), followed by the Federal District (5.0%), Minas Gerais (1.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.5%). The major negative influences came from Paraná (-7.1%), Goiás (-3.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.1%).

In comparison with August 2021, the increase in volume of services in Brazil (8.0%) was followed in 24 out of 27 Federation Units.  The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (10.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (12.5%), Rio de Janeiro (4.8%), Pernambuco (13.8%) and Santa Catarina (7.2%). Conversely, Paraná (-6.0%) registered the most important negative figure this month, followed by the Federal District (-0.6%).

In the cumulative index in the year over the same period a year ago, 25 out of 27 Federation Units advanced in volume of services. The major positive contributions came from São Paulo (10.2%), Minas Gerais (10.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.7%), Rio de Janeiro (2.6%), Pernambuco (12.7%), Bahia (8.6%) and Ceará (14.5%).  The Federal District (-1.6%) and Rondônia (-0.4%) registered the only negative contributions to the overall index.

Tourism activities grow 1.2% in August

In August 2022, the index of tourism activities expanded 1.2% against the immediately previous month, the second positive rate in a row, a period with a cumulative gain of 2.7%. As a result, the tourism segment was 0.1% above the level of February 2020.

Only three out of 12 areas surveyed followed the growth movement observed in the national tourism activity (1.2%).  The most relevant positive contributions came from Minas Gerais (3.9%), São Paulo (0.6%) and Pernambuco (0.8%). In contrast, Rio Grande do Sul (-6.0%) and Santa Catarina (-6.0%) registered the major retreats.

In the August 2022/August 2021 comparison, volume of tourism activities in Brazil increased 22.8%, the 17th positive rate in a row, mainly due to the increase in the revenue in the sectors of restaurants; hotels; car rental; air transportation; catering services; and mass road transportation.

All the 12 Federation Units where the indicator is surveyed recorded increases in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (32.8%), Minas Gerais (40.8%), Rio de Janeiro (10.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (25.6%) and Paraná (25.0%).

As for the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased 39% against the same period in 2021, mainly due to the increases in the revenue in the sectors of air transportation of passengers; restaurants; hotels; car rental; mass road transportation and catering services.  In regional terms, all the 12 places surveyed registered positive rates, highlighted by São Paulo (45.7%), Minas Gerais (62.9%), Rio de Janeiro (20.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (51.8%) and Bahia (34.6%).

Passenger and cargo transportation retreat in August

After advancing 4.1% last July, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil decreased 0.5% in August 2022 over the immediately previous month in the seasonally-adjusted series. In this reference month, this segment was 0.1% below the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 22.3% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

In its turn, volume of cargo transportation negatively changed 0.3% in August 2022. This segment was 0.3% below the peak of the time series, reached in the previous month. Cargo transportation was 31.3% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020).

Compared with August 2021, without seasonal adjustment, passenger transportation recorded the 17th positive rate in a row, having advanced 19.2% in August 2022, whereas cargo transportation, in the same kind of comparison, increased 18.7%, the 24th consecutive positive result.

In the cumulative index in the first eight months of the year, passenger transportation recorded an increase of 37.6% against the same period in 2021,whereas cargo transportation advanced 14.1% in the same interval investigated.
