In July, retail sales drop 0.8%

In July 2022, the volume of sales of national retail trade dropped 0.8%, against June, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average decreased by 0.9%. The cumulative index in the year is 0.4%, and in the last 12 month, -1.8%.

In extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales decreased by 0.7% from June. The quarterly moving average decreased 0.9% in the quarter ended July.

Volume of sales against July 2021 fell by 6.8%. The cumulative index in the year reached -0.8% and that in 12 months, -1.9%.

Seven of the eight activities recorded negative rates, in the seasonally adjusted series

In July, in the seasonally-adjusted series, there were negative rates in seven of the eight activities surveyed: Fabric, apparel and footwear (–17.1%), Furniture and household appliances (-3.0%), Books, newspapers and stationery (-2.0%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-1.5%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (-1.4%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.6%) and Other personal and domestic articles (-0.5%). The activity Fuels and lubricants (12.2%) was the only one to record increase.

Regarding extended retail trade, both sectors recorded decrease: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (-2.7%) and Construction material (-2.0%).

 Drop from July 2021 reached 5.2%, with a decrease in five of the eight activities

In comparison with July 2021, retail trade recorded a decrease of 5.2%, with negative rates in five of the eight activities. Other personal and domestic articles (-28.7%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-16.2%), Furniture and household appliances (-14.6%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.4%) and hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.1%).

Three activities recorded increases, in this comparison: Fuels and lubricants (17.4%); Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (11.2%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (4.0%).

In extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease from July 2021 (-8.5% and -13.7%, respectively).

Other personal and household objects, sector which encompasses department stores, glasses’ shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc, recorded a decrease of 28.7% from July 2021, third consecutive one and the main contribution to the rate (-4.5 p.p in -5.2%).  Up to July there was cumulative decrease of 7.5% against the same period in 2021, with a bigger pace of decrease since May (-2.8% in June and -0.9% in May).  The cumulative index in the last 12 months changed from –0.8% up to June to -6.2% in July.  

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear, in the interannual compariosn, fell by 16.2% from July 2021, first negative result since December 2021 (-1.0%). The activity accounted for the main third contribution to this indicator, with a contribution of -1.3 p.p. in a total of -5.2%. The cumulative index in the year was 11.0%, and in the last 12 months, 4.8%.  

The group Furniture and household appliances recorded a decrease of 14.6% against July 2021, fourth consecutive result and second main influence on the interannual indicator for trade (-1.4 p.p. in a total of -5.2%). The cumualtive index in the year, with a change from -9.3% up to June to -10.1% in July, adds to acceleration of decrease. The cumulative index in the last 12 months  (-15.3%) is close to the figure recorded in June (-15.0%).  

The activity  Office, computer and communication material and equipment  changed by -0.4% against July 2021, first negative results after two months of increase in volume of sales.  As for the cumulative index in the year, there have been similar results in the last few months: 0.5% up to May, 0.7% up to June and  0.6% up to July 2022, in comparison with the same period a year ago.  In the last 12 months, the figure of -3.8% up to July represents the fourth consecutive negative result.   

The group Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco changed by -0.1% in sales from July 2021, versus an increase of 2.2% in June 2022 from June 2021. In the cumulative index in the year, the last four months indicate stability in the pace of increase: 0.4% up to April, 0.2% up to May, 0.5% up to June and 0.4% up to July.  The cumulativr index in 12 months is at -0.9% up to July.  

The secotr Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery increased 11.2% against July third consecutive and sixth in 2022 among the seven results observed up to July (April was abril foi the only one to record a decrease: -0.9%). In the year, the second has recorded a cumulative increase of 17.4% in relation to the same period a year ago.  In 12 months, the increase was of 7.2%, highest figure for this indicator, since March 2022, when it was 9.7%.  

The activity Pharmaceutica2ls, medical, orthopedic and toiletries recorded an increase of 4.0% in volume of sales against July 021, with the ninth consecutive increase (October  2021 registered -0.2% against October 2020). The sector accounted for the second main positive contribution to the monthly interannual indicator (0.4 p.p. out of -5.2%). In the year, there was an increase of 7.5% above the figure in the same period in 2021 and, in 12 months, the result was positive (6.1%).    

The group Fuels and lubricants  increased 17.4% against July 2021, fifth consecutive month with a positive result.  July was also affected by the fall of fuel prices – it is worth of mention that in IPCA, the item Fuels recorded a decrease of 14.15% from June to July 2022. 

As a result, the sector accounted for the main  positive contribution in the month: 1.6 p. p. of a total of -5.2% for the interannual indicator.  The cumulative index in the year, with a chenage from 5.1% up to June to 7.0% in the month of reference, the activity shows an acceleration of sales. The same was observed in the cumulative year in the last 12 months, with a change from 0.9% up to June to 1.9% in July, with an acceleration of increase.   

The volume of sales of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell by 8.5% in comaprsion with sales in July, second consecutive decrease (after -7.1% in June 2021). As a result, the cumulative index in the year amounted to -1.0%, first negative figure since February 2021 (-10.0%). In the last 12 months, the cumulative index reached 0.8%, lowest figure since April 2021 (-3.7%).   

The group Construction material dropped 13.7% from July 2021, fourth consecutive decrease (-9.9% in April, -7.7% in May and -12.0% in June). The cumulative index in the year, having changed from -7.4% up to June to -8.3% in the month of reference, the activity intensified the pace of decrease, same path of the cumulative index in 12 months: -7.7% up to June and -8.5% up to July. 

Sales recorded a decrease of 20 Federation  Units against June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, 20 of the 27 Federation Units recorded negative results, mainly: Bahia (-3.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.1%) and Maranhão (-2.8%). On the other hand, with positive results were seven of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Mato Grosso (3.5%), Paraná (1.7%%) and Amapá (1.5%). 

In this same comparison, consideting extended retail trade, there were negative results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly Sergipe (-5.7%), Rondônia (-5.3%) and Tocantins (-4.2%). On the other hand, the positive rates were those of Espírito Santo (0.8%), Paraíba (0.7%) and Amapá (0.1%). 

Against July 2021, the change of retail trade sales totaled -5.2% with negative results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly:  Rondônia (-24.1%), Tocantins (-1.4%) and Acre (-11.3%). On the other hand, seven Federation Units recorded positive results, mainly Roraima (10.1%), Alagoas (5.8%) and Ceará (2.5%).  

As for extended retail trade, the change against July 2021 amounted to -6.8%, with negative results in 26 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly: Pernambuco (-14.0%), Bahia (-13.9%) and Rondônia (-12.9%). Roraima was the only country to record an increase (1.5%).
