* Seasonally-Adjusted Series

Considering the negative change of 0.4% in the national industrial activity in June in the seasonally-adjusted series, ten out of 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates.  Mato Grosso (-2.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.4%) and Espírito Santo (-2.3%) had the sharpest reductions, with the first place eliminating part of the 4.9% expansion observed in May; the second accumulating a loss of 6.5% in two consecutive months of falling production; and the third retreating again after having advanced in May (3.1%), when it interrupted three consecutive months of negative rates, which accumulated a reduction of 7.4%.

Amazonas (-1.6%), Ceará (-1.4%), Northeast Region (-0.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.5%) also registered more intense declines than the national average ( -0.4%), while Goiás (-0.4%), Paraná (-0.3%) and Minas Gerais (-0.1%) completed the set of locations with negative indices in June 2022.

On the other hand, Pará (9.8%) had the highest increase this month and offset part of the 13.3% drop seen in May. Bahia (2.4%), Pernambuco (1.0%), São Paulo (0.8%) and Santa Catarina (0.2%) had the other positive rates.

The quarterly moving average index of industry showed no change (0.0%) in the quarter ended in June 2022 compared to the level of the previous month, after registering positive rates last May (0.4%) and April (0.5 %). Eight of the fifteen areas surveyed had positive rates, with a highlight to Bahia (2.0%), Santa Catarina (1.9%), Amazonas (1.6%) and Goiás (1.0%). On the other hand, Pará (-1.2%) registered the major loss in June 2022.

Compared with the same month in 2021, the national industry fell by 0.5% in June 2022,  with 5 out of the 15 areas surveyed reporting negative rates. It is worth mentioning that June 2022 (21 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (21). Rio de Janeiro (-4.0%), Minas Gerais (-3.8%) and Pará (-3.6%) had the most intense reductions, pressured, mainly, by the negative behavior observed in the sectors of mining and quarrying and basic metals, in Rio de Janeiro; of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies and pulp, paper and paper products, in Minas Gerais; and mining and quarrying, in Pará. Amazonas (-3.2%) and Espírito Santo (-2.2%) completed the set of places with negative rates in this month.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (18.8%) and Bahia (11.9%) showed double-digit advances and the most intense ones in June 2022, driven, to a great extent, by the positive behavior from the activities of food products and coke, petroleum products and biofuels, in Mato Grosso; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels, in Bahia. Paraná (7.3%), Goiás (3.5%), Rio de Grande do Sul (3.0%), Northeast Region (2.9%), Pernambuco (1.7%), Santa Catarina (0, 6%), São Paulo (0.3%) and Ceará (0.2%) showed the other positive results in the month.

In the cumulative index of the year, compared to the same period in 2021, the reduction in national production reached eight of the fifteen places surveyed, especially Pará (-10.4%), Santa Catarina (-5.4%) and Ceará (-5 .1%), pressured by the declines in the mining and quarrying industries and basic metal sectors, in Pará; textiles, electrical machinery, equipment and materials, machinery and equipment and rubber and plastic products, in Santa Catarina; and manufacturing of wearing apparel and accessories, food products and  electrical machinery and apparatus, in Ceará. Pernambuco (-4.3%) and São Paulo (-2.7%) and Minas Gerais (-2.5%) registered sharper negative rates than the national average (-2.2%), whereas Espírito Santo (-1.2%) and Paraná (-1.0%) were the other places that recorded a retreat in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (22.6%) recorded the highest advance in the cumulative index of January-June 2022, leveraged by the positive behavior coming from the sectors of food products and coke, petroleum products and biofuels. Bahia (9.4%), Rio de Janeiro (3.6%), Goiás (1,6%), Amazonas (1,2%), Rio de Grande do Sul (0,4%) and Northeast Region (0,3%) registered the other positive rates.

Having retreated 2.8% in June 2022, the cumulative indicator in 12 months maintained the downward trend started in August 2021 (7.2%). In regional terms, eleven out of 15 places surveyed registered negative rates in June and nine registered lower dynamism against the indexes of May. Minas Gerais (from 2.1% to 0.0%), Amazonas (from -1.8% to -3.7%), Espírito Santo (from 1.3% to -0.6%), Ceará (from -6.5% to -8.2%), Rio de Janeiro (from 5.4% to 3.9%), Santa Catarina (from -2.3% to -3.8%) and São Paulo (from -2.9% to -3.9%) showed the main losses between May and June 2022, while Mato Grosso (from 10.7% to 13.0%) and Bahia (from -3.9% to -2 .7%) marked the biggest gains.
